The Toyota Camry remains the segment’s best-seller despite a nine percent dip in sales for 76,905 deliveries. The Honda Accord followed in second place with a 32 percent slip to 38,794 units, about half the deliveries of the Camry. The Malibu (see running Chevy Malibu sales) maintained third with an 11 percent dip to 36,360 units and just 2.4K deliveries behind second. The Nissan Altima stayed in fourth with a three percent uptick to 31,313 units. The Hyundai Sonata followed in fifth with a 40 percent jump to 17,983 units, while the Kia K5, its corporate sibling, placed sixth with a 63 percent dive to 6,054 units. The midsize mainstream sedan segment fell 15 percent to 212,461 units in Q2 2024, meaning Chevy Malibu sales slightly outperformed the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

Chevy Malibu sales during the second quarter of 2024 were down to nearly match the segment’s performance. The Toyota Camry continues to lead this segment. The Honda Accord again placed second, though the two models actually switched spots in Q3 2023. However, the Bow Tie brand’s only remaining sedan in the U.S., which has been around since the 2015 model year, is holding its own.

GM began planning the next-generation Malibu in late 2022. Since GM will end production of the Malibu this year to make way for the next-generation all-electric Chevy Bolt EV, the future of the Malibu nameplate is uncertain.

The mainstream midsize sedan class continues to shrink in favor of crossovers. The Nissan Altima is expected to retire like the Malibu, joining the discontinued Subaru Legacy.

About Chevrolet Malibu

The 2024 Chevy Malibu is the ninth model year of the ninth-generation nameplate, with just a handful of changes and updates over the 2023 Malibu. One of those includes the 2024 Chevy losing the standard spare wheel and tire combo, which was replaced by GM’s tire inflator kit. Here’s everything new and different for the 2024 Malibu.

The 2025 Chevy Malibu will arrive with only one significant change: a new Night Shade Metallic exterior paint option.

  1. Even if its a fleet queen, I don’t see how it makes sense to let this die on the vine. Even if its just an extensive facelift and not a whole new model, seems to make sense to keep around.

    1. I don’t get why you would kill the car that can easily get past the Accord sales if GM decides to give it an extensive refresh. I beleive it will ease past 50k per quarter easily (with the heavy refresh). Also blows my mind how it won’t turn a profit by selling over 50k even when XT4 and Envision are based on the same platform and their combined sales are much lower than Malibu.
Is there no one at GM who can think clearly w/o having their heads in their *****

      1. “GM began planning the next-generation Malibu back in late 2022. And while GM will end Malibu production this year to make way for production of the next-generation all-electric Chevy Bolt EV, an all-new Malibu is still expected to launch for the 2026 or 2027 model year.”

Doesn’t this mean it is not going away?
If they need space for the Chevy Bolt EV, they should get rid of the XT4 and keep the Malibu.

      2. GM has done its best to end the Malibu by refusing to update it, removing popular options, giving it an unpopular drive train, and refusing to advertise it. So who is surprised that sales are tanking? Now GM can say we have to end it because it isn’t selling. Conspiracy theory? Maybe? You decide.

        1. I feel that it should continue without a stop gap in production ! Everything does not have to be SUV or pickup truck ! Why not build the malibu along side the bolt EV selling it special order ! It can be done !

    1. My Mother owns one and I rented one for a week. It’s a pretty decent product. OF course, it’s the old story where if GM put just a little more money into the product to benchmark the competition instead of saving every penny they can, it would propel them back to the top. We will never see it happen with the current management structure.

  6. Market is changing monthly as well as the climate for electric cars. Electric is not the future anytime soon and everyone is starting to see it. Mercedes is already pulling back and investing in ICE engines again. GM I bet is doing the same. EV’s didn’t do what everyone, especially the government thought they would do. Leave the Government out of business and let them do what the customer wants.

Funny how they want to call Trump a dictator when the Democrats are doing exactly what they accuse Trump of doing. They want to control your life….that’s what a dictator is.

