GM Now Including Automatic Emergency Braking In Almost All Its Vehicles

GM is among several automakers that have met their voluntary pledge to add Automatic Emergency Braking to the great majority of the vehicles in their product portfolio.

A total of 20 car companies, including GM, made the pledge in 2016, but five of those automakers lagged the others until now, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, or IIHS.

The automakers’ pledge called for them to produce at least 95 percent of their light-duty vehicles – a category that includes passenger cars, pickup trucks, and SUVs – with AEB during the 12 months between September 1st, 2022 to August 31st, 2023, according to the IIHS. The non-profit organization says five of the 20 companies that had been below the threshold now crossed it, including Porsche, Land Rover, Maserati, Jaguar and GM.

For the 2021 model year, only 42 percent of GM models featured Automatic Emergency Braking as standard, with an additional 36 percent offering the system as an available option, for a total of 78 percent of The General’s models including AEB in some form. For 2024 model year, 93 percent of GM models are equipped with AEB as standard. The following table shows AEB availability for the 2021 through 2024 model years.

Back in 2020, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said that GM vehicles had among the lowest availability of Automatic Emergency Braking among all automakers, with just 47 percent of models offering the feature. At the time, this contrasted sharply with Volvo and Tesla, which offered AEB in 100 percent of their models.

The General continued to lag other automakers in 2021 when it comes to AEB. Both GM and Stellantis had very low inclusion of Automatic Emergency Braking during that year as standard, while consumer organizations were reporting that at least 12 other automakers were already in compliance with the voluntary pledge.

An IIHS study conducted in 2018 found that Automatic Emergency Braking, combined with Forward Collision Alert technology, cut front-to-rear crashes involving GM vehicles by 43 percent. Similar crashes with injuries were reduced by 64 percent.

  1. Funny that my 2022 C8 HTC 2LT DIDN’T have the safety features of the majority of the safety features. I paid extra for the 2lt to get safety features but sure didn’t get what lesser costing vehicles had standard!! Thanks GM !! Tomg

    1. Don’t use my phone while driving and if I do it’s thru the vehicle’s system

  3. I HATE this feature. I was trying to pull my car up, and opened my door. The emergency brake automatically engaged, and slammed the brakes on.

What fool came up with this? The same one with the stop start garbage?

    1. I have it in my XT5. Though I appreciate it for preventing a situation that can potentially damage my vehicle, it does get annoying when pulling out of my garage. More than once the system slammed on the brakes even though I was in the clear of the opening scaring the living s*** out of me. I can’t pullout to fast or else it will activate. And it slams hard to the point that it feels like you hit something and disorients you until you realize the car is telling you it activated the feature.

And totally agree with you on the Start-Stop garbage. I also have that in my XT5 and it gets turned off every time the car gets started. Thankfully GM added the off switch. Because when they didn’t have it like several years ago, I was looking elsewhere.

Delivering Fords, I found using cruise control can be dangerous. A driver can move over and turn right in front of you which sends the Ford into panic mode.

  5. Rear cross traffic emergency braking should be standard.

  6. Does automatic emergency braking function when in reverse? If so, I could see this being a problem when backing up a trailer or backing up to a trailer when hitching it up. Is AEB disabled when tow mode is enabled?

  7. Always the last for widespread implementation. They feature block things no other manufacure does because they lack real options and features.
