GM Considers Cadillac Optiq, Lyriq, Vistiq Replacements Of XT Crossovers (Updated)

Cadillac is revamping its lineup with a long list of all-electric vehicles, and although the luxury marque has changed course with regard to plans to go all-electric by 2030, some of Caddy’s older ICE-based nameplates aren’t long for this world. As it turns out, that includes the Cadillac XT4, XT5, and XT6, each of which is poised for discontinuation in the near future. In their stead, Cadillac will offer a trio of new battery-powered models – the Cadillac Optiq, Lyriq, and the Vistiq.

According to GM Authority sources familiar with the matter, GM is internally considering the all-electric Cadillac Optiq, Lyriq, and Vistiq as the indirect replacements for the ICE-based XT4, XT5, and XT6 crossovers, respectively. Indeed, if there were any doubt over where Caddy’s XT lineup was headed, the launch of the Optiq, Lyriq, and Vistiq as indirect successors should be a good indication.

As GM Authority covered last week, the Cadillac XT4 will be discontinued from the U.S. market following the end of XT4 production at the GM Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas City this coming January. The facility will temporarily suspend all production activity in anticipation of a retooling effort to support production of the next-generation Chevy Bolt EV.

The Cadillac XT4, which will be replaced by the Cadillac Optiq in the U.S.

Cadillac XT4

The Cadillac XT5 and XT6 also have one foot out the door. Per previous GM Authority coverage, XT5 and XT6 production is expected to wind down at the GM Spring Hill plant in Tennessee as the facility undergoes a transition to support additional EV production, including production of the Cadillac Lyriq and Cadillac Vistiq. Essentially, as production of the Lyriq ramps up for global markets and the new Vistiq starts rolling off the line, we wonder if the Spring Hill facility will have the capacity required to support the XT5 and XT6.

“We will continue to be guided by customer demand to determine the pace at which we transition to electrification,” Cadillac spokesperson, Michael Albano, tells GM Authority in a statement. “In 2025, the Cadillac showroom will be split almost evenly between ICE and EV products offering customers more choice than ever. In terms of Spring Hill, the plant offers the unique ability to build XT5, XT6 along side VISTIQ and LYRIQ at our anticipated volumes. There are not a capacity issue at Spring Hill.”

Second-generation Cadillac XT5

That all said, the Cadillac XT crossover lineup isn’t dead yet. Though the XT4 will soon be sunset, the XT5 and XT6 are still on sale in the U.S. In China, all three nameplates (XT4, XT5, XT6) will continue to be available alongside their EV successors. In fact, the second-gen XT5 is already available in the Chinese market, and the XT6 received an update just this week. We’re not aware of plans to bring either of the updated models Stateside, but recent changes in the U.S. political climate might change that.

  1. Dumb @ss move, especially since EV demand is leveling off and the tax credit is apparently killed. Another one of Barra’s Blunders.

    1. Agreed. They need to redo the XT models and at least bring them on par with the IQs in terms of design and interiors.

      1. You gm dolts are something else. All of you gm clowns do realize gm is the taco bell of the automotive world, right? Everything on the menu is the same, it’s just rearranged and called something different. Who cares if Cadillac goes all electric, just go buy a buick or gmc if want i.c.e., they’re all the same. It’s a shame I have to explain to clown gm worshippers that they can get an acadia if they want a luxury traverse. Who wants all of these $75k fwd cars that spy on you anyway?

    3. The ironic part is just like in 2008, they will land up in a financial pickle but unlike 2008 where it was for falling behind in innovation while everyone else raced ahead with having variety and engines that were more fuel efficient, they will land up in it for going too far ahead of themselves and ramming into a brick wall realizing your traditional XT-whatever owner isn’t ready to switch yet has moved on. Its like GM has zero concept of moderation. Yes its good to stay ahead of innovation but what good is that when you alienate your current customers?

    1. I’m waiting to do the same with a CT5, which I suspect will only be another model year or two at most after the CT4.

    1. EVs are also more expensive. No downs? How about being heavier than comparable ICE vehicles and running through a $2000 set of tires twice as fast as an ICE vehicle?