So let’s get out of cars altogether, and overstuff our lineup with 4-cyl CUVs…

  9. Sio much for we are committed to sedans at least at Chevrolet. It will just be a matter of time before the kill off the only 2 remaining at Cadillac and have literally nothing in that category. Now I see why so many of my car enthusiasts friends say we are in Melaize era II and they are right!

  10. The Malibu is another taste of GM arrogance! An affordable car that gets great gas mileage that is built right here in the USA! I have owned 4 Malibu’s over the years and got over 100,000 miles on one of them before I traded it in. GM wants to build giant SUV’s, pick up trucks and also EV’s which nobody wants. But they redesign the Acadia, Traverse and Enclave and equip it with a 4 cylinder without an option to upgrade to a 6 cylinder! Sales will continue to go down as they have for decades, but profits stay high due to selling $100,000 Escalades and building millions of vehicles in Mexico and paying poverty wages so they can ship back to USA to sell. When will we say no more and stop buying cars made with poverty wages? No discounts are provided when a car or truck is assembled by workers at $6 per hour! Shameful company who does what they want and never called to be accountable!

    1. Turbo 4 > NA V6. Do people not do any research or pay attention before speaking? The Turbo 4 is overbuilt and will outlast the V6 and makes a ton more power, especially where it is needed with torque downlow, and it gets better MPG. Why would I want to downgrade to a V6 just to say I have a V6 to other soccer moms that don’t know or care what motor is in their car? Does it move well? Yes! Does it get good MPG? Yes! Is it reliable with all the features I want at a good price and drive well? Yes! Then I don’t give a woot what motor is in it says every soccer mom in america with one in it.

  11. I looked just to see the comments and as expected, all miss the elephant in the room. Sales for the segment continued down(-15%). There is a reason everyone is getting out of cars, the trajectory is clear, down. And I say that as someone who prefers coupe’s, which are all but extinct. The twenty people on this site may buy one, but the millions don’t, and no one makes mass market anything for 20 people. Downvote away. Hence, I’m not waiting for a slew of new coupe’s to enter the market.

    1. Well, not sure about your area, but I never see Malibus on the lots at the dealerships here. Only the CUVs. Most people are gonna buy straight off the lot. If there’s none available how they gonna buy it? That and all the adverts are on the CUVs

    1. More like GM did not prioritize marketing for that Malibu variant. People didn’t even know it existed. When it came to fuel efficiency it was quite competitive with very good FE stats, but its price point was above average.

  18. Chevrolet would be smart to continue manufacturing the Malibu. It’s a great automobile (I have one) and like it very much. Just offer rebates; this is always a way to get customers in the showroom.

You get customers in the dealership and they’ll look at everything that Chevy has to offer along with the Malibu.

Lastly, they should advertise the Malibu. I can’t remember when I last saw a commercial for this great car.

  20. Wow I didn’t realize Malibu sale came this close to the Accord
Well that justifies how idiot GM managements are to decide to kill off Malibu
If they’re willing to just refresh and market Malibu a little bit, there may even be a chance to surpass Accord

I have a 2022 Malibu LS for almost a little bit over a year. It’s a fantastic car. Handles great. Drives smooth. Very quiet interior (Many of my friends who rode my car were impressed too). Also very gas efficient (Easily get 40 mpg on highway driving, almost comparable to Japanese compacts, such as the newer Corolla I’ve driven before on rental).

1.5T Power admittedly is not the best, but it does it job, enough to handle every road condition (Certainly not as “underpowered” as some people say, but of course a bit more power would be better, but hey Malibu is not meant to be a Dodge Charger, and again it’s adequate to do it’s job). I wish they didn’t kill off that 2.0T option though. Could have made Malibu more competitive.

Of course Malibu is a such pretty beauty. My beautiful “girlfriend” Malibu

Overall have fantastic driving dynamics, (Driven a few other comparable models, only Ford Fusion could came close)

I hope the new Malibu will become a reality, but before it arrives, maybe they should just keep the current one going (Which is already a fantastic car, despite it’s almost a decade old), better than killing Malibu brand completely.

Also IMHO, a “everyman brand” like Chevrolet should have at least 1 affordable sedan in their portfolio
