GM customers eager to purchase a new 2024 Chevy Colorado or 2024 GMC Canyon will need to wait a little longer, as both midsize pickups are still under a stop-sale order.
As GM Authority reported previously, General Motors issued a stop-sale order for the 2024 Chevy Colorado and 2024 GMC Canyon earlier in the week due to a software issue. Although a fix for the issue has been identified and new units are now shipping to dealers, the stop-sale order for both pickups is still in effect.
“We expect this hold to lift shortly so we can begin delivering vehicles to customers as quickly as we can,” GM spokesperson Kevin Kelly told GM Authority.
It’s estimated that the stop-sale order could affect as many as 15,000 units. Although production of the 2024 Chevy Colorado and 2024 GMC Canyon began last month, shipments have only begun this week. Just last week, GM Authority asked what was happening with 2024 Colorado shipments and 2024 GMC Canyon shipments, and according to GM Authority sources, the newly produced trucks were held for “quality” in the same way that new units of the 2023 Chevy Colorado and 2023 GMC Canyon were held following the initial launch of the third-gen nameplates.
GM Authority sources also indicate that newly produced units were placed in storage while awaiting the latest software fix. After receiving the software update, new units received a thorough cleaning and validation process prior to shipping to dealers. Sources indicate that the stop-sale order did not affect production at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri.
Last year, some 2023 Chevy Colorado and 2023 GMC Canyon owners reported a loss of battery charge following an over-the-air software update. To rectify the issue, GM released a Service Update that included new programming for the vehicles’ ECM and Serial Data Gateway Module.

Comes standard with a cracked block, dented roof, and a dead battery? Did I miss anything?
OTA updates that brick the infotainment system.
Yes you did, transmission shudder!
Not relevant to the 2023+ redesign. At least get your model years right when trying to dump on a vehicle.
Well, I was really referring to all of the issues they had with the A8 shudder in general. The 2023+ was not a complete redesign either. There were just some improvements with transmission “hard Parts” instead of just sugar coating it with fluid flushes and changes and software updates. And the improved 2023+ transmission isn’t trouble free either according to this article!

I was referring to the shudder issue in general. The 2023+ transmission was not a complete redesign either. They only made some improvements to some of the transmission “hard parts” And, I’m hearing there are some issues with those too.
I guess I bought a different one, because mine has none of that and has been flawless for 21k miles.
Yep you missed TSB 23-na-208. M 23 Canyon needs new axles at 3709 miles. Been waiting 2 months on parts and no ETA! Sucks!
Update.. trying to get GM to buy it back! Axles replaced and still a whine in rear end at 45 to 55 mph. I’m hoping they do! Done with GM!
Just like the Ranger and Taco will have their foibles that corporate will say nothing about till they get into customer’s hands.
I have a sneaking suspicion that automakers [and probably most corporations] are purposely limiting production to keep inventory low and prices high. Happens all the time here in CA with the refineries….unexpected “maintenance” at several key plants happens like clockwork every time gas prices creep down to a reasonable level. I have a feeling GM and Ford are doing this now. And they’ll keep doing it as long as people are willing to keep spending money they don’t have on things they don’t need.
Definitely. Each and every company learned during the pandemic that they could artificially inflate prices as long as the consumer kept buying, irrespective of whether they actually had supply issues or not.
Corporates are going to try and hold that objective for as long as possible. However, it’s a short-term strategy that really leaves the door open to competitors willing to flood the market with supply and/or compete heavily on price to win market share — and those companies will have potential buyers for life as long as the quality is decent enough.
Then 10 years from now, when GM’s leadership is holding their D or P in their hands wondering what went wrong and why their market share is so low, maybe someone smart enough in the room will be able to point back to how they sacrificed long-term company welfare for short-term profits.
Maybe the smart person will even have the bonus job of turning off the lights on the way out.
Motor Trend named the Colorado the truck of the year. I bet they would like a do over with that and the SUV of the year Blazer EV that also has a stop sale order.
Stop Sale lifted last night. No other issues moving forward, order away!
My Colorado was built 12-23 and by that time GM knew of problems with the 2023 Colorado, so weather cooperated for me to wash and wax and roof more considerably just using a sponge. If you want to find defects, waxing your vehicle makes them easy to find. Found three spots in paint, black seals on roof seem loose, and seal on drivers door is loose and eventually will be a problem. Will bring these things to dealer attention.
I have 2017 Chevy Silverado with transmission problems, it only has 33,300 miles on it. I heard there was a class action lawsuit. I need information about a recall if applicable
Mary has to go. This parade of horribles (ev debacles, production problems) has happened on her watch.
I ordered a 2024 Canyon Denali on December 4th and still 3 months later have no idea when it will be shipped, it was built in January. Absolutely ridiculous and to top it off I had a 1250 dollar coupon that came after I ordered my truck and has since expired and they won’t do anything because the truck has to be at the dealer to get it. I’ve always like GM but this will probably be my last if it ever shows up. Pitiful display of customer service.
