Chevy Malibu Sales Place Third In Segment To Outpace Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, Subaru During Q1 2024

Chevy Malibu sales decreased in the United States and Canada during the first quarter of 2024, and there were no deliveries in South Korea.

In the United States, Chevrolet Malibu deliveries totaled 32,749 units in Q1 2024, a decrease of about 13 percent compared to 37,438 units sold in Q1 2023.

Chevrolet Malibu Sales - Q1 2024 - Canada

In Canada, Chevrolet Malibu deliveries totaled 1,166 units in Q1 2024, a decrease of about 16 percent compared to 1,394 units sold in Q1 2023.

During Q1 2024, sales of the Chevy Malibu, the only sedan currently on sale by the Bow Tie brand, placed third among seven entries. A next-generation model is planned for the 2026 or 2027 model year.

Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Chevy Malibu sales during Q1 2024 had the Bow Tie brand’s only remaining sedan move up a spot from the previous quarter to third place among seven models when ranked by sales volume.

The Toyota Camry remained at the top among mainstream midsize sedans, with a 19 percent bump to 78,336 units. It was the only model here to post a sales gain. The Honda Accord followed again in second with a two percent slip for 41,927 deliveries and a whopping 36K units behind Toyota. The Malibu (see running Chevy Malibu sales) moved back up to third place with a 13 percent slide to 32,749 units, while the Nissan Altima traded places for fourth with a similar 13 percent downturn for 28,583 deliveries. The Hyundai Sonata took fifth with a nine percent decrease to 13,164 units, and the Kia K5, its corporate sibling, placed sixth with a 53 percent drop to 6,753 units. The Subaru Legacy finished last with a 13 percent decrease to 4,398 units.

The Malibu earned a 16 percent market share in its segment, down two percentage points year-over-year. The Camry posted a 38 percent share, up a segment-best seven percentage points to claim nearly two-fifths of all sales in this space, and the Accord maintained a 20 percent segment share. The Altima held a 14 percent share, down one percentage point, while the Sonata posted a six percent share, down one percentage point, and the K5 earned a three percent share, down four percentage points. Finally, the Legacy maintained a two percent share.

Notably, Hyundai Motor Group’s two entries, the Hyundai Sonata and Kia K5, accounted for a combined 19,917 deliveries and a cumulative nine percent segment share but still placed the automaker fifth overall.

The midsize mainstream sedan segment slipped three percent to 205,910 units during Q1 2024, meaning Chevy Malibu sales underperformed the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

Chevy Malibu sales during the first quarter of 2024 were down like the rest of the mainstream midsize sedans, save for the segment-leading Toyota Camry. Performance of the Bow Tie brand’s only remaining sedan could have been impacted by limited inventory supply and availability at dealers due to 2023 GM-UAW labor negotiations that prompted GM to idle Chevy Malibu and Cadillac XT4 production this past September. GM and the UAW reached a tentative contract agreement at the end of October.

Additionally, competitors have stepped up their game, introducing refreshed and next-generation models to take on the dated Chevy Malibu, which has been around since the 2015 model year. GM began planning the next-generation Malibu back in late 2022.

The latest casualty of the dying sedan market is the Subaru Legacy, which will be discontinued after the 2025 model year. The automaker’s longest-running model line was just refreshed for 2023.

Production of the 2024 Chevy Malibu is currently scheduled to end on May 30th, with production of the 2025 Malibu set to start on May 31st at the GM Fairfax plant in Kansas City. GM will end Malibu production this year to make way for production of the next-generation all-electric Chevy Bolt EV. An all-new Malibu is still expected to launch for the 2026 or 2027 model year.

  1. Sadly, it’s sales are just being supported by rental agencies. Even if it weren’t neglected without an update for so long, sedan sales are just in the toilet. Camry sales are half what they were a decade ago and it’s the go-to sedan.

    1. Really? GM is in a much better financial position than the other American auto makers. They make decisions based on current and future trends, sedans aren’t a future trend and have been falling significantly the past two decades. Why spend money now on something it doesn’t share a platform with that may sell 130k at this point and falls to 50k in a few years? That doesn’t make business sense, which is why she is where she is and you are where you are; Friday morning quarterbacks over here…

  7. If this was 1995 then sure come up with a new sedan that will out sell every one else…but when a Crossover out sells the sedan it’s time to say good bye. Even the RAV4 out sells the Camry and Hyundai and Kia the value leadrs can hardly move sedans anymore. I would much rather see a new Chevy bolt come out then time and effort wasted on a sedan that won’t sell very well.

    1. Ah, sorry GMGUY. The Malibu outsells (or has been outselling) every “Crossover” or “SUV” GM sells outside of the Equinox. And imagine if GM actually cared about the Malibu. Imagine if they actually promoted it. I don’t think it would take much for it to actually outsell the Equinox or be close to it’s numbers.

