The lawsuit filed against GM for allegedly and knowingly selling vehicles with defective transmissions entered a new phase as Eastern District of Michigan judge David Lawson granted it class action certification.
The judge certified the Speerly vs. GM lawsuit on Monday, March 20th, the Detroit Free Press reports. The suit was originally filed over a year ago in January 2022 on behalf of 39 plaintiffs in 26 U.S. states.
The class action lawsuit claims the its 8L45E and 8L90 eight-speed automatic transmissions in thirteen different GM vehicle models produced between 2015 and March 1st, 2019 are defective. The models included in the suit are listed below.
- 2015-2019 Cadillac Escalade/Cadillac Escalade ESV
- 2016-2019 Cadillac ATS
- 2016-2019 Cadillac ATS-V
- 2016-2019 Cadillac CTS
- 2016-2019 Cadillac CTS-V
- 2016-2019 Cadillac CT6
- 2015-2019 Chevrolet Silverado
- 2017-2019 Chevrolet Colorado
- 2015-2019 Chevrolet Corvette
- 2016-2019 Chevrolet Camaro
- 2017-2019 GMC Canyon
- 2015-2019 GMC Sierra
- 2015-2019 GMC Yukon/Yukon XL
The lawsuit alleges that the affected transmissions are a safety hazard because they can “slip, buck, kick, jerk and harshly engage” from time to time. This, according to the plaintiffs, “causes the vehicle to perform erratically, such as with sudden or delayed acceleration” and sometimes makes it feel as if another car collided with the vehicle when the transmission shifts.
Attorney Ted Leupold of Cohen Milstein claims GM “knowingly sold over 800,000 eight-speed transmission vehicles, which they knew to be defective,” citing the subsequent issuance of more than 60 service bulletins related to the transmissions as proof.
Leupold also alleges “dealers were directed to tell the customers that harsh shifts were ‘normal’ or ‘characteristic'” and described The General’s actions as “highly irresponsible and emblematic of what GM believes it can get away with.”
No injuries or deaths have been connected to the “startling” transmission shifts. The sudden, violent shifts and other problems allegedly result from excess friction in the torque converter caused by internal transmission fluid starvation.
The lawsuit seeks compensation for allegedly excessive payment for defective vehicles or payment for the expenses of transmission replacement. Speerly vs. GM also demands that GM reform its warranties to address these transmission problems and also issue a recall for affected vehicles.
If the torque converter problems result from a design defect and not a manufacturing defect, they are not covered by GM warranties, which currently only provide coverage against manufacturing defects. GM sought to have a similar lawsuit dismissed in August 2021 based on the problem being a design defect.
Maria Raynal, a GM representative, said in response to Monday’s class action certification that “we respectfully decline comment, as is generally our practice with ongoing litigation.”

Good.
I hope GM has to fix the issue this time instead of band aiding it. Knock on wood after a new TC and new fluid back in 2018/19 , my 17 Camaro has been fine.
Although, I always worry about the longevity. Even tho my car is low mileage.
How come my 2018 Suburban is not on the list when the others that are like it are on the list ? Mine has issues in the morning when it is cold and I’m driving slow.
Hey Allan
I have a 2016 suburban with the 6 speed transmission. It does all the things they describe in the article they even replaced the torque converter. When cold the transmission has a vibration. The mechanic blames the tires. It still misses a shift or shifts hard on occasion too. I think the class action suit should be expanded to include all chevy transmission.
The dealer will try to bring everything but a defective transmission
We have exactly the same issue in our 2016 Suburban. I just paid $7,500 for a new transmission at 85,000 miles.
I have a 2016 suburban and the transmission was replaced by dealer@99,000 miles under an extended warranty. Now 70,000 miles later I need another and they say this one is not covered to the tune of $7500. I do 90% highway driving and don’t tow with it. The dealer can’t explain and tells me it happens all then time. I personally know a half dozen people with suburbans who have had similar issue. I have had many suburbans since the 1990’s and this is the only one I have had problems with.
This is why someone should sit down with the UAW and get them to flip on the Automakers. This is craziness.
Same issue here with a 2016 Chevy Colorado, less than 50,000 miles on it. It’s going to cost me almost $4000 to get it fixed.
I just filed a formal complete with GM. I shouldn’t have to pay for this repair with such low miles on my truck. They gave me a reference number and are going to talk to the certified repair shop where my truck is sitting. Keep my expectations low, but I am hoping that GM will come through with helping on the costs.
May I ask the the phone number, department or email you used to file a complaint. I would like to do the same thing.
