Chevy Malibu Sales Place Third In Segment, Outpacing Nissan Altima, Kia K5 In Q2 2023

Chevy Malibu sales increased in the United States and Canada but decreased in South Korea during the second quarter of 2023.

In the United States, Chevrolet Malibu deliveries totaled 40,731 units in Q2 2023, an increase of about 25 percent compared to 32,487 units sold in Q2 2022.

In the first six months of the year, Malibu sales increased about 34 percent to 78,169 units.

Chevrolet Malibu Sales - Q2 2023 - Canada

In Canada, Chevrolet Malibu deliveries totaled 1,589 units in Q2 2023, an increase of about 40 percent compared to 1,134 units sold in Q2 2022.

In the first six months of the year, Malibu sales increased about 49 percent to 2,983 units.

Chevrolet Malibu Sales - Q2 2023 - South Korea

In South Korea, Chevrolet Malibu deliveries totaled 1 units in Q2 2023, a decrease of about 100 percent compared to 328 units sold in Q2 2022.

In the first six months of the year, Malibu sales decreased about 91 percent to 80 units.

This is Chevy Malibu, the only sedan currently on sale by the Bow Tie brand. A next-gen model is planned for 2025.

Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Chevy Malibu sales put the Bow Tie brand’s only remaining sedan in third place in its segment when ranked by sales volume during the second quarter of 2023. The Toyota Camry remained at the top as the perennial leader since we started tracking sales for the midsize mainstream sedan segment, posting a 14 percent increase in sales to 84,705 units year-over-year, while the Honda Accord followed in second with a 49 percent jump to 57,039 units. The Malibu (see running Chevy Malibu sales) placed third with a 25 percent bump to 40,731 units. The Nissan Altima took fourth with a 25 percent slide to 30,409 units, while the Kia K5 followed in fifth with a five percent dip to 16,609 units. The Hyundai Sonata took sixth place with an eight percent swell to 12,844 units, and the Subaru Legacy finished out the list in seventh with a 26 percent bump to 6,899 units. Interestingly enough, the discontinued Chrysler 200 actually registered a sale this quarter, presumably thanks to an aged inventory model sitting on some dealer’s backlot.

From a segment share standpoint, the Malibu earned a 16 percent share, up one percentage point year-over-year. The Camry maintained a 34 percent segment share, while the Accord posted a 23 percent share, up a segment-best six percentage points. Alternatively, the Altima held a 12 percent share, down a segment-worst six percentage points. The K5 posted a seven percent share, down one percentage point, while the Sonata maintained a five percent share. Finally, the Legacy posted a three percent share, up one percentage point.

It’s worth noting that the two entries fielded by Hyundai and Kia – the Sonata and K5, respectively – accounted for a cumulative 29,453 deliveries, good for a combined 12 percent segment share but not enough to edge out Nissan.

The midsize mainstream sedan segment grew 13 percent to 249,237 units during Q2 2023, meaning Malibu sales outperformed the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

The Bow Tie brand’s only remaining sedan continued a positive sales trend that began early last year, with the dated model holding its own against newer perpetual solid sellers – namely the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, and sometimes the Nissan Altima, which the Chevy has continued to outsell since Q4 2022.

Besides being an older model that’s potentially not as competitive as newer entries, limited inventory may have also restrained sales, since Malibu supply across the U.S. dropped to just 17 days in June. A 60-day supply is considered optimal in the U.S. auto industry by many automotive sales organizations such as the National Automotive Dealers Association (NADA). For reference, a 60-day inventory level means that dealerships have enough inventory on hand to sustain current sales volume for roughly the next 60 days.

Regardless, the Malibu’s sustained levels of high sales performance confirm that U.S. buyers hold the Bow Tie brand’s remaining sedan in high regard in spite of it being dated. Could the upcoming next-gen model actually boost sales enough to overtake Honda?

The 2023 Chevy Malibu ushers in a variety of important changes and updates compared to the 2022 Chevy Malibu. The 2023 model discontinues the Premier trim level, repackaging the Premier trim as part of a new 2LT trim level, while also dropping the turbocharged 2.0L I4 LTG gasoline engine and GM 9-speed automatic transmission that powered the Premier model. As such, the 2023 Malibu is available exclusively with the turbocharged 1.5L I4 LFV gasoline engine, which mates to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).

The 2024 Chevy Malibu, meanwhile, arrives as the ninth model year for the ninth-generation nameplate with just a handful of changes and updates over the 2023 model year. Pricing uncovered for the 2024 Malibu shows the base LS being the sole trim level to get a bump in price, and only $100 at that.

The good news is that GM is working on a next-gen Chevy Malibu, and it should appear some time around the 2025 or 2026 model years.

    1. Wow – I didn’t realize it’s been 13 years for this generation. That is like 2 or 3 life times in the auto industry. The design has held up well given the 13 years – it still looks modern. The new model can not get here soon enough.

      It’s great to see GM committed to a next gen ditching the car would turn buyers over to Toyota/Honda. Ford made a mistake pulling out of the segment.

      1. The current gen Malibu started production around Oct 2015. So it’s 9 years old. But the chassis dates back to the 8th gen Malibu, which started production 11 years ago.

