Cadillac Outsold Acura By 5K Units During Q2 2024

Over the past two decades, Honda’s luxury division, Acura, has become a rival to Cadillac in some segments of the luxury automobile market, so we’re now comparing sales of the foreign luxury marque to the domestic one. Both compete in a handful of segments, including the ever-growing all-electric vehicle space. Let’s see how they fare against one another by looking at raw Cadillac vs. Acura sales figures for the second quarter of 2024.

Cadillac sales outsold Acura by 4,813 units during Q2 2024 in the U.S. Shown here is the Cadillac Escalade-V.

Total Cadillac sales in the U.S. market during Q2 2024 were down one percent to 38,455 units, while Acura sales fell 16 percent to 33,642 deliveries. In other words, Cadillac outsold Acura by roughly 5K units.

The Escalade full-size SUV led Cadillac in sales moving 10,069 units, accounting for over a quarter of overall sales. We’ve noted elsewhere that this phenomenon is unique to Cadillac, as the marque’s flagship vehicle is also its most popular. This quarter, sales of the regular-length Escalade and extended-length Escalade ESV are reported on the same line item. For Acura, the MDX was the best-seller with 14,553 deliveries.

Utilities

Utilities, comprised of unibody crossovers and body-on-frame SUVs, have largely displaced traditional cars like sedans. Here, Cadillac outpaced Acura by 8K deliveries during Q2 2024, with GM’s luxury marque having the advantage by virtue of having a broader product portfolio.

EVs

In the budding EV arena, Cadillac far outsold Acura during Q2 2024. Each luxury marque sells just one all-electric model, though Cadillac will soon launch a few more.

Absent here are plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV), representing a bridge between ICE and EV powertrains. Sales of those are not broken out, but are instead included in their respective sections above. While GM doesn’t currently sell any PHEVs, the automaker says that they will arrive in 2027.

The Cadillac Lyriq accounted for 7,294 units, putting forth its best quarterly performance yet.

The Acura ZDX posted just 338 deliveries. Ironically, Acura’s first all-electric utility is built by GM at the GM Spring Hill plant and is underpinned by GM electric vehicle technology, including GM Ultium Drive motors and a GM Ultium battery pack, developed to compete against the Lyriq.

The GM Authority Take

Overall, Cadillac outsold Acura by 4,813 units during the second quarter of 2024.

The only space that Acura sold more cars in than Cadillac was passenger cars, despite both marques offerings just two entires each. Something tells us that once the refreshed CT5 has reached dealers en masse, the volume game will turn in Cadillac’s favor.

    1. You would hate it every time the ICE started. My Lyriq gets a lot of looks and comments.
