Cadillac XT4 Production To End In January 2025

Automotive News reports that the Cadillac XT4 will be permanently discontinued when it ceases production at the GM Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas City in January 2025.

GM said previously that there would be a temporary pause on XT4 production to retool the factory for the next-generation Chevy Bolt EV. “Fairfax will produce both the Bolt EV and XT4 on the same assembly line, which gives GM flexibility to respond to changes in customer demand,” a GM spokesman said in May 2024. Plans have changed, and GM announced on Thursday that XT4 production will not continue in late 2025 as originally planned.

“General Motors is confident in our strong ICE and EV portfolio and will lean into growth opportunities guided by customer demand,” a GM spokesperson said in a statement to Automotive News. “There is no change to our previously announced $391 million investment and staffing plans at Fairfax Assembly. This facility will continue to play a critical role in GM’s future with the new Chevrolet Bolt EV.”

The Cadillac XT4 first debuted for the 2019 model year and received a mid-cycle refresh for 2024, which will only last for two model years. Its discontinuation marks a short lifespan for the XT4 with only one generation. Its spiritual successor is the 2025 Cadillac Optiq, the luxury brand’s smallest and most affordable electric crossover, which should begin deliveries shortly before the XT4 ceases production.

As for the sales performance of the Cadillac XT4, its U.S. sales numbers have been similar to the rest of the XT lineup so far in 2024. As of Q3 2024, the XT4 notched 15,688 sales YTD, which was an 11.9 percent decline compared to the same period in 2023. That makes it the second slowest-selling crossover or SUV in the Cadillac lineup, beating only the Cadillac XT6. However, the Cadillac XT4 far outsells the XT5 and XT6 in Canada.

We’re expecting the next-generation Chevy Bolt EV to be unveiled in Summer or Fall 2025 for the 2026 model year. The new Bolt will not be a clean-sheet design; it will essentially be a heavily refreshed Chevy Bolt EUV riding on the BEV2 platform but using newer battery and motor technology.

  1. With 45/47 returning, It’s a delusional mistake to keep making something no one really wants exclusively. Maybe they should add an performance, ice rwd CUV to replace XT4..

  2. Not a big surprise in my opinion. The XT4 was a noisy, buzz box that seemed less refined than non-luxury CUV examples like the RAV4 or CR-V. It was better equipped in many ways than lesser brand GM offerings, but I’d take a Buick over the Cadillac 4 out of 5 times. The XT4 tried hard to look the Cadillac look, but it lacked the aura, ‘feel’ of true Cadillac luxury and performance.

    1. Less refined than a Rav4? I own a Rav4 and an XT5 with the same 2.0L Turbo engine. So I experience this comparison you are making directly with my own two cars and I can promise you the AR engine in the Rav is nowhere near as refined as the LSY in the XT5. The Rav has been a solid and reliable workhorse but it is by no means a refined engine. It is as raspy as they come with Toyotas while my XT5 is smooth, quiet and peppy in the larger vehicle than the XT4. So I’m not sure where you are basing your facts here.

      1. Try the newer RAV4 with the A25A 2.5l. Its very quiet and refined.

        1. I’ll have to try it out. I haven’t taken an Uber or Lyft in a long time so I haven’t had a chance to sit in a more recent model Toyota. Mine is a 2016 and while the 6-speed helps avoid it from roaring at high RPMs (unless I intentionally floor it), my aunt had a 2009 with a 4-speed and man that thing made the interior panels vibrate with how unrefined and raspy it was.

          1. The real problem is the XT4 is nearly the same price as a loaded R4 is about $45-$48K… gm has no business fielding such a pathetic excuse for a Cad… they ought to be embarrassed… but they’re not, just stupid… All Sr Mgt at gm needs the boot… they’re incompetent…

  3. I bet if this vehicle was built in Mexico, Korea, or China it would not be discontinued.

    1. You got that right.

  4. I really don’t know much about this model, but discontinuing it because of EV production taking its place seems like a dumb move, in the current environment.

    1. Well we all know the “GM way”- smart and prudent decisions usually follow a couple years after the other companies figured it out

    2. So, Cadillac abandoned the XT4 and basically the XT5 for EV reasons…guess President Trump’s proclamation of drill, drill, drill went on deaf ears at GM. Guess that’s why the government had to bail out GM years ago, and they still have not learned their lesson…dumb…agh!

      1. Let’s hope Trump puts some nice tariffs on some of these vehicles gm imports from low wage countries. It’s getting so gm is selling more vehicles produced outside of the US than in it. Disgraceful. Barra and the rest of gm should be ashamed.