      1. cim88se86 aka Dan B…the only people buying Malibus are rental fleets and people who are amazed that go such a good deal on a car that hasn’t seen a redesign since 2017. Come back out with Caprice a full size car with a turbo V6 or hybrid then we can talk real cars ! I would rather have my equinox thank you

  8. imagine how much better it would sell with an update, better dash, larger screen, and seats, still a good seller,yes sedan market is lower but still this is one of GMs top seller and many EVs are stuggling to be excepted

  9. Two things: Lack of inventory at the beginning of the year due to the strike and it took them time to build inventory back up. Second is the lack of any promotion. Zero advertising that I’ve seen. When GM just doesn’t care and they are trying to let this and the two Cadillac’s (CT4/5) just die, what would you expect? I can’t turn on the TV without seeing 10+ Toyota ads and nearly every single one shows a Camry.

    It’s truly sad to see how both GM and Ford have sabotaged their own sedan sales.

  11. Are SUV sales based on everything being an SUV so trendy consumers think there is no other choice but to run with the herd ? Now is not the time to discontinue the malibu !

    1. Scott: The marketing is so bias towards SUV/CUV’s that if you go to Chevy’s site now, they list the Bolt EV (not EUV) under the SUV list. They have buyers so brain washed that they don’t even know a sedan exists. And of course, sales people are so lazy that they will walk buyers to the easiest thing to show and sell. The fact that they (GM, Ford, Toyota, etc) can charge these same buyers 2 to 3 grand MORE for a “crossover” rather than the sedan that is similar only shows how addicted people have become.

      I can just hope and pray that the newer generation of buyers send a clear signal that they don’t want SUV/CUV’s. If for no other reason than they just don’t want to drive what their parents/grandparents have been driving. That happened to the 2 door cars, then mini-vans. So I hope it happens to SUV’s. And if/when it does, I hope GM and Ford are sitting on nothing but SUV/CUV’s and they lose market share once again to the brands that commited to cars in their lineup.

  12. I bought a 2016 Malibu 2.0T new and it has been a great car. Better than the Hyundai Sonatas I had before it. GM in every aspect has been better than Hyundai. Better dealer, Better service, Better Finance company, and hard to believe but a more reliable car. Warranties mean nothing if you don’t stand behind it. I would buy a new Malibu but I want more than a 1.5T. It hardly snows where I am anymore and I don’t really need AWD. If I do I have a Terrain at my disposal. Zero interest in an EV at this point. Keep the Malibu but bigger engine options with an SS option

Ever since I went to trade in my 2017 for a 2020, the security features have lessened on the Malibu, which are really an important feature for seniors, but for everyone, safety should always be primary on any vehicle. Stop decreasing important features. However, I’m not one of those people who are fond of any SUVs, any crossover, and especially not into electric vehicles. Think about this, if I am paying more for electricity in my home vs Gas, why would I want an electric vehicle that essentially is the equivalent? I would rather be in a sedan as opposed to sitting up on top of the world, it’s like looking down at other people. Keep the Malibu please, I’m actually looking to buy another Malibu prior to GM disbanding it altogether. When I proceeded to turn in my 2020 for a 2023, the inventory was very low, no matter what dealership I went to. I was willing to take something that was actually in-stock, unfortunately, the pickings were almost non-existent, and the increase in pricing was so outrageous, that I did something that I did not want to do, I bought out my 2020 lease. However I would love to get the latest Malibu (whether it’s a 2024 model or the 2025 model), before they stop making the Malibu altogether. Somebody please wake up. Perhaps you should ask senior citizens their opinion, especially where safety is concerned, you did wondrous things with the 2017 Malibu and then you started dropping the ball, so sad. Until I leased my 2017 Chevrolet Malibu, I was driving mainly foreign vehicles, but the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu turned me back into an American vehicle person, and my dad (God rest his soul) was always a Chevrolet owner, as a matter of fact, my dad purchased me a 1986 Chevy Malibu Classic, and that car literally saved my life while I was living in the State of Washington, were I was struck by a pick-up truck driver. Unfortunately, no one makes vehicles like they used to. That’s my two-cents. Thank you for allowing me to comment, which I have actually been trying to do since I leased my 2020 and tried to voice my dissatisfaction. I am 73yrs young and I still enjoy driving, however, I do not like being forced into something just there are those running the shots that think they’re the only ones who know what best for everyone else. Example, everything new does not equate to better. The more technology evolves, the worse a great deal of products fail (in my opinion), analog was clearer and better than digital, over-the-air TV, in some respects were better than cable, landlines are much clearer without calls being dropped, nourishment from the Earth will always be better than man-made (to much poison in our foods, I could go on and on and on, but what’s the point – I am not the person in charge. Go out and about and speak to your existing vehicle holders and ask their opinions. Who are you selling to, think about the different age groups. Again, thank you for your time and consideration of this matter.
