Earlier this week, GM Authority was first to bring you spy photos of a curious 2020 Chevy Silverado HD prototype undergoing testing with a camouflaged tailgate. We believed that the tarp-like cover over the tailgate was hiding the innovative MultiPro tailgate that debuted on the all-new 2019 GMC Sierra on the T1 platform, but couldn’t be complete sure, until now.
Our spy ended up getting… shall we say… a “closer” look at the Chevy Silverado HD prototype – revealing the tell-tale cut lines for the MultiPro behind the tarp. The sighting confirms, beyond any reasonable doubt, that the trick new tailgate will make its way to the Silverado HD. In addition, we assume that the light-duty Silverado 1500 will also be the lucky recipient of the feature.
We expect the Chevy Silverado 1500 to get the MultiPro tailgate for the 2020 model year (see more about 2020 Silverado) and the Chevy Silverado HD to get it either for the 2020i (2020 interim) or the 2021 model year. Chevy will likely have its own name for the feature, since MultiPro is most directly associated with GMC and its Like a Pro mantra.

I hope Chevy gets a mechanical multipro. As in no electric motors to operate. Have the normal tailgate pull handle, and then a smaller handle to drop the upper gate. Have both gates damped to assist raising and lower the heavy unit.
1. helps reduce price
2. reduces complexity
3. you don’t accidentally release the gate – especially with a hitch in
I like a standard damped tailgate plus the rear bumper corner steps. i think that is currently the best package for function and price. but i would be more interested in a mechanical operated multipro
Personally living with a pick up truck myself. I’d rather prefer the current high country tailgate with power lift and release. Am I wrong but doesn’t the multi pro tailgate only have a power release?
These tailgates will be optional on most models and only standard on other models.
Watch as this will move to the mid size trucks too.
You will have a Multi Pro. A Power assist and standard gates. All are easy to change. It could even be a dealer added option or delete.
Whatever it’s called, it should be available on all trim level trucks, but very doubtful that it will be.
This will go the way of quadrasteer. Better buy 3 tailgates because GM will stop making spare parts for them the minute they’re allowed to.
Instead of redesigning their boxy trucks they come up with this? Thankfully Ford still concentrates on truck engineering.
All trucks are boxes lmao. Ford just happens to have the ugliest of the bunch.
No Ford tailgate ever looked so ugly. Ford gets the simple things right. Enjoy your latest cosmetic muse.
Lol their yellow knob grab handle for their clunky step looks good?
Even though the GM interior didn’t change much, it still looks better and has a more functional layout than F150
The new HD is so horribly ugly. Focus groups scored it well? I would like to throat punch their focus groups. How do you get the Sierra HD so right and screw the Silverado HD up so badly? GM is going backwards .
Chevrolet Silverado getting the GMC Sierra MultiPro Tailgate is like yesteryear when Chevrolet and Pontiac share new things because underneath their sheetmetal.. the Camaro and Firebird were the same car just as there isn’t much difference under the sheetmetal of the Silverado and the Sierra.
It’s inevitable that GM’s desire to maximize profits will result in mere logo loyalty. At the cost of 2% higher interest lease rates for a GMC vs. the same Chevy.
I’m glad too see that. I like the Silverado and the Sierra. I think they got a real good design, probably the best of the big 3. I just hope they really take a look of the things they missed, the ones everyone sees not just me. They can make the Silverado great and not take away from the Sierra. They are more distant from each other than they ever have been and I like it and am proud. Just hope they realize that Ram isn’t only gaining sales because of the high rebates. They are challenging the truck market. Ford on the other hand, I don’t know what people see in it over the GM twins. Yes it was nice when it was introduced and the aluminum body craze but it’s nothing extraordinary in my opinion.