Don’t get your hopes up, I just had to have my transmission replaced on a 2017 Silverado with 69,000 miles. Cost me $7100. I filed a complaint with GM and went round and round with them for 2 weeks. The only thing they would offer me was $267.00 dollars (yes, that’s right). I told them to keep it. I’ll continue looking for options to get some money back, but without a lawsuit I’m sure we’re all screwed.
It was the torque converter issue that fried the transmission.
How and where did your file your complaint?
Filed my complaint, got a case # and got my truck fixed. Instead of $4000, it cost me $1200. I always had my truck serviced at an authorized GM repair shop, so that helped. I wasn’t rude with anyone, just stated the facts. Hope the fix lasts, I really like my truck.
Who did you complaint with. I do that all the time at the dealer about my 2016 GMC sierra and they don’t do anything about it
I have long history with my dealership. Worked for them once. I contacted GM. A spokesperson contacted me, he said after I paid to repair it they would consider paying half. And we have a 2018 Silverado with 74k miles and 8L90 8 speed tranny
Did GM help in the end ?
Go to let off gas pedal to slow down and it kick’s hard into lower gear , also seam’s to stutters like it is slipping from start to 40 mph . Sound like the same thing ?
I agree
Same here! I have a 2018 Suburban LT, it has the same issues!
I couldn’t even get GM to replace my 8 speed transmission 33000 miles and they just said changing the fluid and filter in it should take care of the problem. It didn’t. Now at 63,000 miles they are saying the same thing. Changing the fluid with a different type of fluid. They put it off until the warranty ran out. All the 8 speed transmission are junk.
From 2016 onward GM/Caddi has had a problem with torque converter clutch shudder in their 8 speed transmissions, the 8L45 and 8L90, along with downshift issues that feel like you’re being rearended. All supposedly taken care of by a trans fluid flush using special Mobil 1 Synthetic LV ATF HP fluid. A simply drain and fill won’t get all the contaminated fluid out. The good news is that this most often solves the problem. The bad news is that if the problem has been happening for many miles the torque converter may need replaced. But still not as costly as an entire transmission. See bulletin 18-NA-355.
I just got my 2015 Suburban back yesterday from the shop after spending $4,493.17 to replace TC, clutches and misc parts, has 96K miles, it has the 6 speed trans. Have a 2018 GMC Pu Denali with the 8 speed, so far ok, has 89k miles, it’s going into shop 11/9/23 to have trans. fluid and filter changed, shop manager says this will fix any problems down the road with the TC and clutches, we will see!
Probable like my 2015 Suburban it has a 6 speed tranny not an 8 speed. You can ck by shifting to manual M and using the plus and minus on the shifter go up as far as it will go, if it only goes up to 6 then it is a 6 spped not an 8 speed
I have a 2019 gmc 1500 elevation almost a year dealing with my transmission I am do frustrated with this
My 2019 GMC Elevation Trans just gave out. Confirmed by GM and the extended warranty company…
106,500 miles on the clock.
2017 Corvette Stingray had a violent shudder going 70 mph on highway in 2020. Had a Transmission flush and it’s 2024 ( knock on 🪵 wood) so far so good. I change all the fluids once a year and it runs great!
My 2018 Suburban had issues also and transmission went out just after it turned over 100,000 miles. I had to spend $5000 to replace it! This is bull!!!!!
Same thing happened to my Camaro. Did you get your transmission from the dealership or another shop? The dealership quoted me $8000.
2018 camaro I had a transmission flush with a Mobil 1 synthetic cost me $600, so far no shudder…but for how long
My 2023 Silverado has transmission issues when shifting between 1st and 2nd. I have been told (this is normal condition and no repair will change this condition). This is bs.
Not knowing what you mean by “issues” I’m still going to throw this out there. If you have the 8sp, 8L45 or 8L90 trans you should feel almost nothing through the gear changes. Most issues are converter clutch shutter, and harsh 2-1 downshifts. TSB 18-NA-355 covers a trans flush with new Mobil 1 ATF. Fewer issues require a software update. But keep in mind that the word around shops is that most vehicles from about 2016 up need the fluid changed at about 60K miles. Lifetime fluid is BS. There’s also a class action lawsuit against GM that’s gaining traction. Stay tuned.
my 2017 colorado has been slipping lurching since i bought it i took it back to dealer who test drove it and of course found nothing i kept a log took it back they still insisted nothing was wrong sooner or later it will fail and ill be stuck with buying a new transmission
The lawyers will get rich and the dear old consumer will get a $500 trade in voucher. That’s usually how it goes.
With Mazda we got a new transmission or 3000.
