While both the 1980s Buick Regal and Chevy El Camino boast dedicated followings and are based on the same GM G-Body platform, the two vehicles are unique from each other in many ways. That being said, what if you wanted to combine the imposing looks of the Grand National with the utility of the El Camino? Well, one such combination is currently up for grabs online.
Listed for auction on Bring a Trailer, this Buick Regal-bodied 1986 Chevy El Camino features a clean Connecticut title – which lists the car as an El Camino – along with a Carfax report that shows mileage inconsistency. Interestingly, there’s also a Carfax report for the Regal donor, which found that a junk title / certificate was issued in November 2016.
Starting with the exterior, the black Regal bodywork has been modified to accommodate for the cargo bed and chassis of the El Camino underneath. Interestingly, the tailgate was fabricated from a Regal rear panel assembly. Some additional details include body-color bumpers, dual side mirrors, a tonneau cover, and GNX badging. Notably, there’s a scratch on the right quarter-panel, as well as bed wear.
As for rollers, this 1980s conglomerate rides on cross-lace GNX-style 16-inch black wheels with chrome trim rings. Braking duties are handled by power-assisted front discs and rear drums.
Moving to the cabin, the split bench seat is upholstered in gray cloth, while creature comforts include power windows, an AM/FM cassette player, cruise control, and air conditioning. Finally, the driver is greeted by a two-spoke tilt steering wheel, an 85-mph speedometer, a 6,000-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges.
Under the hood lies a naturally aspirated 5.0L V8 gasoline engine that’s equipped with a K&N air cleaner assembly and rebuilt carburetor. Output is sent to the rear wheels via the GM four-speed automatic transmission.
So, what are you thinking, dear reader? Is this Regal-El Camino fusion scratching an 80s itch you didn’t know you had? Or would you rather keep the two G-Body vehicles separate? Vote in the poll below, and let us know your thoughts in the comments section.

GM should revive the Chevy El Camino as a pickup, using the Malibu body and power train.
No they shouldn’t.
Should have the turbo V6. What’s the point with the Chevy engine. You’re making a Buick truck, put the Buick motor in it. Waste of time..
I was so close to buying a 1975 Buick Regal coupe with LR quarter damage and a 1975 El Camino with front end damage at a Copart in Florida. And this was before Covid, so prices were reasonable. The new vehicle would be, simply, an “El Regal”! The registration would even be possible in California as a smog check would never be required.
Certainly unique but not a mashup we needed.
Some like it – some do not, but it is certainly better than driving a minivan . . . or a Ford.
something different for sure.
Love it , I’m a proud owner of both vehicles so it’s a very GEAR head twist both G -body GM and unique is why I own mine…..guess the GN had a baby by El camino lol its perfect should of had Twins
Bring back the GN and GNX!
I most definitely like it IAM a AUTOMOTIVE fan including Ford’s ! I have a GMC Caballero and old f150 and I really like the match up !!! I think the Buick is better than a Cutlass would be!!! Cool idea
Definitely something for a car collection… Just keep adding it to my collection…
