GMC Sierra, Chevrolet Silverado Interior Updates Coming For 2022: Exclusive

Back in August 2019, GM Authority was the first to report that General Motors was planning to bring various updates to the GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado interiors. In that report, we stated that the updates will arrive for either the 2021 or 2022 model years. Now, we have learned that the updates will not come for the 2021 model year, but rather for 2022.
The upgrades will synchronize with a refresh, known in GM terminology as a mid-cycle enhancement (MCE), that will also deliver a few minor updates to the exterior. The interior enhancements, meanwhile, will be focused around the mid- and high-end trim levels of each vehicle, though all models should benefit from the updates. Enhancements to the interiors of the Silverado HD and Sierra HD should follow roughly a year after that the light-duty Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 models. The release of the offroad-focused Silverado ZRX should follow around the same timeframe.
Since their release in the second half of 2018 as 2019 models, the all-new 2019 Chevrolet Silverado and 2019 GMC Sierra pickups have been criticized for having interiors that aren’t different enough from those of the last-generation K2 models. Meanwhile, others have praised the interior of the Ram Pickup, also all-new for the 2019 model year, as being more attractive and luxurious than that of the Silverado and Sierra. Meanwhile, others have offered a different take on the Sierra and Silverado interiors, stating that the cabins of GM’s new pickup trucks are just fine.
Furthermore, our sources told us that the interior updates will draw upon the cabins of the all-new 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe / 2021 Chevrolet Suburban and 2021 GMC Yukon, while still remaining “truck-like.” It’s also worth noting that the upcoming GMC Hummer EV will make its debut in 2021 for the 2022 model year. As such, it’s possible that incoming updates for the GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado interior upcoming EV pickup will also benefit from the cabin of GM’s first electric pickup truck.
We’ll have much more on this topic in the near future, so be sure to subscribe to GM Authority as we bring you the latest Chevrolet Silverado news, Chevrolet news as well as GMC Sierra news, GMC news, and ongoing GM news coverage.

It is inexcusable how lower end trucks with a bench seat can no longer have an opening console. How hard is that to change?
They seem to have the option of a storage on the bench when you go and do a build your own. I also heard the option gives you storage in just one section of the middle bench. So guessing it would be the top part but I’m not sure.
GM, stop building all black interiors!!
I own a 2013 LTZ HD with tan interior and that is what I want. I live in the South and it gets very hot in the summer. Can’t sit on black seats!!!
That change is coming for 2021 all trims will have storage.
its all about pinching dollars say you sell 2 million low end trucks over the design cycle and you save $10 on a center console poof 20 million simoleons you can say thats covers Mary for a year poof
It’s also inexcusable that a mid tier LT model doesn’t have a rear seat fold down armrest, lighted visor mirrors, a leather wheel or even a power seat unless you spend another 2200-2400 bucks and then even more for the convenience II package just to get the rear seat storage and armrest. Some of these items should be standard considering the mid 40’s price tag.
Isn’t the LT model (in Chevrolet terms) usually a lower end version though? I don’t have a problem with them selling lower end versions with things I don’t care about.
As for pricing… Well trucks are kind of expensive, aren’t they?
Your thinking of the previous generation LS trim which slotted below the LT. The current trim levels include Work Truck as the base, then the Custom/Custom Trailboss then the LT/RST then the LTZ and High Country. The RST is just a sportier version of the LT. Note that the previous generation Silverado LT had the rear seat armrest, overhead sunglasses holder, lighted visor mirrors, power driver’s seat and leather wheel all as std equipment. All of this was deleted for 2019 with the only item being gained the rear seat air vents and a couple of other little things.
Any news on the regular cab short bed coming ?
Regular cab short bed !!
Give us back our truck ! If you can sell it in Saudi Arabia you can sell it here !
if they did make it would be a slow seller, hard to find, low on content compared to a double or crew and overpriced, plus low rebates and low trade in value would not make financial sense just like they were in the past but a 6.2 reg. cab short bed 2wd would be fun
Bo, you said it. So dumb not available in U.S.
That is what happens when you sell to focus groups and not actual customers.
If the problem was really that it was a rush to get them out to the market why is it taking three years to put an acceptable interior in them? K2xx trucks had nicer interiors
Hey…there might be hope for us regular cab short box guys !!
I’d buy one tomorrow…fully loaded ..as is currently available in the middle east market right now.

they sell them in Mexico to.
The old adage, ‘We don’t have time to do it right, but we have time to fix it’.

