The GMC Sierra AT4 was the first-ever AT4 production model, debuting for the 2019 model year. It replaced the old All Terrain trim as a new sub-brand of GMC, focusing on off-road capability and matching styling. It’s been a hit ever since, with the AT4 moniker spreading to most models in the GMC brand.
However, GMC Sierra AT4 and Sierra AT4X owners are noticing a problem with their trucks. It’s not a problem with its capabilities for off-roading, towing, or hauling. It’s a problem with a trim piece on the front grille flying off of the truck.
Our reader, Max, brought this strange issue with these trucks to our attention. “Multiple users on Reddit and AT4forum.com (myself included) have been reporting the top piece of the 2022 AT4 grill is flying off at high speed,” Max told us. “Mine came off going 60 miles an hour, hit my windshield, and scratched up the truck.” This happened to Max while his truck only had 18,000 miles on it, and he reported the issue to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
This trim piece is at the very top of the grille opening, where the grille meets the hood. When you pop the hood of the GMC Sierra AT4 or AT4X, the part that opens is right above this trim piece. When zooming into photos of the problem posted online, it looks like a failure in the plastic anchors that attach the trim piece to the hood. It appears to only be a problem on 2022 and newer trucks from the Sierra’s most recent facelift.
We took to Reddit and found this to be a disturbingly common issue. “Going down the interstate, and something starts flapping. All of a sudden, part of the grill flies off and narrowly missed a vehicle behind us,” Reddit user Lolo5sue posted on the r/gmcsierra board. “Anyone else having issues with this cheap piece of plastic?”
Several users responded, saying it either happened to them or they’ve seen this issue pop up on forums. The original poster said it was not covered under warranty and cost $1,300 to replace.
Thanks for the tip, Max! Hopefully, drawing attention to the problem will lead to a solution. As of this writing, GM hasn’t publicly addressed the issue.

Wouldn’t happen if it had the diesel
This is a diesel.
Thumbs up for honesty in reporting on this site but after the never-ending recalls at Ford and all these GM and Stellantis quality issues, it’s Korea or Japan for us next time around. With a 10-year warranty. Tired of these games. This happened once before, back in the early 90s when we converted to Japan (and came back a decade later). Bet you can guess why. What’s old is new again.
A couple of zip ties and it’s fixed.
Since no one’s on the line wants to have to handle tooling for fasteners, and because 6 screws might cost $2.00, I’m sure it’s just “snap on” and now, “blow off.”
I had the Chevrolet emblem on my 2024 Traverse come off. It’s not bolted to the grill rather held in place loosely by molded plastic clips on the emblem. You can easily remove the emblem just by lightly prying it off with your fingernails! Same thing happened to a friend with his!
Happened to my 2022 GMC 1500 Sierra Denali Ultimate driving down the freeway. Took it to the dealer under warranty but the part is on back order with no estimated delivery date. The part that came off can’t be serviced you have to replace the whole front grill.
Plastic parts make it easy and less costly to refresh the vehicle. Zip ties should be included.
another fine GM moment.
Same to me 2022 AT4X
