Chevrolet Silverado HD Spied Once Again With GMC MultiPro Tailgate

In April 2019, GM Authority was first to bring you photos of the all-new, 2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD undergoing testing with what appeared to be the GMC MultiPro tailgate. A few days later, in May, we managed to peel back the tailgate camo to confirm the presence of the MultiPro. The sightings were curious, since the MultiPro tailgate is exclusive to the GMC Sierra family, while – as of this writing – not being available on any Silverado. And now, almost a year after those two initial sightings, we have just spied another Silverado HD with the MultiPro tailgate undergoing testing, representing the third sighting of the Chevrolet truck equipped with the advanced GMC tailgate.

The truck we see here is only wearing checkered-wrap camouflage coupled with some thick, black cladding on the tailgate. By comparison, prior instances of the Silverado with the MultiPro have had significantly more checkered camouflage, particularly on the exterior sides of the bed. They were also painted a different color than this model.

Speaking of this particular model, it appears to be a Silverado HD with the Double Cab – Long Bed body style. It also appears to be finished in the LT trim level, based on the body-color door handles plus chrome front and rear bumpers, characteristics that are unique to the LT equipment group.

It’s also worth noting that GM Authority noticed the presence of the MultiPro tailgate in the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado owner’s manual. However, the 2020 Silverado never got the tailgate. As such, we expect the Chevy Silverado to get the MultiPro tailgate for either the 2021 or 2022 model years, for both the 1500 (Light Duty) model as well as the Heavy Duty (2500HD / 3500HD) models. Keep in mind that both the Silverado and Sierra are to get a midcycle enhancement for the 2022 model year that will include new interiors. GM Authority was first to report on the matter earlier this month.

However, we fully expect Chevy to have its own brand for the tailgate, since MultiPro is most directly associated with GMC and its Like a Pro slogan.

  1. Unless they are adding or changing the way it operates why the need to test it or even hide it.

  2. That’s what I was going to ask what’s the big secret the need to be fixing that interior and adding power to that l5p to beat ford that’s what they need to be working on

    1. Your not kidding. GM got it handed to them hauling 30K up the IKE by FORD. That was hugely embarrassing, as the Ford was over a minute and a half faster, fewer decels, and better mpg. I remember when they released the L5P and they ran it up the IKE. It’s time was nearly identical to the previous GM Dmax that had less hp and torque. I own an L5P and it pulls well enough, but clearly that new Ford SD is actually putting down the power it says it has. That has been an issue for Ford in the past, but clearly they have started living up to their own spec sheet.

      1. The American Bro drag race. Hook an enormous trailer to your diesel then race it up a mountain.

      3. Chevy is the king with the 2500’s in every day Life. Both the Dmax and 6.6gas get better unladen and trailering mpg with the 2500’s. TFLTruck people showed the Dmax is inferior when towing 30k pounds, but it Rocks in the 2500’s. I wouldn’t get even the new Ford Godzilla motor over GM’s 6.6 gas, and the Dmax if I was going 2500.

    3. I agree. And while they are at it, do a bit more work on that front end. It hangs down so far, it’s ugly. The hood is 6 feet in the air, yet the front bumper nearly scrapes the ground. It needs better approach angle. They need to take a page from the Square Body designs. One of the hottest selling body styles-EVER. In fact, it’s getting harder and harder, to even find o good one for sale. Chevy has come a long way, but is still missing the boat on overall great styling. And, STILL no straight axle option, until the 4500 series. Just sayin’

  3. I was thinking on the weekend it would be nice if a standard tailgate had the flip up cargo stop like on the multi pro. Wouldn’t take any extra motors or electronic buttons. Just a simple push release to flip up just like it is in multipro.

  4. That’s a gas engine truck in the pictures. I’m guessing they main reason they’re testing it is because it’s a 10-speed mule.

  5. Live to dream.. Chevrolet joins the bandwagon that Ford and RAM are doing by offering a high performance engine variant option for the Silverado HD with the 650 hp LT4 supercharged 6.2L V8.

  6. Trick tailgate, would make hooking the 5th wheel much simpler.

  7. Typical chevy steeling a feature. GM would have been in better shape if it would stop pandering to cheby.

    1. I’m pretty sure without Chevrolet the feds wouldn’t have agreed to save GM/GMC. For Decades did GMC steal all of those Chevy Blue Flame 6’s, Big Block and Small Block Chevy’s from the Chevrolet Motor Division? Or how about the Chevrolet body designs that a GMC grille/emblem was stuck on so they could be sold at BOP dealers? At least be fair. No Chevy = No GMC.

    2. S , You don’t know anything about Chevy or GMC trucks ! Just think about it , GMC has used Chevy parts sense med 50s ! Starting with frame, engine, body parts ,Transmission’s and other ! Hell the GMC is a Chevy Pickup truck ! Today everything is Chevy, Except a little deference in style !

  8. why limit the the availability of a tailgate unless the motive is to push people to higher priced trucks. I would think it would see the most use on trucks used in the trades something like this has been needed since the widespread use of short and standard length beds.options are profit makers why not make more profit?

    1. It’s about marketing. Who in their right mind buys Ferraris? Once it’s old news they will make it available across the board and move o to the next gig, which will probably be next year

  9. I have no problem with the looks of the front end. It’s very plainly to see this is a Chevrolet.

  10. I have been a Chevy guy all my life. I have 7 Chevy’s and my latest is a 2015 2500. Been waiting on the new design and when I saw that ugly front end I wouldn’t think of buying that. Not even the High Country. Chevy doesn’t get it. Why do you think Ford out sells the Silverado. It’s because it looks better. Not because it is engineered better but looks better. Chevy and GM’s are engineered better but Ford is designed better. Now that Ford has a decent motor in their heavy duty, I think it’s time to switch. Bye Chevy.

    1. Why do you think the GMC’s exist? The new Chevy’s have that radical look because that is the look that Ford goes with, and it’s supposed to out Ford the Ford. I agree with you that it’s not my favorite look, and that’s why I’m looking at the GMC’s. Complain about Chevy, but unless you are secretly a Ford troll, you can’t complain. The new Chevy is the Ford look with a bowtie. Your classic gm look, go to GMC. What do you think about the new Sierra’s? The SLE and LT trims are almost the same price.

  11. Stop the marketing tactics. Those people are just a drain on the business, trying to justify their cost as expendable overhead.

You have a better mousetrap. R&D cost and tooling are already sunk. It doesn’t cost you much to make incrementally. Offer it on your entire product line asap and improve market share.