My 22 Colorado slips during the first few shifts from a cold start. They should have to warranty all the transmission’s past 100,000 miles and replace with new transmissions if they can’t repair. The entire generation of this transmission including 2020,21,22. This lesson of selling a crappie tranny should hit them financially.
Ken you knew GM had problems with this transmission and you still brought one anyway why ?? You should have brought a Tacoma or Nissan Frontier you wouldn’t have had these problems.
Thought the newer trannys were 10 speed
All the ones in vehicles with Diesels are 10 speed Allisons.
What about the rotten frames on the tacoma
I would not buy a tacoma with the engine having timing belts. I do not see why Toyota sticks with this design, especially with an interference engine.
I think Toyota will fix the frame, if they can’t fix it, they will replace it. GM would never do that.
because tacoma has engine issues and the valves are dropping out, and nissan dont get me started
I also have a 2022 Colorado and until the transmission heats up to at least 60 degrees it shifts hard from 2nd to 1st gear. Usually takes about 10 minutes to heat up then after that it shifts just fine.
How do I get my name in this.
I have a 2021 Canon Denali that has a hesitation or slip during a cold start also. After a few minutes warm up it seem to disappear during the transmission shift. The Service manager indicated it was an on going issue with the transmissions that has not been resolved at this time.
I bought a new 22 Colorado last summer had no problem till the weather got colder.i have the same 8 speed transmission. It is junk and dealer does nothing to resolve the problem.
Gm should have to replace all the defective transmissions, but with What another defective transmissions, that’s what gm would do, they are unscrupulous, they only care about short term profit, I will never buy anything from gm again, they say my GMC is professional grade, professional junk
I bought a new 22 Colorado 4×4 last summer had no problem till the weather got colder.i have the same 8 speed transmission. It is junk and dealer does nothing to resolve the problem. Has all the problems stated in this article. Why hasn’t the Colorado been added to this class action lawsuit???
The dealer will try to bring everything but a defective transmission
Chrysler finally gave up on their in house engineered automatics and went with a ZF design a few years ago. Haven’t heard about issues with their 8speeds. Maybe GM should do the same.
Your right because gm can’t make a good transmission, it seems like they can’t do anything right,
I have a 2018 sierra 5.3l with a 6 speed and it does basically all of the above described in the lawsuit. Dealer has told me twice, “that’s normal, it just has to get used to your driving habit”. Well it’s 5 years old now and still doing it, especially when cold.
GM is offering a “free” TCM reflash for the 6 speed if you take it to the dealer. It seems to have fixed mine.
Also, side note, that Sierra HD pictured at the top of the article does not have the 8 speed transmission.
Our 2016 Sierra (5.3 L:, 6-speed) with 80000 miles had its transmission completely die on a road trip 1000 miles from home. Had to have new torque converter and trans rebuild at a local shop (Arkansas), $3300. Guys told me it was a widespread problem and I should look into history of recalls, lawsuits etc.
Exact same thing happened to my 2015 Sierra. Luckily I was at home. I think its was $3600 all in with a tow.
Mark W.,
The dealership (and you) need to read the online GM Technical Service Bulletins (TSB) on these vehicles. I posted them earlier. The link is in the old comments section of GM A. Mine, a 17 2SS Camaro, had trans vibrations felt throughout the body, in the seats and steering wheel in most gears under normal accelerations and would lung out of first gear. They flushed it twice with the correct Mobil 1 synthetic trans oil (25 quarts). That took care of the vibration. The harsh shift continued thus, they changed the trans valve body unit in the transmission to alleviate the thrust. So far that worked. Time will tell. When a car is new or has had a major trans repair the onboard computer is reset by the mechanic, and it learns your driving habits and shift patterns. I’m not an engineer and thus can not go into it any more than that, but the GM trans mechanics I’ve talked with validated that for me.
If the dealership you’re going to continues to ignore your complaint, go to other dealerships until you find one that understands the issue and fixes it. Sadly, not all dealerships are the same. I hope that helps…
So the transmission have not met the expectations of some owners. No failures to do the job, no accidents, no injuries, a little harsh shifting, a little shuttering, a little hesitate, but still do the job of what the truck was built to do. So the trans not meeting the expectations of some owners. This is what I am hearing. So if you buy an auto that do not meet your expectations, you can sue. I have not heard anyone say the transmission do not work, all I hear is it do not meet my expectations.
In a premium car such as a Cadillac or a Corvette, one should not expect to experience a transmission that feels like it is going over highway rub strip surfaces when it harshly changes gears. I’ve had 4 of these 8 speeds, thinking that the newer ones would have gotten better, but they did not. The irony of this is that GM in the past has produced world-class automatic transmissions that, at one time many years ago, were used in very high-line European cars.