      Reply
    2. No downs- so you can plug in and get a charge in under 5 minutes correct? And you can go to any town and find a free working charger correct? And these EV’s are powered by rainbows and sunshine to I suppose and the insurance is cheaper to correct? Thy also use magic brakes, steering, suspension components, have ever lasting wipers and tires and window regulators, electronics that last for 50 years and batteries that will never fail too. Wow the comments on these pages get dumber by the day!

      1. we have a Lyriq. More expensive to operate than our ICE BMW as California electric cost, among, if not the, highest in US. Why did we get? It’s my wife’s car as she has long commute and were able to get single passenger car pool stickers and saves her every other day stop at gas stations. we charge at home. Only use Lyriq for work commute, long trips done with ICE vehicle.

      2. You mostly charge at home. You save so much time not going to a gas station at all. You charge your phone no? You can charge an EV.

        Reply
        1. A lot of people can not charge at home like myself. So i would have to wait at least 30 minutes to charge to 80% max.

  7. Be nice if they at least had some of these “replacements” at dealers before raising a stink about killing off other models. The Lyriq drives fantastic but is just too big. The Equinox EV is about the perfect size and also drives great. With more power, a Lyriq interior, and (hopefully) better suspension the Optiq is sounding pretty great. So where is it?

  8. Man, there’s a lot of stupid in the comments left on this site. I’ve never seen a more closed off, simple minded group. Some of the comments are so idiotic that I can’t even begin to combat it with facts that can be proven. Even if we did, they would just argue with “alternative facts” anyhow.

XT’s are near dead in the USA. Good. The XT4 is one of the worst vehicles I’ve ever been subjected to. The XT5 is nearly as bad, but is old and no longer competitive. The XT6 was never a real player and showed in it’s sale numbers or lack of. Cadillac can’t bring these new EV players out fast enough and they now need to work on giving us some great EV sedans.

        2. I drive a huge gas hog. Inexpensive to maintain and 5 minutes to fill up.
          What’s not to love.
Oh, and it will outlast any ev on the road since batteries will last 10 years max and means 100% writeoff after those ten years.

          Reply
          1. Woods: You are so wrong on those facts other than being able to fill up faster. However, can you fill you tank while you sleep? I can. But there isn’t an ICE engine that will go the miles and time that an EV will go without rebuilds. The amount of money it would take to keep that ICE going would dwarf the costs on an EV. And in over 25,000 miles thus far of EV driving, I’ve spent ZERO on maintenance. Zero. On any ICE vehicle I would have spent at least $300 or more if changing oil every 6,000 miles at about $75 per change. Then there’s the time spent doing them. Then the used oil to contend with and the filters. Over time, the trans services, radiator flushes, plug/wires, injectors, cat converters, and the list goes on.

You are so far out in left field that we can’t even see you any more. But go ahead and keep poisoning yourself and kids and grandkids. Good job.

            Reply
          2. Yes it is about what I want when it’s my money. The car I drive won’t make one iota of difference for the future of my kids or grandkids. There’s no way you are going to get every driver in the world to go electric and even if you could, the difference in air quality would be miniscule at best.

            Reply
          3. @Sparky.
We dont have chargers in the building, so i would need to wait at least 30 minutes to charge to max 80%, again and again. That cost a lot of money in time and is super inconvenient! And the writeoff of an ev to 100% in 10 years time max because the batteries die, make the depreciation skyrocket. And you spend at least 20.000 more then an ICE in purchase. So i’m more than happy to spent 300 on oil. The ICE version will outlast any ev at the fraction at the cost. And i love burning fossil fuel, so thats a win win for me.

I carefully analyzed my needs and the trade offs between a gas car and an EV and the EV was a better fit, FOR ME!

At least I am more open minded and realize that you may need/want an ICE vehicle and I don’t have to stoop to insults to justify my choice.

        1. There is no mandate, and the ICE powered cars are not going anywhere. I personally will not go into an EV for now but I understand that there are lots of people interested in the transition. What I do not understand is why there are so violent opposition to the other choice. Luckily GM is preparing for the future and is in a good position right now to serve both markets. I like what I see them doing.

