The GM Authority Take
GM Mexico sales suffered a significant double-digit decline in February – the twelfth consecutive month that the company’s sales have declined in the Mexican market. In fact, the last time that the automaker registered an increase in sales in Mexico was during February 2020. Since then, sales have been in the red due to unstable demand for vehicles caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Once again, the primary reason for the decline in GM Mexico sales in February was the drastic loss of volume in the entry-level Chevrolet Aveo and Beat, which have been highly popular in the Latin country for the last few years. Both models have a long-standing history in the Mexican market and now have fewer versions available as GM overhauls its portfolio with the new Chevrolet Onix and Chevrolet Tracker.
Despite the overall negative result, a total of 11 GM vehicles managed to increase sales volumes in February. These include large increases in GM’s SUVs, pickups and full-size vans, which registered substantial double or triple digit growth, both during the month and during the first two months of the year. The only exception was the GMC Sierra, which is in the red for both February and year-to-date.
Also worth mentioning is the solid initial performance of the all-new 2021 Buick Envision, which recently launched in Mexico. The uptick in Envision sales enabled Buick to finish the month with an uptick in year-over-year sales volume.
