Will GM Make More LT4-Powered Cadillacs After ZL1 Discontinuation?

The supercharged 6.2L V8 LT4 gasoline engine is a true powerhouse, throwing down a ton of horsepower and a fat torque curve, all of which makes it a fantastic fit for a number of different performance applications. No surprise then that the LT4 has found its way under the hood of several go-fast GM products over the years, most recently with the Chevy Camaro ZL1, Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing, and Cadillac Escalade-V. However, with production of the sixth-generation Camaro ZL1 now officially over, we have to wonder – will GM make more LT4-powered Cadillacs?

The supercharged 6.2L V8 LT4 gasoline engine in the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing.

Here’s what we’re on about – even though GM is no longer producing new units of the sixth-gen Chevy Camaro ZL1, The General has no known plans to slow down production of the supercharged engine which it cradles. For reference, every LT4 engine is assembled by hand at GM’s Performance Build Center in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

So, if engine production remains consistent, logic would dictate that either GM will sell additional crate engines, or increase volume for its supercharged Cadillac models. After all, with the demise of the sixth-gen Camaro ZL1, the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing and Cadillac Escalade-V are now the only new GM models equipped with the LT4 from the factory.

The most likely scenario is that both of those things will happen – GM will sell additional crate engines, and increase volume for the supercharged Cadillac models. That said, LT4 production is primarily geared towards vehicles, and not crate engines, so with the discontinuation of the ZL1, it seems likely that engine production will primarily go towards increased volume for supercharged Cadillacs. By the way, there’s a reason GM doesn’t stuff the LT4 into full-size SUVs like the Chevy Suburban or pickups like the Chevy Silverado, as GM Authority covered previously.

For reference, the supercharged 6.2L V8 LT4 doles out 668 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 659 pound-feet of torque at 3,600 rpm when cradled by the CT5-V Blackwing, while under the hood of the Cadillac Escalade-V, it produces 682 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 653 pound-feet of torque at 4,400 rpm.

  1. As a GM fan, I sometimes I feel like a starving dog who’s been thrown a bone. This is one of those times.

    1. Yes. Mary says no fun for the boys. Have to go to another company for that. The little GM stuff that exists is so marked up that it makes the dealers rich.

More market share gone. Pretty soon they will look around and it’s either gone or the buyers have died off.

  2. Agreed ! Over the years, BUICK GN gone, OLDSMOBILE Cutlass 442 gone, PONTIAC Trans Am gone, Short box regular cab V8 gone, now Camaro gone again, 2 door Cadillac gone, at least we have an abundance of SUV’s and EV’s to choose from now 😡!

  3. Why ask us?
Shouldn’t you confirm plan(s) with GM and then report out??

  4. Mmmm, I thought GM Authority reported
That the last Lt4 was rolling off of the production line several months ago. Lt4 was a great engine for us. We had three of them and had no troubles. Good fuel mileage if you kept the foot easy on the go pedal.
I know I’m wrong a lot , but what is it ? The word of the writers are confusing.

  5. GM needs to stuff the LT4 into the Corvette.

  6. The LT4 is GM’s best. I love my CTS V3. Glad they are still building as a crate motor for the
muscle car builds. Now that GM is going “oh s—-t, EV’s are not selling well, better build hybrids”, maybe they’ll surprise us with an LT4 hybrid rocket in a reintroduced Camaro or CT5 V 🙏🏻. On an another note, how about a V6 twin turbo, hybrid Camaro? That would bridge the gap between ICE and EV and more green than a V8. Missing the Camaro 😞.
