We’re Driving The GMC Hummer EV Pickup – What Do You Want To Know

GM Authority is getting behind the wheel of the range-topping GMC Hummer EV Pickup Edition 1 for the next few days, giving us a chance to learn even more about the all-electric off-roader.

First dropping in for the 2022 model year, the GMC Hummer EV Pickup Edition 1 features a GM Ultium Drive three-motor powertrain producing 1,000 horsepower and 11,500 pound-feet of torque through the onboard e4WD system. Electrons are sourced from a 212-kWh GM Ultium battery pack.

Properly unleashed, the GMC Hummer EV Pickup Edition 1 can sprint to 60 mph in just 3 seconds. Stay off the skinny pedal and it will cover more than 350 miles between plugs. Air Ride Adaptive Suspension keeps the rig shiny side up. There’s also four-wheel steering, CrabWalk mode, and the Ultravision underbody camera system.

Like every GMC Hummer EV Pickup Edition 1, our tester is covered in Interstellar White paint, which is matched to a Jet Black / Light Grey interior colorway. A set of 18-inch Black aluminum wheels with Machined Accents ride in the corners, while LED headlamps and exterior lighting illuminate the way forward. Front and rear recovery hooks are also installed, as is a soft roll-up tonneau cover, spray on bed liner, and the GMC MultiPro tailgate. Up top, there’s an Infinity Roof with Transparent Sky Panels, while rocker protectors with assist steps are in the flanks.

Highlights in the cabin include a 13.4-inch diagonal color touch screen, plus Bluetooth streaming with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities, wireless device charging, advanced voice recognition, and OnStar. A Bose 14-speaker sound system is included as well, as is the GM Super Cruise semi-autonomous driver assist system.

The standard vehicle price is set at $108,700. All of the equipment mentioned is included as standard, and as such, there is no extra options charge. With a destination freight charge of $1,595 tacked on, the total vehicle price is listed at $110,295.

With all that covered, we have to ask – what do you want to know about the GMC Hummer EV Pickup? Post your questions in the comments and we’ll reply as soon as we can.

  1. How’s the visibility? How are the headlights at night? Does the air suspension act like the Tahoe where it’s constantly adjusting itself at stoplights and making air noises when you park? Can you disable the fake “engine” noises inside? How well does the “phone as key” feature work? Are the screens still decently visible in full sun with the tops off? How heavy are the tops, and how durable to they seem? How windy does it get with the tops off? Any buffeting with the windows up or down?

    1. Visibility is great The windows are not all that tall, but their width and the higher ride height seem to make up for that.

The air suspension works in much the same way as on the Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, etc. The constant adjusting seems to be a byproduct of the egress/ingress assist feature, which lowers the vehicle whenever the car thinks someone will be getting in or out. If you don’t want that, you can turn it off. I drove with it off for the first two days, and didn’t notice much in the way of constant adjusting. Turning it on definitely increased the adjusting frequency.

I will check on disabling the “fake” sounds, but I will say that I’ve begun to like them, especially in Watts to Freedom mode.

I’m not able to test the Phone as Key, since I’d need to create an OnStar account for the vehicle and register it to that account.

Screens are perfectly visible under any conditions, including with the tops off. I’m a big fan of these screens, including their brightness, graphics, animations, and information clarity.

The tops are about as heavy as the tops of the C7 and C8… they’re not all that difficult to remove to install, and are easily stored in the frunk. As for durability, they seem to be of a higher quality than the C7 and C8 tops. Also, the male pins are positioned vertically, as opposed to horizontally in the Corvettes, and that makes it easier to put them back on.

I drove with the tops off for most of yesterday, and didn’t experience any buffering. I don’t think it got unbearably windy, not enough for me to notice, anyway. I’ll also say that the open air experience offered by this vehicle is simply superb.

Thanks for the questions, and I’ll get back to you on the sounds.

  2. Is it easier as a daily driver than the last generation of hummers

    1. Though I have driven the H1, H2 and H3, I have more experience with the H3 compared to H2 or H1. With that said, both Hummer EVs – including the Pickup and SUV – make great daily drivers.

This pickup is a pleasure to drive, and is easy to live with. It’s also plenty comfortable and has all the creature comforts of a premium/luxury vehicle. I would skip the Extreme Off-Road package, however, which would equip it with the All Terrain tires over the Mud-Terrains, which can get noisy on the pavement. The Extreme Off-Road Package also deletes the rear stabilizer bar, and that makes the vehicle more compliant off-road, at the expense of worse cornering and a more saggy rear end under heavy acceleration.

I haven’t been negatively impacted by the long and wide dimensions, though I imagine that fitting one of these into a garage might be difficult for some.

The only downsides I’ve noticed thus far are:
      1. No one-touch-up windows
      2. No HUD
      3. No auto-dimming wing mirror on the passenger side
While I would expect all of these features of a vehicle that sells for over $100K, I would still buy one without these features.

      Thanks for the question!

    2. It is a joy to drive and rotates so easily around corners. If you drive with the seat elevated it makes seeing the traffic lights difficult depending on your height. My air system never vacillates. While using the aggressive setting on regenerative braking there is a bit of nose dive but the ride is incredible!

It’s My daily driver, I have had all the hummers H1, H2, H3 and now HEV!
I still have the H2, but the HEV is by far the nicest vehicle period!
The 4 wheel steering makes the truck soooo easy to maneuver and park. The truck is so nimble you would never know you are driving a 9,000lb monster. And it is FAST!!!!