Doing it that way is a waste of money time and sales and a loss of sales is money you can’t recover. But I guess GM knows best. That being said I am still not a fan of the stuck on tablet like thing in the new Tahoe’s. My choice would have been that size screen but with the built in more integrated look. Building the best from the start would have went a long way in improving GM’s image and most likely sales.
The screen-as-afterthought designs are bit with the German makes. Maybe GM decided this look would attract buyers who perceive this as being, somehow, “luxury”.
I think GM failed to realize that full sized trucks are no longer used for utility purposes (ie: hauling things in the truck bed or towing anything behind.) Full size trucks are luxury vehicles for American men who like comfort and tech but want to display how manly they are by how much their truck can potentially haul/ tow & climb a 45 degree rocky incline even if they never will. 90 percent of the time, these trucks are used to get groceries or take the kids to football practice.
Two prime examples of this are the Raptor and now the Cybertruck. Two vehicles the ooze machismo but have no practical use outside of cruising down the street or flooring it when the traffic light turns green to show how much torque they have. And I’m sure there are plenty of people out there that use Trucks on construction sites, ranches, etc. But the majority of those people drive older Fords and Chevys and new Toyota Tundras.
It seems like GM caught on with the Hummer EV. It will hit that macho sweet spot for so many men. Congrats.
Andy’s testicles have yet to descend into his empty scrotum
Toyota Tundra on farms? Not a lot of those around here. Mostly Chevy/GMC and Fords. Toyota doesn’t sell enough Tundra to have a lot on very many farms across the U.S.
But I do agree that there are way too many “specialty” trucks, suv, Jeeps that haven’t been used for their intended purpose. It’s a waste of money. You can buy a less expensive trim level and add some customization and make the vehicle look nice and save a lot of money.
You must have never been to texas, or the Gulf coast in general then
The exterior refresh is a bit of a surprise. I can’t imagine them not looking fresh in a year from now. Good they are staying ahead, I suppose.
The exterior changes will be minor. The cabin will see a big change.
I think he was talking more along the lines of a new trim level, not necessarily a new body style all around. There may be a mid model year refresh, but that would only be subtle changes.
they always do a freshening up 2-3 years after and boy is it needed
Well the last gen Sierra & Silverado trucks had a MCE 2 years after being introduced (2014-2015, then 2016-2018), so that’s not a real big surprise. I’m disappointed to see the interior re-do for 2022 though. Another year for the Silverado sales to fall behind the Ram??
Don’t forget that the 2yr MCE on the 2014-2016 models came from similar negative reactions that the current interior is getting.
they dont care they probably figure they cannot cover the cost of the needed updates by raising prices. which probably were thought about when they were doing the redesign but they decided to go cheap and pocket the millions for there energizer bunny vehicles
Awesome news!! Thank you GMAuthority for always keeping me informed.. my hats off to you Alex Luft.
I’m glad to hear this.. back 10-15 years ago the interiors weren’t as luxury driven as they are now today. I mean to some standards yes. Now it still have to improve on towing and payload, fuel economy, functionality, performance, and have a knock out Of the park interior. Back in 2005-2006 I think the option out price of a fully loaded truck was around $45,000. Now it can achieve over $60,000. It has become incredibly more diverse and demanding/competitive. Awhile back it was like this a truck it’s what I work in I don’t need all the bells and whistles and shiny stuff, and now over 40% of Sierra buyers are buying the Denali’s.
So I’m glad they put in the effort to upgrade the interior having Ford going to release there trucks within a year or more. So thanks GM for listening.
The GM/Chevy is still the nicest truck on the road overall, the interior may be behind the Ram if your after Luxury but everywhere else the Chev/GM has the Ram beat, experior styling is not even close the GM product looks way nicer, not to mention the GM product has a stronger resale value.
Lol, the only thing GM has Ram beat on is the 6.2. Why Ram does not offer the 6.4 in the 1500 is anybody’s guess.
What about the 2.7 and the 5.3 getting the 10 speed standard? The 8 speed needs to die.
What’s sad is these old school designers are retiring, and now we are getting this new wave of designers. It sucks! It’s why I went to Ford. Now for 2021 independent rear suspension?? What are they thinking? The thing is they ride terrific now, solid axle is way stronger! ITS A TRUCK NOT A CAR! When you put a load on that rear end the rear wheels will be at a angle hey it’s just going to help out Dodge, and Ford. I have the F 250 because of the solid front axle. I was always a GM Man until my 2009 1500 Silverado went back for warranty work 84 times. I lemon Law’ed GM and won, they should cut out this cylinder deactivation it doesn’t help with mileage, after a certain amount of miles when it would go to v4 mode you could feel a slight vibration because the engine was un-balanced the cylinders that deactivated had carbon build up on them. You could feel it through the steering wheel it had 65,000 miles on it when it started doing that. KEEP THE CHROME STEEL BUMPERS! The steel body panels are to soft you can dent the body just by pressing yr pinky finger into the steel panels on the bed, it’s sad!
