Just What Is Going On With 2024 GMC Canyon Shipments?

The third-gen GMC Canyon pickup got its big debut for the 2023 model year, with the subsequent 2024 GMC Canyon introducing a few updates and changes, including the addition of the Canyon AT4X AEV Edition. Production of the 2024 GMC Canyon got underway early in January after multiple delays, as GM Authority covered previously. That said, dealers have yet to receive any new units of the the 2024 GMC Canyon, which leads us to ask – just what is going on with 2024 GMC Canyon shipments?

Badging on the GMC Canyon. New units of the 2024 GMC Canyon have yet to hit dealers.

For those readers who may have missed it, a similar situation is brewing for the 2024 Chevy Colorado, with no new 2024 Colorado units shipping out either, despite production for both the 2024 Chevy Colorado and 2024 GMC Canyon beginning on January 2nd, 2024.

Per previous coverage, both models were originally  slated to begin production on October 30th, 2023. However, that date was pushed back due to complications arising from the 2023 UAW strikes, which included a walkout at the GM Wentzville plant were the GMC Canyon and Chevy Colorado are produced. The start of regular production was delayed again to December 11th, and yet again to December 18th. The latest production delay to early January was said to be the result of a parts shortage.

Nevertheless, new units of the 2024 GMC Canyon and 2024 Chevy Colorado have yet to ship out to dealers, leading to concerns among customers. Per previous coverage, GM’s current system falters when it comes to communicating important information with customers, such as estimated vehicle delivery times. GM Authority has argued in the past that GM vehicle tracking seems to be a major problem that should be overhauled.

While GM has yet to provide an explanation as to why new 2024 GMC Canyon units aren’t shipping, one GM Authority source indicates that new units are being held for “quality” in a manner similar to the launch for the 2023 model year. Unfortunately, the third-gen GMC Canyon has exhibited a few issues, including dented roofs resulting from touchless car wash services.

As a reminder, the 2024 GMC Canyon cradles the TurboMax 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine, while the updated GMT 31XX platform provides the underpinnings.

  1. It is most likely a quality control hold on shipping. They found something bad and are inspecting vehicles in the yard prior to shipping. I saw this with the 2016 Chevy Cruze.

    1. You all know by now, or should, the holdup is a software issue caused by GM deciding to give these trucks, (2024s), the Ultifi electrical system, like the new electrics aka Blazer EV which is also not selling or shipping.
Mary Barra mentioned this in a speech last week reported by the Detroit Free Press confirming this. She admitted that they waited too long and failed to hire enough people to tackle the problem.
I’ve got a ’24 Colorado WT built January 3rd sitting outside on a gravel lot there around Wentzville somewhere, so I’m among the pissed people waiting and waiting. A 34 year GM retiree so disappointed in the company

  3. I am another customer waiting on my delivery of a canyon AT4. Just happened that I ordered my truck on the day the strike ended. I was trying to make a deal on a 23 canyon but it didn’t work out, so I ordered one. Truck was built 3 weeks ago and as other GM customers no delivery date or any communication from GM. Such poor customer relations. Good thing most companies don’t run there business this way!!!

  4. I’ll tell you what the problem is I own a 2023 Colorado and they’re are major problems with it. Here’s a list of the issues: blind spot doesn’t work rear cross traffic doesn’t work. Body panels misaligned. The roof of the truck collapses in the car wash from the blowers . Have to pop it back up by hand from the inside. Turn the right blinker on when the blinker returns to his position it turns the left blinker on its on. Entertainment screen freezes constantly. Having trouble when towing my trailer vehicle is telling me none of my trailer lights are functioning when they are perfectly fine. So we’re waiting on all these parts to fix these issues and they’re taking months. So I’m assuming they’re not sending any of the 2024s out because of all the problems. Can’t even trade it in because no dealer will take it because of the condition it’s in.

      1. We here at Wentzville are working six days a week to get the product out.

        1. 6 days a week while entire shift of people are laid off. Don’t forget that part of the story.

        2. If you are working 6 days a week where are all the trucks? Dealers and customers don’t have them.

    2. I had to chime in here. You can’t say they’re all bad, I own one too, I was fortunate enough to custom order a ZR2 before the strike happened. It was delayed during the strike and was built after the strike ended and I took delivery in early December and it never sat on the GM lot – it shipped out immediately. I haven’t seen any of the issues you mentioned, although regarding the roof dent issue, I think they may have fixed that inline during the production run when they discovered the problem, which may apply to the other items you mentioned as well. I wonder if you may have an early production 2023. My truck was probably one of the last 2023’s off the line. If they are switching the ‘24’s to a new electric system as someone mentioned, then that could be the quality problem – why would they make such a major change so soon after launch? I hope those waiting on their trucks receive them soon, and I think it’s a great truck (my previous truck was a ‘19 Tacoma) and I’m happy I purchased the Colorado ZR2.

