With the introduction of the all-new, third-generation 2023 GMC Canyon, Big Red’s midsize pickup truck received a thorough overhaul to its exterior design, interior layout, and powertrain lineup. Now, one such upgrade was the addition of the Global B electronic architecture.
As with a majority new General Motors’ products, the third-generation of the GMC Canyon has adopted the Global B electronic architecture – which is also known as the Vehicle Intelligence Platform or VIP. This allows GM to perform over-the-air (OTA) updates, where the vehicles software is updated via a wireless connection, thus making software-related recalls much easier and efficient to handle.
In addition, the Global B structure offers improved communication between various in-vehicle systems, creating a more integrated approach to electronic features. Furthermore, vehicles with this technology feature smoother and more natural infotainment integration, along with other digital user experiences and user interface elements.
One of the more well-known applications of the Global B platform has been with Super Cruise, as GM has remotely updated the semi-autonomous driving technology several times already. However, with this in mind, the 2023 GMC Canyon – nor the 2023 Chevy Colorado – will never offer Super Cruise despite adopting the electronic framework.
As a reminder, the 2023 GMC Canyon is offered with a single powertrain configuration, the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine. Only available in the High Output tune, this powerplant is rated at 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. For comparison, the Canyon’s corporate cousin and platform mate, the Chevy Colorado, is offered with two tunes of the L3B engine, along with the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L2R engine in entry-level trims.
In regard to transmission choices, all 2023 Canyon units utilize an updated version of GM’s eight-speed automatic transmission. RWD is standard on the starting Elevation trim level, while 4WD is optional. 4WD is also equipped as standard on AT4, AT4X and Denali trims.
Under the skin, the all-new Canyon rides on an updated variant of the GMT 31XX platform, which it shares with the 2023 Chevy Colorado. Meanwhile, production takes place at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri.
