Competitive Sales Comparison
Chevrolet Trax sales skyrocketed during the third quarter, with the small Chevy CUV becoming the best-selling vehicle in its class. The results follow a very healthy first quarter of 2019, but a very depressed Q2 2019. The Trax’s Q3 performance enables it to outsell the Jeep Compass (see Jeep Compass sales), which is typically the sales leader in this space, as well as the Honda HR-V and the Chevy Trax’s corporate cousin—the Buick Encore (see Buick Encore sales).
In addition, the Trax outsold the Jeep Renegade (see Jeep Renegade sales), Hyundai Kona, new Nissan Kicks, Ford EcoSport (see Ford EcoSport sales), Toyota C-HR, Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, Kia Niro, Mazda CX-3 (see Mazda CX-3 sales), Fiat 500X (see Fiat 500X sales), and discontinued Nissan Juke.

On a share basis, the Trax owned the segment with 16 percent, the Jeep Compass was close behind with 15 percent, and the Honda HR-V and Buick Encore each had 11 percent. All other contenders had less than 10 percent share during the quarter.
GM’s cross-town rival, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, fields three offerings in this segment—the Jeep Compass, Jeep Renegade and Fiat 500X. The trio accounted for a very impressive 56,984 deliveries during the quarter. Meanwhile, the two GM offerings – the Chevrolet Trax and Buick Encore – accounted for a cumulative 62,415 deliveries. As such, GM outsold FCA by 5,431 units during the period, a first for The General since FCA launched the second-generation Jeep Compass. GM held a 27.5 percent segment share to FCA’s 25 percent.
It’s also worth noting that the Trax saw a larger sales increase than all other models in the segment with the exception of the new Nissan Kicks. The mainstream subcompact crossover segment expanded 9.24 percent to 211,037 units during Q3 2019, with the Trax significantly outpacing that average growth rate.
The GM Authority Take
We imagine that Trax sales skyrocketed during Q3 2019 as a result of the following factors:
- An increase in incentives on the vehicle, which were as follows:
- $4,250 off in July 2019
- $4,250 off in August 2019
- $3,500 off in September 2019
- An increase in fleet sales
The increase is definitely a surprise, since the model is the oldest in its segment and is therefore at a disadvantage against newer and more modern offerings. As such, it was typically difficult for the current Trax to compete favorably against more modern segment rivals, including the Nissan Kicks, Jeep Compass, Honda HR-V, Toyota C-HR, Kia Niro and Hyundai Kona.
To that end, Chevy recently revealed the completely overhauled (redesigned and reengineered) Chevrolet Trailblazer, which will be coming to North America. The vehicle will not replace the Trax, but will instead continue being sold alongside it. Hence, Chevrolet will field two entries in the subcompact crossover segment.
Once the all-new Trailblazer completes its rollout, we expect Chevrolet to sell even more combined units of both models and strengthen its position in this space. The strategy will be mirrored by Buick, which will continue selling the first-gen Encore while introducing its version of the Trailblazer called the Encore GX. This should result in GM controlling an even higher percentage of the mainstream subcompact crossover space than it currently does today.

About Chevrolet Trax
The Chevrolet Trax is a subcompact crossover utility vehicle. It slots below the Equinox as Chevrolet's smallest CUV and rides on the GM Gamma 2 platform shared with the Chevrolet Sonic/Aveo and Buick Encore. The model was Chevrolet's first offering in the subcompact (B segment) crossover space and the second (after the Nissan Juke) to launch in its segment in the U.S. market.
Having launched for the 2015 model year in the U.S., the Trax received a refresh for the 2017 model year that consisted of all-new front and rear fascias, the replacement of the LTZ trim by the new range-topping Premier model, revised interior, a new infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and more.
The 2018 Chevy Trax represents the fourth model year of the first-generation Trax and receives several changes including three new exterior colors, a new Trax Redline Edition model, and several equipment-level changes. The 2019 Trax got three new exterior colors and a new Premier badge on the tailgate. The 2020 model is expected to be the last model year of the current, first-generation Trax before an all-new, second-generation model arrives.
The Trax, which is called the Chevrolet Tracker in some markets like South America, Russia and the CIS, is built at the following GM plants:
- GM Bupyeong factory in Bupyeong-Gu, South Korea operated by GM Korea - supplies Eurasia, North America and Holden Trax to Australia/New Zealand
- GM San Luis Potosi factory in San Luis, Mexico operated by GM Mexico - supplies North America
- GM Dongyue South in Yantai, Shandong, China operated by GM China and SAIC - supplies China

Need a little proof reading here guys! ?
With the Cruze not available.. is it that surprising? They prolly dumping these to replace Cruze fleet and discounted sales. At least these are not built in the US like the Cruze … *eyeroll*
Wish we could get Chinese Encore. It is beautiful.
I am looking forward to the new Trailblazer and the 3 cylinder motors. That being said, in 4 years I will be in the market for a turbo charged motor making north of 220 horsepower, not something making south of 160 hp.
Purchased a Chevy trax 18 months ago. I cant complain about everything regarding the vehicle. No problems other than the ac system, which is common to various forums , and has been an issue with this vehicle since 2015. My problem is the after sales service. My vehicle has been down for almost 6 weeks at the dealer for the lack of having a compressor in stock. At least that’s what they are telling me…… btw I am still paying for that vehicle. My concern is if this has been a common complaint why isnt GM ensuring that dealers hold a min qty of replacement parts. Moreso this complaint is littered all over the forums and its speaks to a design flaw that maybe GM needs to correct. You are boasting of increase in sales. I do hope those customers do not suffer the inconveniences I have
