The GMC Sierra AT4X is a range off-road oriented pickup trucks that take the GMC Sierra AT4 to the next level as “the peak of premium off-roading.” GMC Sierra AT4X trucks are optimized for ultimate off-road performance and luxury, featuring many premium options that the “regular” Sierra AT4 trucks do not.
Currently, the AT4X trim level is only available on the GMC Sierra 1500, although as GM Authority exclusively reported, a GMC Sierra HD AT4X is coming for the 2024 model year.

Sierra 1500 AT4X
Introduced for the 2022 model year (technically the 2022.5 / interim model year) in conjunction with the Sierra 1500 refresh, the GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X does not replace the “regular” Sierra 1500 AT4, but is sold alongside it as a more capable and luxurious version of the AT4, becoming the range-topping off-road variant of the Sierra 1500.
Only one powertrain option is offered for the GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X – the 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine rated at 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. The Sierra AT4X features a two-speed transfer case with selectable modes for any off-road scenario, including Off-Road Mode, which grants momentum in low-traction environments, such as when traversing gravel or mud. Terrain Mode, available in 4-LO, enables one-pedal driving in low-speed, off-road scenarios to help the truck achieve greater control in rough environments.
The Sierra AT4X also features front and rear e-locking differentials, and is the only pickup in its class to offer such technology. This system sends power to the wheels that need it most in order to safely navigate mud, gravel and sand. Additionally, the lockers offer control when ascending or descending steep terrain.
The GMC Sierra AT4X features unique Multimatic DSSV spool-valve dampers that increase maximum front or rear suspension travel by 50 mm and 25 mm. The specific off-road chassis and suspension calibrations of the Sierra AT4X 1500 make it the most off-road capable truck in its class right off the assembly line.
The truck rides on 18-inch black wheels wrapped in LT265/70R18 Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac Mud-Terrain tires. A tough steel transfer case shield is included as standard, and customers can also opt for the available rocker guard accessories.
Inside, the Sierra AT4X features an exclusive Obsidian Rush interior colorway, with leather, Vanta ash wood trim, 16-way power adjustable massaging front seats, a 15-inch diagonal Head-Up Display, a 12-speaker Bose Premium Series audio system, among other technological features.
GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X AEV Edition
The 2023 Sierra 1500 AT4X AEV Edition is the most off-road capable factory Sierra 1500 ever. Developed with input from American Expedition Vehicles, the GMC Sierra AT4X AEV Edition features various parts from the aftermarket company intended to make it more capable and durable. This includes the following:
- AEV stamped steel front and rear bumpers with heavy duty recovery points and winch capability (front bumper)
- Five hot-stamped boron steel skid plates (including front approach, steering gear, transfer case, fuel tank and rear differential)
- Race-inspired, laser-engraved 18-inch AEV Salta wheels in gloss black finish with AEV’s recessed valve system for added protection
- 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires
- Updated front grille and fascia to accommodate the new bumper and larger tires, gloss black door handles and a black contrast inner tailgate
- AEV branding, including on bumpers, embroidered headrests and all-weather floor liners
- Available off-road rocker panel protectors to help shield the sills and frame rails and an optional bolt-on step assist when not off-roading
The GMC Sierra AT4X AEV Edition was revealed in July, and will become available to order later in the 2023 model year.
GMC Sierra HD AT4X
In March 2022, GM Authority exclusively reported that a GMC Sierra HD AT4X was in the works, and that the more capable off-road heavy duty truck will be sold alongside the existing GMC Sierra HD AT4. Shortly thereafter, we spied a camo-clad Sierra HD AT4X prototype that carried several features expected from such a product, including a modified front bumper, a skid plate and improved ground clearance.
In August 2022, we caught another GMC Sierra AT4X HD prototype undergoing testing, this time showing more of its undercarriage and suspension.
We expect that the GMC Sierra HD AT4X to launch for the 2024 model year, in conjunction with the refresh of the Heavy Duty truck.
