The GM Authority Take

Chevrolet Brazil sales decreased significantly in January, substantially higher than the 11.7 percent contraction suffered by the Brazilian market as a whole during the first month of the 2021 calendar year. In this way, Chevrolet accumulates ten consecutive months of decreasing sales in Brazil.

The results come on the heels of a significant improvement in sales volume experienced in December 2020, when Chevy obtained its highest sales figure in the last 18 months in Brazil. As such, Chevy once again lost the title of Brazil’s best-selling auto brand (which it historically held) as it was outsold by Fiat.

Although most models offered by Chevrolet in Brazil saw sales decrease, the biggest loss came from the Chevrolet Onix, which lost a significant 8,479 units on a year-over-year basis. Despite this event, the new subcompact remains the best-selling vehicle in Brazil by a long shot. Similarly, the Chevrolet Cruze also saw a significant decline of more than 2,000 units compared to January 2020.

By contrast, the Chevrolet Tracker subcompact crossover, Chevrolet S10 midsize pickup truck, Chevrolet TrailBlazer midsize SUV saw healthy increases in Brazil in January. Although the new Tracker lost momentum and fell to fourth place among the best-selling utility vehicles in January, its impressive triple-digit growth stands out, enabling it to continue as the fastest growing automobile nameplate in the Brazilian market.

Finally, the refreshed S10 and TrailBlazer performed well, posting stable sales over previous months.