        1. You realize they are going still keeping the Kansas plant open and producing car there, right?

          Reply
      2. Well MBarra is a huge supporter of KH & Quid Pro Jo Jo… she is a terrible CEO and should have been fired 8 years or more ago. One of the longest worst gm CEO’s of all time I believe. She ate at the table and was fully onboard for forcing EV’s down our throats just like her overlords, the Dims. No wonder gm isn’t ready to sell Hybrids or better ICE cars & trucks, they’re incompetent.

    3. It wouldn’t be GM if they didn’t make decisions that lacked common sense. Its become a signature feature of theirs. Much like Porsche wouldn’t be Porsche if they didn’t have the ignition on the left of the steering column.

  5. Bought our 2024 XT4 Premium Luxury last month and we love it ($47,615 list played a big reason vs price & size of XT5), along with compliments from many friends & family. It was in transit for a month and a half from KC plant to Memphis while we waited for it equipped just like we wanted. We also bought a 2017 Camaro rs and 2020 Equinox new in 2018 & 2022. So two of our three vehicles we love now dropped by gm who builds what they want, not what this long term gm family wants. Big mistake as usual, again!

  7. We’ve had 3 XT4 leases for my wife, a 2019, 2021, and now a 2024. The updates made to the 2024 have been worth wild and as my wife likes small vehicles, it has fit the family well. My biggest complaint has been the 20″ wheels and how they ruin the ride. Unfortunately our dealer rarely specs cars with the base 18″s.
As for the Optiq, we’ll see, seems like a mistake to replace the XT4 with a electric only offering.

    1. For 20’s you need the Sport model with the Active Sport Suspension. That’s what I have been telling everyone.

  8. the XT4 never sold as well as expected, but i think the gremlin rearend made it ugly with much less cargo area that the cheaper more stylish buick envision. even my brother went and bought his first lincolin corsair for that reason.

    1. I test drove two Xt4’s and two XT5’s for 2024. Both XT4s had paint issues and loose interior trim. I went with the XT5. Let’s hope Cadillac comes to its senses and at least offers one ICE SUV other than the Escalade. If not, I’ll be shopping elsewhere next time.

  9. Tells me the Buick Envision may be dead also after this refresh cycle ends probably in ’27 since they are the same body. Doubt GM would continue to sell only 1 model of a particular body. Makes no sense from a financial side.

    1. The Envision is more likely to be dead because of the Chinese spyware.

  11. SO!! Let me get this straight, XT4 Discontinued in January 2025, the Refreshed XT5 will stay in China and not be available in the States. What does that mean for the XT6?? Looks like the US will not have anything left in XT Family. Bunch of BS GM I will have to start looking elsewhere I guess. Thought about 2025 XT6 but will not put the money out if it is going by the wayside, at my age will not consider Electric, and the 2.5 in Acadia, Traverse, and Enclave is way to noisy.

    Reply
    1. At this rate, the Enclave Avenir is more Cadillac material than the XT6. So you can bet the XT6 will get chopped. They will have EVs only and wonder why Lexus, Acura, Lincoln, and Genesis have seen sudden upticks in customers from Cadillac dealers.

  12. Well that totally seals the deal for me. My 2022 XT4 lease expires in May. I never purchase off the lot, always factory order. This makes my choice much easier, goodbye GM! Not sold on EV, so I’m going to go PHEV which the General has failed to produce here in the US. Hello Sweden!

  13. Too much money and not enough car for what it is.

  14. I’ve seen a few ’24s around now, and the new front styling and interior updates look really good. The rear could use additional updating, but the real shame is that they didn’t work on the suspension, steering, and engine. I always liked the packaging and size of the XT4, and would have considered an XT4-V as was rumored at one time, especially since the V engineers seem to work wonders with suspensions. After all, BMW and MB sell quite a few performance versions of similarly sized utes; why not Cadillac? Of course, no advertising or other product placement doesn’t help sales either. Marketing at Cadillac is really pretty pathetic.

  15. GM-Cadillac, should return back PHEV Plug-in hybrid electric or Hybrid, like VOLT 2019 but improve version. This will replace a version of XT4 & XT5 Cadillac Suv.

  18. XT4 racked up 15,688 in YTD sales while CT4 sol only 4,900. How come CT4 is still there, but not XT4. Strange.
I am sure XT4 makes more profit that CT4.

    1. They don’t have a replacement yet. I do think they are itching to discontinue it.

      Reply
  19. There won’t be a replacement. Both CT’s will be gone within 2 years. They don’t pay for themselves. It’s expensive to run a plant so far below its capacity and the CT’s are the only 2 products built there now that Camaro is gone. This is why the CT6 didn’t survive in the US.