    2. The American luxury brands Cadillac and Lincoln are distant also-rans to BMW, Lexus, and Benz. Acura and Infiniti are more Caddy’s and Lincoln’s competitors these days. It is criminal how gm and Ford management decimated these brands from simply badge engineering Ford sedans as was the case with Lincoln to the endless model name changes we see with Cadillac. The reason why ICE Cadillac crossovers are not selling- is that Barra and company cheapened them by putting them on Chevy FWD platforms instead of putting them on a RWD platform to be a true competitor to BMW and Benz. I would certainly hate to be a Cadillac or Lincoln dealer these days. I honestly do not see how they can stay in business.

      1. Cadillac and Acura has peers regarding not price but prestige. GM has repeatedly tried to reboot Cadillac and failed. Too many brands are going high end EV (Jaguar and Maserati to make a few) and it’s risky. Buick and GMC are healthier higher margin brands

    3. Come 2035, we will see a mix of more fuel efficient vehicles including EVs, PHEVs (pioneered by GM and best for environment), and efficient ICE/ICE hybrids like what Mazda is pioneering. Toyota will partner w/Mazda and new deactivated cylinder technology will be a big player

Soon we’ll all be relegated to public transportation when the “Government” determines, all cars, no matter the type are dangerous. I’ll just say this: It’s hard to understand why the XTs will continue and be updated in China but here there isn’t “capacity” for them in the US when we know Orion is currently idle and Hamtamck is producing a fraction of its capability. Both are now “EV plants” but GM can’t sell what they’re supposed to be building.

The base price unofficially is shown to be nearly $20K more than the current XT6. I believe GM has screwed themselves and their customers. Some other brands offer or are gearing up for a hybrid but not Cadillac. Toyota is the only brand I am aware of getting praise for their decision to not go full EV.

Chargers are where I need them and EVgo is free from Cadillac. So convenient to charge in my garage. The charging station at Bucees in Temple, Texas has 70 chargers. Flying J EVgo have pull through covered chargers. Most everyone I talk to at charging stations really love their EV. A real joy to drive.

  21. The market will move on with or without GM. If the consumer decides they aren’t ready for EVs and decide they will stick to an ICE or hybrid for the time being, they will move onto a brand that will cater to their needs. Plain and simple. And in many cases, they NEVER come back. They’ll remember their Cadillac and how they love their current Lexus more for any reason. GM is right to invest in EV R&D if it turns out to be the future. The last thing you want to do is land in Kodaks position. But alienating your customers because you want to make what you want completely disregarding the consumer will only encourage them to look elsewhere.

No electronics company was forcing people into LCD tvs away from their CRTs until they became fully mainstream. The EV is not there yet.

Hopefully GM provides Cadillac with a smaller vehicle than the Optiq.
Make it an XT4 sized vehicle and it will sell like hotcakes around the World.

The main issue with Cadillac going pure EV’s is not the mere fact that they will be EV only, it is that GM is trying to sell Luxury vehicles that charge at 150kW and 200kW while the newer Luxury makers are utilizing 800 Volt architectures that can easily charge at 350kW

Now throw in that Tesla literally just announced 500kW charging and GM needs to upgrade their EV’s ASAP to charge quicker.

Also just my personal opinion but it is extremely stupid on GM’s part to NOT offer Frunks. I mean the Lyriq and Vistiq have long hoods. It is inexcusable!!!

  24. GM is disciplined talking a long-term view regarding capital allocation. The company will not open a new factory or even retool/ad an overnight shift to a pre existing factory.

This sounds well thought out but GM should not quit profitable segments, like XT4 or Malibu, when China has already done the R&D. The current China Buick Lacrosse–rebadged as Malibu–would, given its size, quiet ride, high quality, allow GM to grow share. Same goes for the XT 4, 5 and 6.

EVs will be part of the future, however, both Traverse EV and a Bolt family are will saturate the price point. Bolt could be the next Toyota Prius but EV Equinox could have worn the badge
