GMC Sierra E Production To Start In 2023

Production of the GMC Sierra E all-electric pickup will commence in 2023 at the newly renovated GM Factory Zero assembly plant in Michigan, previously known as Detroit-Hamtramck.

According to Reuters, General Motors will build a battery-electric version of the GMC Sierra full-size pickup alongside the future battery-electric Chevy Silverado E at its Factory Zero facility starting in 2023. The GMC Sierra E, as it may be called, will enter production after the Chevy Silverado E, which is expected to make its debut at the 2022 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this coming January. As we reported this week, production of the Chevy Silverado E will commence early in 2023.

The Factory Zero plant currently builds the 2022 GMC Hummer EV pickup and will eventually also produce the 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV, as well as the Cruise Origin autonomous robotaxi. GM invested $2.2 billion into the Detroit-Hamtramck plant to transform it into its first plant dedicated to producing larger battery-electric vehicles. Gerald Johnson, GM executive vice president of Global Manufacturing, previously described Factory Zero as “the next battleground in the EV race,” and “GM’s flagship assembly plant in our journey to an all-electric future.”

GMC Global Vice President Duncan Aldred confirmed the brand was working on a battery-electric full-size pickup during a media conference call this summer. This vehicle will be quite a bit different than the GMC Hummer EV Pickup, which is a premium lifestyle pickup aimed at wealthier customers. The GMC Sierra E, by comparison, will likely be more affordable and focused more on towing, utility and overall practicality.

GM BT1/Ultium electric truck platform

We expect the GMC Sierra E to share parts and attributes with the aforementioned Chevy Silverado E. GM previously confirmed the Chevy Silverado E would be available with four-wheel steering and 24-inch alloy wheels – equipment that may give us an idea of what to expect from the Sierra E. The electric truck will also utilize the automaker’s GM’s Ultium battery technology and GM’s Ultium electric motor technology, which should give the vehicle up to or over 400 miles of range in certain configurations.

We expect more details on the new GMC Sierra E to be released as its 2023 production start date nears. In the meantime, be sure to subscribe to GM Authority for more GM electric vehicle news, GM technology news, GMC Sierra news, GMC news and around-the-clock General Motors news coverage.

    1. My 2019 Dmax block heater was fixed last year under warrantee, and even going to WI and MN in the winter I have yet to have needed it once.

Call your dealer dude, pretty sure GMA has no Authority over past recalls.

And what this has to do with a future electric trucks other than the flow of electrons?

  6. They can’t even build vehicles with heated seats for 2022…nothing makes me belive this mismanaged company can build an electric truck. Mary Barra would have been fired long ago if she were a man. All talk and little evidence of the corporate shift she has been trumpeting for a decade.

  7. Awesome!! They can’t or won’t repair the 2019 Silverado 8 speed transmission I’ve been dealing with for 2 years but, only 20 more payments and that POS is all mine! I’m sure by then all of their “issues “ will be resolved and i can trade it and get a $70k E turd.😏

  10. Electric Trucks! Seriously I have a 2020 Silverado 3500HD with a bone working transfer case when u put it in auto and GM doesn’t know how to fix it. But they will be able to build a fully Electric Truck. That’s a joke!

    1. Gm sure will *NOT* be a leader in electric trucks if the way they’ve handled hundreds of ICE truck owners’ legitimate complaints is any indication of future production values.

It is almost as if GM doesn’t care that they’ve spent beaucoup bucks developing the new Automatics and Transfer Cases – and then to basically ignore all the problems they are having with them. Ditto with the ‘infotainment’ systems.

Electric Trucks will avoid many of the mechanical troubles experienced of late by recent GMC truck owners – but the Corporation’s Inattention to Detail has manifested itself in the electric world with the poor quality control of BOLT batteries – necessitating a blanket recall.

GM and FORD’s claim that they won’t be making any more ice vehicles by 2030 just doesn’t make any sense to me…I drive 3 evs myself, but I expect Fully ICE vehicles, or possibly in the future, hybrid vehicles with an ICE engine will be very commonplace then….

ICE engines in commercial vehicles in general work very well. No need to arbitrarily rid the product line of them. I suspect both GM and FORD will be forced to change their tune regarding abandonment of ICE’s.

Barra’s main interest seems to be levitating the Stock Price – which mainly benefits just her…For that reason and others, its time for new blood at the top.