        Wow the time moves fast.

        I still consider 8th gen Malibus and 2010-2015 model year cars as fairly new, but that’s not reality. Most of them are showing their age and have 100,000+ miles.

        I felt like the 2016 Malibu was an excellent design at the time and what the 2013 model should have been from the start. The design still looks good with the minor updates they’ve made.

        Most of the older 8th gen models just didn’t age very well. They looked clunky from the factory and they had the first iteration of GM’s stop/start system – which was undefeatable and rough. Huge duds.

        1. Put the transmission in L and tap up to 6th…stop start defeated. Done. It drives just like it would in D except no stop start and you can use the manual downshift if needed.

  2. Makes me want to cheer it on. I would say, very good performance from a car that gets no love from its manufacturer. Camaro is in the same boat. Shows that despite gm’s efforts to erase its own history, people are still interested in owning a piece of it.

  3. I read one report that said 2024 is the last year for the Altima, leaving more market share for Chevy. Just like 2024 being the last year of the Camaro, giving away the market share to the Mustang.

      1. They just announced that the Altima is also going away. It’s going to be replaced by electric car that will be built on their production line in Mississippi.

        Oddly enough the Ariya EV is not selling very well despite being an okay vehicle. Nissan may be making a mistake canceling a popular, affordable ICE vehicle for what will be an expensive EV. Doesn’t look like their Leaf experience is translating to the popularity of larger EV’s.

  6. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a version of the 2.5T in the new Malibu, which may end of being the next version of the Nascar design. They could make a malibu with close to 300 hp would give the ugly camry and run for its sales.

    1. The Impala was a nice, solid car. A big step up from the Malibu, but in 2023, young buyers settle more often. Passion surrounding automobiles is generally lower with this younger generation. GM needs to make a more powerful sport model and loaded model to be the flagship Malibu even if the cheaper, less expensive, less powerful, less featured versions sell more. Those models boost the image of the entire line. Not many GM cars left, even less American brand cars. Chevrolet, try to keep the last sedan relevant.

  7. Can’t imagine someone buying a 9 year old car that is fun to drive, sporty looking, fuel efficient affordable, reliable and roomy instead of a bigger more expensive suv.
    I would have bought my 4th one since 2008 if it still offered the 2.0 liter,

    1. mark: The rental companies buy anything they can. Drive past the lots around where I work/live and the rental lots are full of Nissan’s, Toyota’s, Kia and Hyundai. Most of the lots are full of the SUV/CUV’s that everyone says they want.

  9. Well well well, the race isn’t for the swift but the one who endures. The good old Malibu has surely endured, it was never going to take the top spot with this current model even if it still had the 2.0L turbo and was well advertised. But a solid third place in this very tight and competitive midsize sedan segment as a Chevrolet brand only GM car on this platform is decent. I hope to see a worthy world class replacement in the near future

  10. The Malibu is a secretly good vehicle. It ride and handles well, drives quietly, and it’s easy to get 40mpg on steady flat highway with one.

    Not a fan of the CVT, and the new Accord definitely made the Malibu feel old. But it’s definitely a better option than the Altima. I think it’s better than the Camry in many ways although the Camry sells on having bulletproof reliability. The Accord is the best in class IMO – but despite that, Accord sales are down from a 10 and 20 years ago. It’s becoming harder to justify the expense in keeping these sedans current.

    I thought the Malibu would be one of the new cars that would share a platform with Honda. GM and Honda have a JV for EVs and a few ICE’s. I don’t know which ICE that would make more sense for than Accord/Malibu.

  11. Nice. This has better sales than most of the SUV’s in the Chevy line and basically sells about the same as all Buick’s.

    Now imagine what those numbers could look like if they advertised it and promoted it in any way. I see Chevy commercials all the time and NEVER do they have the Malibu or Camaro in the ads.

  13. imo heres some things that can make the next gen malibu actually interesting to customers:

    the 237hp engine in the xt4 as a base engine
    the 2.5L as an upgrade
    standard black roof on all models w/ a FUNCTIONAL panoramic sun roof
    awd optional
    new 8spd or the 10 spd

    1. camaro kyle: I must respectfully disagree, not that it matter. My question to you would be this: Will people buy a base Malibu at $32,000 and the top line at $40,000? That’s what you would end up with by doing what you suggest.

      Here’s what makes the current Malibu a great car: Value to features. The engine, although not a performance car, does exactly what it should while getting really good MPG. The trans (for a CVT) is actually quite nice. Even if you price out a 2024 2LT and click a couple of extra’s, the price tops at around $34,000 (no sunroof) and just over 35 grand with the sunroof. Although over my price cap, that’s a nice car for 34 grand having heated wheel, heated/cooled seats, leather, nice rims and tons of features. When you get a starting price over 30 grand and topping at 40 grand, you get into a lot of other vehicles and that value disappears.

  16. Anybody know why you cannot order a 2LT with both the Driver Confidence and Cruise Package – RPO code WPN and the Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert package – RPO code UKC ?? I have been trying since June and my dealer keeps telling me that they cannot order a Malibu with these two options combined on the order form. It keeps rejecting the order. Supposedly they have contacted the dealer help desk and have not gotten an answer.
