Chevrolet Volt Outsold By Nissan Leaf In July, As Well As So Far This Year

One of the more closely watched automotive rivalries in recent years is that between the gas-optional Chevrolet Volt and the all-electric Nissan Leaf. While both cars have their pros and cons, it seems that sales are a “pro” for the Leaf.
In July, Nissan sold 1,864 Leafs (Leaves?), whereas Chevy sold 1,788 Volts, with one of them now belonging to our own Manoli Katakis. To compare these numbers to July 2012, the Leaf sales went up 372%, and the Volt sank 3%. This is the fourth month in 2013 where the Leaf has outsold the Volt.
For the entire year thus far, the Leaf is ahead by a slim 60 units, but hopes to take the sales win for the year, as Nissan lost that very race in 2012. Interestingly enough, the best monthly sales for the Volt have been as high as 2,961, and for the Leaf – 2,236.
The upcoming months to close out the year 2013 will be fast-paced for the world of EVs, for a few reasons. Naturally, the desire to sell all of the 2013 models (and possible 2012 models) on dealer lots will be incentive enough to drop prices. On top of this, there are more competitors on the market now than ever before, as the Tesla Model S production has gained a lot of steam, along with the likes of the Ford Focus EV, Fiat 500 EV, etc. And all of this is just the beginning of a war in a rapidly growing market.
I haven’t seen a Leaf yet in central Ohio, but see several Volts each week. Saw a silver today, very sharp.
Lets see here butt ugly car or stylish car with gas option to charge battery. Uhhh I think its obvious… Hands down the Volt is the way to go no matter what.
It really does speak to how missled people are about the Volt though.
Local dealer has been sitting on a couple of leaves(Leafs) here for what seems like months now, but the Volts seem to keep moving(less and less of them on display) albeit rather slowly.
Hero worship. the leaf sits in awe it’s light dimed. Staring at the VOLT. Thinking I want to be like you when I grow up.
I’ve only seen one leaf, but seen many Volts. I drive a lot of highway and maybe that’s why. No one is brave enough to venture out of city limits with a leaf.
No one is brave enough to venture out of city limits with a leaf.
Or a Model S for that matter…
Shouldn’t the leaf be compared to the new Chevy Spark coming in a few months? When the rest of the world builds something that is apples to apples to the Volt!
Let me look at this, the leaf outsells the Volt by a few units and the Volt sells for over 10k more then the leaf!
Is this a big win for the leaf, to sell more cars then a car that is so much cheaper in price! If I told you that a car that cost 15k sold more cars then a car that cost 25k would that be a big supprise?
The 2014 Chevy Spark EV started its sales a bit early in June, but they are selling well in California and Oregon. I know GM sees this as good news and will produce more EVs to begin the nationwide distribution before December 2013. Then Nissan Leaf sales will drop faster!
2014 Chevy Volt MSRP slashed to $34995. Now let’s see how sales compare in the 2nd half of this year. After all, the Leaf benefited greatly from its price cut.
I have seen more Model S than Leafs here in Ohio. 2 to 1.
Volts are a daily thing and often two or more a day summer and winter.
As good as the Volt is, I think it’s about time for a serious engineering revision. A greater electric range would be a nice start, then a more powerful engine and enhanced driving dynamics some time down the road. Plus I really hope to see GM spread this technology out into other products soon.
Bigger engine? I’m I missing something here? The engine has zero to do with how it drives! It only charges the battery!
Now longer range! I get, other models understand, but bigger engine?
Now if you have a diesel engine instead of gas!
The new ELR will have more power and I suspect it may not lose any range if anything gain some.
I just heard it was going to be something like 56 HP more. I am not sure how they calculate it. Not sure if it is gas or electric motor HP.
The ELR may show some of the new upgrades for the second gen Volt that is coming.