This is about many these owners had to replace the transmission and pay for it. Even with a full coverage warranty. It was GM bad selling tactics. They knew of the problem and are not taking responsibility for it.
The 8L90 transmission is junk. I have a 2015 GMC 1500 4×4 6.2 sitting at the transmission shop right now. It shuddered, shook, and had an issue with hard shifting soon after buying it until finally breaking down with what shop calls catastrophic transmission failure. Now it’s going to cost $8500 to replace the transmission because they’re discontinued and hard to find.
I’ve owned GM products for 30yrs but don’t plan on buying another one because this is a joke and a slap in the face of their customers
I have a 2017 GMC Sierra, Just got it back from the shop 3 weeks ago. I left my transmission on the 405 freeway 2nd lane in. Yeah just left LAX at 5:15 p.m. Great fun trying to get to the exit, didn’t make it CHP had to push up the ramp! So Dwight ( who works for GM and drives an F 150 ) Perhaps people didn’t want to rehash the unpleasant experience again.
Greetings I have a 2017 GMC Sierra too, and the transmission is given me error code P0700 and P07110 for a transmission temp sensor and a transmission module. Did the dealer fix your transmission?
Kevin R
My transmission just went on me with 86,000 miles on it. I have a 2019 Trail Boss. I complained about this to my dealer and took it in back in 2020-2021 and they stated they checked the transmission an there was no problem. So i am supposed to pay the $7,000 for a new transmission because I didn’t go to mechanic school?
I don’t know about you, but I paid a lot of money for my truck and I don’t wanna get aggravated every time I drive it you have the same attitude GM has, a transmission should not slip jerk or a bang if I want that I’ll get on the roller coaster.
I don’t know about you, but I paid a lot of money for my truck and I don’t wanna get aggravated every time I drive it you have the same attitude GM has, a transmission should not slip jerk or a bang if I want that I’ll get on the roller coaster
You must be the service manager
I TOO HAVE A 2017 CHEVY SILVERADO LTZ WITH 8 SPEED 6.2 ENGINE.I’VE BEEN COMPLAINING TO THE VARIOUS DEALERS ABOUT THIS TRANNY SINCE THE FIRST WEEK I OWNED IT.GREAT TRUCK IN EVERY OTHER WAY 19.8 MPG AROUND TOWN,28.4 ON LONG TRIP ANND 420 HP.BUT THIS TRANNY IS HORRIBLE AND THE EXCUSES THAT I WAS GIVEN ON HOW THIS ISSUE WAS “NORMAL”IS A SLAP IN THE FACE .I’VE OWNED A BODY SHOP FOR 52 YEARS AND AM NOT STUPID.HOPEFULLY GM WILL DO THE RIGHT THING AND MAKE GOOD ON A WARRANTY FOR PUTTING OUT A BAD TRANNY
GM never does the right thing they have to be forced with a class action suit
My 2017 50th Anniversary 2SS Camaro convertible, eight-speed transmission, with 6K miles had this condition. I noticed a shake or vibration during light throttle acceleration, which occurred between 25 and 75 mph at a steady state. Not during acceleration. You could actually see the tach needle move up and down in a given gear. One could also feel a constant vibration in the body, seat and steering wheel. When I noticed the condition I stopped driving the vehicle until I could get it into GM service at Randy Wise.
I was told they flushed the transmission with 25 quarts of Mobil 1 special transmission fluid (blue label not black) to remove moisture in the trans fluid and metal shavings caught in the transmission and torque converter. After the flush they filled the transmission with 10 quarts of the same transmission fluid. They went on to say If the shudder does not stop entirely after the flush or the Trans starts to jump, it is flushed up to 2 more times. Then, if not fixed, the torque converter is replaced under GM warranty. It is unclear how long GM will honor the warranty.
In 10K miles no issues are evident. I still worry this fix will not be permanent. GM should provide an extended transmission warranty to the vehicles listed in the article. Thank you for reporting on this. Had you not written the article consumers would not have known. Good job!
I have a 20-9 or st
I have a 2019 Corvette ZR1 automatic and would like regular update on this issue…
Thank You
This is scary because GM is now building knock-off Allison transmissions for their HD pickups.
I have a 2018 ATS with the 3.6 V6. I had problems with the transmission from the start. Dealer changed the fluid and put Mobil 1 in it. So far so good but should I take back to dealer over this new stuff
First time hearing about this. I had to have a new transmission installed in my 2017 GMC Yukon. Will GM refund me?
