Roughly 1,500 workers have returned to the GM CAMI Assembly plant in Ontario, Canada following a six-month production shutdown. The production shutdown was announced in September of 2023 as the result of dwindling supplies of battery modules required for production of the BrightDrop Zevo 600 and BrightDrop Zevo 400 all-electric delivery vans. Battery supplies for production at the CAMI facility are now bolstered by onsite battery module production.
According to a report from The London Free Press, workers returned to the CAMI facility on Tuesday, April 2nd after the plant was idled in October of 2023. Workers will now resume production in a rotating schedule, with 400 workers on the job for two weeks before another 400 workers rotate in. A further 450 skilled trades and other positions are also now back at work, but not as part of the rotating shifts schedule.
“It is excellent, it is so good to get back to work,” said Mike Van Boekel, chairperson of Unifor Local 88, which represents workers at the CAMI facility.
“We are starting to get on the other side of supply chain issues and we have note yet hit the scale of EV manufacturing, that will take a few more years [before there’s more stability in the EV market]”, he added, per The London Free Press.
EV production at the CAMI facility is bolstered by a 400,000-square-foot battery assembly plant located onsite, which employs a further 200 full-time employees.
The all-electric BrightDrop Zevo delivery vans are in service now, with BrightDrop rushing to fill new orders from several major companies, including Walmart, Hertz, FedEx, Verizon, and others. The Zevo lineup includes the Zevo 600, which offers up to 614.7 cubic feet of cargo room, and the Zevo 400, which offers up to 412 cubic feet of cargo room. Both vehicles incorporate GM Ultium batteries and GM Ultium Drive motors.
