The GM Authority Take
Chevrolet Brazil sales posted yet another decline in March, becoming the 12th consecutive month of decreases for the the Bow Tie brand in the Brazilian market. The performance further deepens Chevrolet‘s negative performance in Brazil, once again falling to third place among the best-selling auto brands in the South American country, after Fiat and Volkswagen, which have led the local sales charts for the second month in a row.
The primary reason for Chevy’s poor commercial performance during the first quarter of the year in Brazil is the idling of local production of the Chevrolet Onix, which has accumulated more than five years as the best-selling vehicle in the country and throughout Latin America. Last month, GM Authority reported that General Motors has halted production of the Onix until June due to a lack of components needed to manufacture it, itself caused by the ongoing semiconductor shortage that’s been impacting industries globally.
By contrast, the new Chevrolet Tracker again posted a large triple-digit increase to 6,410 units sold, becoming Brazil’s best-selling utility in March. The subcompact crossover continues to be in high demand in the Brazilian market. It recently received several updates for the 2022 model year.
Similarly, the TrailBlazer SUV once again accompanied it as the only two Chevy models that managed to post year-over-year increases in sales volume.
