GM has decided to lay off 1,314 workers indefinitely at two of its Michigan assembly plants, though it says that most of the laid-off employees will likely find work elsewhere in the company and will receive offers for such job openings.
The laid-off employees are all unionized and therefore have “bumping rights” allowing them to take over positions occupied by less senior workers, Automotive News reports.
The layoffs are in addition to those announced in an earlier round of job cuts back in October and take place at two facilities. Most of the layoffs will occur at the GM Lake Orion Assembly plant in the eponymous Michigan township, where 945 workers will be laid off starting on January 15th, 2024. The remaining 369 layoffs will take place at the Lansing Grand River plant between January 1st and late March.
All of the employees involved are represented by the UAW, which ratified a new four-year contract with The General last month following the Stand Up Strike that cost the automaker about $1.1 billion. The workers at Lake Orion are members of UAW Local 5960 or UAW International, while those at Lansing Grand River belong to UAW Local 652.
The Lake Orion layoffs are related to the end of Chevy Bolt EV and Chevy Bolt EUV production at the site. The production lines will be retooled to produce Chevy Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV trucks, but The General has now delayed completion of the retooling until 2025 in response to lower than anticipated demand for electric pickups.
Meanwhile, the job cuts at Lansing Grand River concern the end of production of the iconic Chevy Camaro muscle car. Cadillac CT4 and Cadillac CT5 sedans will continue to roll off the assembly line at Grand River, at least for the time being.
Spokeswoman Tara Kuhnen said that “employees at Orion Assembly will be offered other opportunities in Michigan, including positions at Factory Zero in Detroit-Hamtramck.” Meanwhile, for Lansing Grand River employees, “GM anticipates having job opportunities for all impacted team members,” Kuhnen added.
Automotive News notes that Stellantis is planning even more sweeping layoffs starting in February, with up to 3,500 jobs potentially on the chopping block.

Hybrid trucks folks. 25mpg combined, more power, more torque, more range, decent control through regen, powerful inverters, lower cost.
Silverado 1500 Diesel 4×4, 24 MPG combined today.
Diesel is currently about 30%+ more expensive than regular 87. Needs DEF. Mass burns diesel for regen. Expensive repairs and emissions system. I loved that engine when diesel was similarly priced, or cheaper, than 87, but that has changed. It is also comparatively priced to Ford’s F150 hybrid but with much less power and torque. GM needs a proper hyrbid truck… And I would be willing to bet we see one with the next generation in 2025/26
CEO Mary apparently doesn’t see the hand writing on the wall. Most people don’t want ev anything and yet she presses forward and employees are losing their jobs.Next is mopar then Ford who are losing billions on these ev’s.Just give us our ice and diesels and we all will be happy!!!😃
She does. She said they are adapting their EV endeavors to meet market demand – it mentions this in the article above. And also likely why they did a stock buy back to line the pockets of major investors to get them on her side when she announces losses and pivot to hybrid that they claimed they were skipping. 5-8 years of Ultium ramp up for naught.
Mark Reuss should have been promoted instead of her. He would’ve had a compact truck here before the Ford Maverick. And would have pushed hard into the hybrid space. These were things he was pushing when it seemed like he was going to get the top spot.
EVs serve a purpose, just not at the rate everyone is/was pushing. And for smaller vehicles.
EV trucks are the most useless with current technology. Need some serious battery advancement and charging infrastructure improvements – not just charging speeds but actual charger layout to accommodate larger vehicles and with trailers on
Hopefully they are coming up with a backup vehicle plan for Orion. I do not forsee gm selling two assembly plant’s worth of EV trucks anytime soon.
So Camaro sales (model ignored by gm for years) couldn’t make enough profits to save 369 jobs? Ford announced Mustang to be sold through 2028. GM makes the same mistake twice in dropping Camaro again.
Davy. Camaro has died, long time coming.
It became bloated & had eternal heartburn.
May it rest in peace with Peto-Bismol!
what happens to those who get bumped out for being low on totem pole? Do they get job offers elsewhere also?
Yup Arlington-3x Cost of Living,48 hour drive and 10 days to get there. And get to work. Offers gonout Christmas morning.
Go on strike. Get big bucks and bennies. Lose jobs. Karma.
The staff there knew they would be laid off when they announced the end of Bolt/Camaro production in the beginning of the year…nothing to do with the strike
This exactly what I predicted after they signed their big contract.

Good bye Bolt. At least GM sold this car between 2017-2023 (7 years).
180,000 Bolt EV and
63,000 Bolt EUV were sold worldwide which is not any better than Volt.
As of now, there are 4,000 Bolt EV&EUV on sale in USA. It will take at least next 12 months to sell every unit with some of them even selling in 2025.
Build the Trax at Orion, in addition to Changwon.
Check the back comments of mine. I predicted this and a lot said I was wrong. UPS is laying off too after they got a new contract. Greedy unions sold you down the river.
my 2023 Diesel 30.9 mpg from Napa,ca to Palm Springs. when I filled it up it said 595 miles to a tank. Diesel is cleaner then Gas. Gas in cars and trucks is not good for the air we breath. Oh , I have had a Deposit $75.00 for a Chevrolet electric over a year and no phone calls or e-mails when I will get it? So , Is it BS that they are not in demand or what. another thing the
CEO Of GM is a STAR in my eyes.36 years with GM and # 2 in sales for 1996 & 1997 I thing I know what the Hell I’m talking about. Merry Christmas everyone Hope your Holidays are going Amazing like Mine.
Boils down to 1314 jobs are gone wether you bump someone else, he loose his job who with less seniority probably needed the job worse than the guy who bumped him but don’t worry I’ll bet Shawn will have your back
