Chevrolet Silverado Medium Duty Production Resumes At Navistar Plant

Production of the Chevrolet Silverado Medium Duty has resumed at Navistar’s assembly plant in Springfield, Ohio.

According to The Springfield News Sun, at least 700 workers were called back to the Navistar-run plant this week as its main production line restarted. The plant builds the Chevrolet Silverado Medium Duty on behalf of General Motors, along with the related International CV Series line of trucks.

Production at the Navistar plant came to a halt in late March due to a parts supply shortage brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Navistar had originally planned to restart production at the facility in early April, but was forced to extend the shutdown into May as the parts shortage continued.

For now, only the Springfield plant’s main line has restarted, with the two secondary lines set to restart at a later date. Navistar has not said when the plant may be back running at full capacity.

Similar to GM plants, Navistar has implemented a number of measures to keep workers safe at the Springfield facility. Workers will have their temperature taken when they arrive at work and will also be required to wear a face mask, gloves and goggles while on the line. A UAW spokesperson told The Springfield News Sun that Navistar is also enforcing social distancing guidelines where possible.

To reiterate, the Navistar plant is not a GM plant. While Navistar builds the Chevrolet Silverado Medium Duty at the Springfield plant, it does so under contract from GM, so workers there are not direct GM employees.

The Chevrolet Silverado Medium Duty is a commercial truck that’s was developed by both General Motors and Navistar. The vehicle features a previous-generation Silverado cab and is powered by GM’s 6.6L L5D V8 Duramax diesel engine and an Allison transmission. The medium duty truck is available in three models, 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD, and offers with various frame lengths and GVWRs.
