The GM Authority Take

Chevrolet Brazil sales declined substantially in February, deepening the negative sales trend experienced in recent months. With the February sales performance, Chevrolet has accumulated a total of 11 consecutive months of contraction in the Brazilian market, which this time not only caused it to lose its leadership position, but also to fall to third place among the best-selling auto brands in the South American country, behind Fiat and Volkswagen.

Like in January, the primary reason for the decline in Chevrolet Brazil sales in February was the drastic drop in sales volume of the Chevrolet Onix, which has been Brazil’s best-selling vehicle for five consecutive years. In fact, February represented the second month that Onix sold fewer than 20,000 units in Brazil. The trend is likely directly related to the shortage of components halting production at the GM Gravataí plant where the vehicle is produced.

Despite the negative result, some models posted a healthy performance in February – primarily the all-new Chevrolet Tracker. The all-new subcompact crossover is continuing to significantly increase its sales volume, remaining the fastest-growing nameplate in Brazil.

In addition, the TrailBlazer SUV also posted an uptick in sales, both during the month and during the first two months of 2021.
