GM has issued a Service Update related to a fix for an issue with the battery energy control module in certain affected units of the 2022-2024 GMC Hummer EV.
Tagged with service update number N232429880, some 2022 to 2023 GMC Hummer EV vehicles, 2024 GMC Hummer EV Pickup trucks, and 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV units may have a condition in which a software defect causes a diagnostic trouble code to set. Qualified GM technicians at dealerships can remedy this problem by reprogramming the battery energy control module and drive motor control module.
The number of units affected is unclear at this point. The fix is offered until the end of the Hummer EV’s new vehicle limited warranty period. Notably, some BrightDrop Zevo 600 vans and Cadillac Lyriq crossovers are involved in the service bulletin.
As a reminder, both models utilize Ultium battery and Ultium Drive motor technologies to provide motivation to all four wheels of the vehicle. Depending on trim level and options, a Hummer EV may feature either a 20-module or 24-module battery pack, the latter available only on the Pickup, paired with with either a two-motor or three-motor setup.
For the GMC Hummer EV Pickup, power output amounts to 570 horsepower for the 2 and 2X trim levels. The 3X trim develops 830 horsepower if it is equipped with the 20-module battery, while cranking out 1,000 horsepower if the truck is optioned with the 24-module battery. With the 20-module battery as its only choice, the Hummer EV SUV is limited to 570 horsepower in the 2X trim level or 830 horsepower in the 3X and Edition 1 variants.
Towing for the Pickup is rated at 12,000 pounds for the 20-module battery, two-motor configuration, 8,500 pounds for the 20-module or 24-module, three-motor setup, and 7,500 pounds for any configuration equipped with the Extreme Off-Road Package (RPO code Z6X). SUV tow rating is 10,000 pounds with the two-motor configuration and 7,500 pounds with three motors and/or the Extreme Off-Road Package.
Both configurations of the GMC Hummer EV ride on the wide-body variant of the GM BT1 platform, with production taking place at the GM Factory Zero plant in Michigan.