  5. I really want to keep a positive attitude towards GM, but what the hell is going on with them? I’m seriously considering going back to Toyota. Please tell us how much longer until we can get the pickup truck, or should we get our deposit back from the dealer and look elsewhere?

  6. Great looking truck. Too bad it wasn’t fully baked before launching. And they still don’t have it right.

It’s no coincidence that gm is having issues launching new products after they dumped thousands of people (including many very experienced engineers) to cut costs. Actions have consequences. The work from home edict during COVID when this truck was developed didn’t help either.

    They’ll figure it out eventually….maybe.

I will give them till spring (May) and if I don’t get any notice or a specific date .I’ll go back to Toyota in which I wanted in the first place, but those Canyons are so nice looking and they have a much better interior package.

    1. In the same boat. Ordered a Canyon in late December and have been told the order has been accepted and thats it. Now that Tacomas are starting to arrive and we have a local dealer that does not mark up its vehicles over msrp I may have to go take a look there. My son has a 2017 Tacoma with 130k trouble free miles

Coming out of a Wrangler Sahara Altitude. Wife loves the Jeep and this wait is just giving her ammo for not buying a Canyon. But that DENALI looks dynomite!!!

  14. My best friend ordered a 2023 in July of 2023. He never got it. Order was cancelled. He tried again in early January 2024 to order a 2024 Canyon. The dealer did not have an allocation for an AT4 or a Denali. This week, he was called by the dealer. The dealer had received an allocation for an AT4 with cloth seats or a Denali. My friend put in the order for a Denali and it was approved with a build date of mid March. He was told to expect it sometime in mid-April.
I hope he gets his truck. He has been very patient with GM.

  15. GM needs to get its s* together! They’re losing customers every day and providing terrible customer service. Dealers and customers are completely in the dark, only receiving canned answers to questions. No one has visibility into what the hell is happening with these mid-size trucks. If something goes wrong with the trucks already produced, good luck finding a dealer that knows how to fix them. Maybe 2026 will be the year.

    1. The buck stops on Mary’s desk, but none of the DEI/ESG servants here on GMA want to hold Mary accountable. They can’t handle the reality of her being a lousy leader.

A male CEO in her position would have been canned 2 years ago.

  16. Mary,
For goodness sakes, quit talking about this EV crap that no one wants and get us our trucks! We are all getting tired of this waiting game! I ordered a 2023 AT4 in June of last year only to see it get canceled in October, Got a 2024 accepted in late December, with a build date of February 4. The dealer say’s it’s built, but that’s all they got. Mary you are doing all of us a huge disservice. It appears that you don’t care about the 97% of your customer base that actually wants to buy a GM product and pander to the 3% of people that might by one of those crappy EV’s. Get on the Ball, Or I say someone needs to make a leadership change!

  17. I just got a email from the dealer ship on my 2024 Canyon Denali I ordered. She states “ GM Ana’s informed us that they are holding the Canyons on Quality Control, however, they are unable to give the dealership any additional information or possible release dates……more waiting. Crazy

  18. Here’s my nightmare experience…bought a ’23 Canyon AT4 back in Aug…right off the bat I was having Bluetooth issues…so the dealership did a software update and both dash screens went black…so they ordered a new radio module, with no ETA…took 3-1/2 months…in the meantime, I filed a Michigan Lemon Law claim (if a dealership holds your new (less than 12 months old) vehicle more than 30 days you are eligible to file…so…GM agreed to replace at (countless phone calls) at no extra cost. After driving +5 new loaners (2K miles each), my original 23 was fixed, so I would be driving that as a loaner until my 24 came in…but then after a few days, the side view mirror traffic lights were on and off for no reason and the windows would not open or close at times…so…here I am driving another dealer loaner waiting on my 24 that was built early Feb. …can’t wait😒

    1. If they can’t build a gas powered vehicle without electrical problems, how can they expect to build and all Electrical car; without more of the same? I have driven classic cars and trucks until now, all without an electric brain. I sure hope I don’t regret making the change. Until the Canyon, nothing really got me excited. Got to admit that I am worried about the move, as I could always fix my car my self, and trust me, I’m not a rocket scientist.

  19. Update; I go on the build and buy site everyday, and build my truck to see if the view inventory is there, as it was in 23.
to my surprise, it’s there today, so GM has updated that, but it still doesn’t show any in transit, but it appears that they will soon. At least it’s not more of the same, but could be.

Let’s forget about the GOOD OLD BOY MENTALITY and start building the damn vehicles. The upper management culture has to change. They’ve been “MILKING” the supplier issue for going 4 years now. If this is the definition of
“WE ARE PROFESIONAL GRADE” then GM’s got a real problem. Just say good bye to Mark and Mary and many others. I’ve had it…….