Oh yeah BRING BACK A MANUAL TRANSMISSION! And stop making these screens for the dash It gets people killed They play with that damn screen while driving
few want to row there own gears in n. america anymore costs too much to make it an option dealers wont order dont make any sense they went away just like roll-up windows plus they do not engineer man. trans. anymore would have to outsource them so they would have to charge more than an auto. Agree with you people get killed by people playing with infotainment screens thats why they give you a warning screen from time to time they should log that you were playing before a crash than they can send the idiots to jail when they screw up
About time.. the interior redesign should be this year or 2021. Another thing they need to address is the 5.3 V8.. more power or an updated version of the 6.0 V8.. one can only wish tho. 😒
The do have a updated version of the 6.0. The have a new 6.6 to replace it. Not a big bump in power though.
its all about fuel economy want more power buy a 6.2
GM has been losing me ever since they came out with these new gen trucks (don’t get me started on that god awful excuse for a blazer reboot). They clearly don’t listen to a thing their fans want. We wanted afm gone, and they give us dfm? Wth GM? And the push button only tailgate is a recipe for disaster, especially for the peeps in the northern states where they get salt on the roads (salt+electronics=bad day). And who’s genius idea was it to put a four cylinder engine in a full size truck? Sigh…Guess I’ll just stick to older gen used and project trucks from now on.
The power tailgate is an option. The 2.7L is also an option.
What’s your issue with cylinder deactivation exactly? Concerns about durability?
I guess I misspoke on the tailgate. I’ve only seen these trucks with the push button so I thought it was the only choice. My bad. I know the 2.7 is an option, i just don’t think it belongs in the truck period. Gm should focus strictly on the v6, the two v8’s and the 3.0 dmax. And yes, durability issues are exactly why I hate dfm. Too many reasons to list why I don’t like afm/dfm. The more moving parts, the higher probability for breakage.
I never had an issue with the 2017 Silverado we had, but looking into it, a lot of people have had problems with the afm system and oil consumption, so maybe you’re onto something there.
My biggest complaint about it was that it rarely let the engine run in 4 cylinder mode anyway, and even when it did mileage wasn’t significantly better.
my 5.3 2018 silverado gets 24 mpg driving 65 mph running on 4 cylinders on the interstates.
50 people on a forum isn’t a lot and oil consumption is even more rare. People mistake what they hear which is mostly people regurgitation first gen AFM engine issues which are mostly non existent in these new gen engines. These engines have been designed and learned from decades of experience with this tech. There isn’t an issue with them, they aren’t any more likely to not last, older engines also had failure points, it is a mechanical machine made by people, there will be failures or issues that sparingly can happen.
It shouldn’t be significantly better. When mine changes it jumps up a couple MPG’s, if I am light with the throttle it will stay for a bit. Overall it might add 1mpg to the average of the truck, that is pretty good being the brick it is. Add that to the lower valence which might add a half mpg to the overall average (they are good for about 1 mpg at highway speeds) as well as aero curtains and other pieces and it all adds up to another 2 mpg you weren’t getting which comes out to about $2,500 over 10 years or $250 a year. Easily pays for itself even if the rare occurrence something goes wrong and the cost to fix it.
The cylinder deactivation has more to do with getting the trucks through the treadmill tests than anything to do with everyday, real world operation. Variation on the theme: Ford pickups running in real-world conditions, are not achieving anywhere near the fuel economy the treadmill tests yield. At least Dodge* and GMC?Chevy come closer.
*I’m old. I keep thinking Dodge, not Ram.
blame your congressman for the afm/dfm . people do not seem to understand washington dc has more to do with the design of your truck than GM
I would like to see the V6 have the Turbo for the full size truck.
I would think that would be a big deal for the full size.
After having a turbo in a Envision tha last 3 years that sounds like
a good option for an engine in the full size.
With the 10 speed tranny of coarse.
So a roughly 0.01% failure risk is your reason? Because you read about a handful on a forum? That is the place people go to complain and not at all a representation of the actual failure rate which is extremely low. They sell millions of these engine with that and very few have issues. MPG needs to be met, either you have a larger engine with fuel saving tech or you do a smaller motor with forced induction, put your poison. Both will have most likely questionable long term durability compared to say a large cube NA motor with lower power levels, but it will get way worse mpg which honestly does need to be improved on for everyone.
