Officially introduced back in July 2019, the 2020 Corvette Stingray turned the sports car segment on its head by offering exceptional levels of performance for a relatively affordable price. Now that the high-performance 2023 Corvette Z06 is on the loose, it can be easy to forget that the C8 Stingray is no slouch in its own right, as exemplified by a 2022 Corvette Stingray almost breaking the 200 mph barrier.
More precisely, this 2022 C8 Corvette Stingray recently ran 191 mph on the 3.2 mile-long runway at the Kennedy Space Center’s Launch and Landing Facility.
Equipped with the Z51 performance handling package, this C8 is powered by the 6.2L V8 LT2 gasoline engine, which is rated at 495 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque with dual-mode performance exhaust system (RPO code NPP). Without the performance exhaust (which is standard on Z51-equipped units), output is rated at 490 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. The GM eight-speed dual clutch automatic transmission handles the gear shifts.
Notably, the video has the weight of this particular C8 included, listing it at 3,534 pounds.
This isn’t the first time GM Authority has covered a C8 Stingray going 190+ mph. Four years ago, General Motors themselves conducted a top-speed test of the then-new C8 Vette, and managed to hit 194 mph on a straight-away. It’s worth noting that this figure was determined by taking the average of multiple top speed runs in an effort to reduce any possible variables like wind and track elevation changes.
For those who may be a little uncomfortable traveling at those velocities, the C8 is impressive in reverse too, topping at 31 mph driving backwards in another video clip.
As a reminder, all C8 Corvette variants, including the upcoming hybrid C8 E-Ray, ride on the GM Y2 platform. Production takes place exclusively at the GM Bowling Green plant in Kentucky.

I thought Z51 was supposed to reduce the top speed to 184 mph… Impressive how a Z51 can reach 192 mph!
This ‘Vette has the low wing option.
Video shows a table with an 18 mph tail wind too!
I was just talking to my wife about doing a high speed run like that – anyone know if it is possible somewhere?
Yes at the Silver State Road Challenge in Ely Nevada.
Event in May and Sept every year. Also the Big Bend Challenge in Fort Stockton, Texas which may have already occurred this month.
I was wondering the same thing. Or at least run a 0-60 run, and a quarter mile run.
That 18 mph tail wind really helps.
Why the down thumbs? Do you not believe that an 18 mph tail wind helps to increase mph? Probably why the car was able to get to 192 vs. 184 rating with zero wind speed.
Ya,when I have a tail wind ,I can go faster on my bike.
Pretty cool stuff but top end speed never really has been a big deal for me. Anything beyond quarter mile speed and time is academic.
” W. H Y ” You can’t go that fast on any roads.
Frankrizzo – Read my comments above. These events are legally held on public highways.

What you say might be all well and good. I’m saying the greatest % of drivers donot need a vehicle that goes that fast ,when the highway speed laws prohibit the need.
I need a window net, helmet, 5 point harness, fire extinguisher, mandatory instruction, and prior attendance of an event, to go “up to 140mph” in grand touring class???
I can rent a car in Germany, and do “up to 140mph” legally without special licensing, no limited course or special date/time waiting, no “monitoring by officials”, no special equipment or modifications, or any of this nonsense. (I’ve done that). Hard pass.
Wow! A nascar driver. I hope you know what to do when that tire blows?
So move there!
Some electric cars can run backwards much faster than 31 MPG, since the electric motor uses a fixed gear ratio and has all the forward power avaliable in reverse.
I would like to have watched the tach as well.
My “go fast days” are over. I survived many 100+ mph runs on county roads and interstates as a young guy back in the 70’s. No seatbelts or helmets of course. The fastest I remember was 130 in a 74 Dodge Dart Sport w/360 4 bbl. on the interstate in the dark, not smart but fun. The other memorable run was a top end test in a 66 Fairlane GT w/390 hypo and 4 spd. We quit at 115 mph on a 2-lane county road. Again, not smart, but pretty exciting. My last 100+ run was about 15 years ago in my 02 Pontiac Grand Am GT on I-75 at night. I am all done with that now, just cool memories.