I drove mine for 45,000 miles without any issue. My only complaint with AFM is that the truck only ran in 4 cylinder mode downhill or when decelerating. So basically never when it mattered.
I’ll assume it’s just like stop-start; Only there to game the CAFE, and not to provide any useful fuel savings.
Most of their fans have no problems with AFM/DFM. You want a fancier interior and more tech that means more innovation such as a remote tailgate, that is because of box checkers such as your self… The 4 cylinder is actually faster than the 2014-2018 Silverado with the 5.3. It is a great motor and since many of the owners don’t actually haul or tow anything it saves them gas for their daily drive and allows them a lower purchase price instead of going in to debt carrying a $800 a month truck payment to impress people they don’t know.
Air curtains help with fuel saving, not sure what the problem is with those, it is a design element. And just putting in the SUV interior wouldn’t be a great idea, getting rid of an actual good truck interior in a truck sounds asinine…. Not sure why the image conscious suburban box checking dads and driving so many of the decisions with these trucks. As one review I watched the other day mentioned the GM interior may not be the prettiest or fanciest place to be but it is the most robust and familiar. There is no learning process, it will last and flat out work for the life of the truck which can’t be said about the others. Why would you want to get away from that? Add a few fancier materials to appease the box checker crowd, give the dash a nip/tuck to improve some wasted space and a slightly larger screen (please god don’t tack it on at the top like the SUV’s) and call it. It will be fresher, it will last and won’t require a degree to figure everything out.
They don’t need to appease everything, it is a truck that needs to work which some of the others have forgotten about. Ram, as soon as you option it up has a measly 1k payload or around that, yeah that truck can certainly to some work… It will struggle to stay legal with the family in it and 20ft boat on the hitch. Sure it rides like a car, but trucks these days are riding better than ever before, including the GM twins even though they don’t ride as nice as the Ram. Profits are high, ATP’s are towards the top so who cares if it sells a few less trucks than Ram, don’t water it down to appease those that have no business in a truck to begin with, let them go to Ram or one of the German luxury car brands.
dont worry about the tailgate that is in the body control module it is safe from corrosion. cylinder deactivation is a new reality to start change your oil regularly and do not floor it when it is deactivation mode.when the warranty is up you can disconnect a wire or if you know someone that can reasonably put a HP tuners tune in it you can turn it off and probably get the same gas mileage with a economy tune or turn up the power and smoke the tires if you want.
The quicker they can get the 2021 Tahoe dash with larger info screen into the pickups, the less GM will have to discount these trucks. The only difference is that the current dash has a double glove box and the new dash has just one.
I don’t know if these are interchangeable, but they look like they should be?
Maybe they could still do the new dash for 2021?
A 1/2 ton truck now cost what a 3/4 ton diesel truck cost just a few years ago. If GM is going to charge north of $55k for a nicely equipped 1/2 ton, then the interior IMHO should reflect that price point. Also, unlike RAM and Ford, GM still wax coats its frame…which doesn’t hold up in the salt belt. GM if you are listening, please start e-coating your frames for us northerners.
I too wish they’d e-coat their frames. The wax is a cost cutting measure for sure and I don’t really understand why they do it on the full size truck given it’s their most important vehicle. It’s a hassle to clean and just doesn’t hold up. The Colorado is e-coated and the frames look so much better after years of salt and grime. However I’m happy about the interior! I hope they fix the front ends on the Chevy though and give it a full bumper again without the air scoop fangs. Do away with that front fender Malibu/Equinox swoop too.
I just want Chevy to win again like the old days. No compromises.
I wish they would do that also. The wax does break down over time, and that can start to happen within 3-4 years.
It’s also hard to put anything over the broken down wax coating, to protect the frame from further rust.
Of all the years they have been coating the frames, all the years we lived up north, GM has never has an issue of frames rusting out compared to the competition. Dipping the frames allows the insides and every nook and cranny to be coated as opposed to the competition and their spray. Looks aside (who cares it is under the truck and you never see it, has no need to be “pretty”) the wax dipped frames seem superior to everything I have read. Don’t fix what isn’t broke…
there penny pinchers why spend money to prevent a problem that would cut into future sales. if your in for the long haul carefully hose the underbody every spring and dont forget to say your prayers
Lets hope they don’t go with the “stuck on tablet” approach for the center screen. I can’t see myself ever buying a vehicle with that.
Wait why did the article say that the hummer ev will debut in 2021, did they delay it from the month of May??
I know it’s all about cost but why not give them their own distinct albeit updated interior and not just copy the Tahoe and Yukon. Come on GM take the lead….and give Ford and Ram the punch they deserve.