If u find out about a refund , let us know. I spent $8,000 on a new transmission in my 2019 GMC sierra
I’m having same issue with my GMC Yukon xl . just now reading this, has anything been done to fix issue.
How do you join the lawsuit?
What if I already replaced my transmission in my 2017 GMC YUKON?
I have a 2016 Suburban that had this problem costing $3,000 to fix yet it’s not mentioned as one that qualifies. Why?
Oliver 65, people on this site said the issues were fixed with the new trans fluid which I believe happened in 2019. I’ve had Nissan junk before along with rotted frames on yodas. I have 3 chevys in my garage. Iam still a fan. But if a manufacturer makes a defective part for years they should be extending the warranty on the part that seems to be failing at above average rates. Troll. Mr purple I agree with you, mine is doing the same but with slipping, but after a few minutes the transmission shifts fine. But I am concerned about this transmissions longevity and I think gm should back it with a longer warranty.
I have a 2018 Colorado WT. Had the shuttering transmission problem last year in July 2022. Cost me $780 to have the transmission fluid flushed at my local Chevy dealer even though I paid for an extended warranty. I tried getting in touch with the warranty expert at the dealer. He would not call me back. I’m waiting for the other shoe to drop. What’s next with my transmission? Is that really the fix? Am I headed for a bigger problems?
I just have to laugh at these gullible fools who bought these poorly made GM vehicles.
Consumer stupidity has consequences.
My 17 camaro got that fluid flush now it’s starting to shudder again and now it also shifts slow hope to get mine fixed or changed
My 19 Colorado has all the above problems and has been worked on 5 times. Fluid change, TC, and computer reset twice it still has the same problems.
Yes they finally said this is normal for that transmission BS. I’m currently working an lemon law attorney to try and get a resolution. I didn’t know there was a problem when I bought the vehicle. I brought back the very next day complaining.
My 2016 GMC sierra is one of theses truck that had the transmission blow out at 80,000km. GM replaced the transmission. Now the truck is starting to do the same thing again and shifts at high rpm’s. not happy with truck and will never buy another GM truck again.
Our transmission just failed coming home from a camping pulling our camper. We have a 2017 GMC Sierra 2500. Had it pulled to dealership, cost $6346 to repair and don’t you know the extended warranty ended on 9/12/23! How do we file a lawsuit or join this lawsuit,
Oh, abd we only have 50,000 miles on it.
I have a 2016 Cadillac ATS with transmission shudder and slippage. I contacted Earnhardt Cadillac Gilbert Arizona for this problem and asked if it would be repaired under the lawsuit, they told me NO, luckily I have extended warranty. Since they know this problem exists and it is there fault why are they refusing to take care of their customers and fixing the problem? DON’t buy GM is the answer I am getting!!
I have a 2016 Sierra and the Trans was replaced at 99,200 miles. The problems listed have never stopped. I was told that these things occur and nothing is wrong. Weird, i didn’t think it was normal when you’re driving in bumper to bumper traffic and you think somebody hit you from behind. Now at 205,000 miles it is about done with once again.
Being a GM guy, now retired, I have found not all dealers are equal. Some provide the correct info while others make excuses and are only interested in selling you service. Searching for the truth takes initiative and time. First I checked GM Authority and located helpful articles. Then, I went to three dealerships. I obtained hardcopy GM Technical Service Bulletins from one, so I understood the issue and remedy. Then located a dealership who fixed my transmission issue at no cost to me. Randy Wise, Clio Road, Flint, MI rocks!
Here are a couple of links that might help:
https://gmauthority.com/blog/2019/08/tsb-seems-to-fix-8-speed-automatic-gm-transmission-problems/

Good luck. Hope this helps…
I have a 2017 Chevy Colorado V6 , bought it used , it Had the Sutter thing going on, took it to a muffler shop, had the Restricted stock muffler and Resnator removed an replaced with a flow thur turbo muffler, by doing that it lowered the Transmission fluid temperature, took care of my problem, run’s a lot better also,
I really hope gm fixes this issues not only on the 8 speed but also the 6 speed trans has the same issues that bang in the shifting is messed up I know and they also have the balls to say that “it’s normal”? Yea right, thats not normal.
Ram has an 8 speed trans and it shift beautifully so no I couldn’t say that gm 8 speed hard shifting is normal,it is abnormal for sure
My 2022 GMC Sierra 4 cylinder almost breaks your neck from whiplash when it goes from first to second gear ,it has a 2 second pause and then slams into second . It does it every time I crank it . Dealer said they all do it! Sure enough I test drove three more and he was right they all did the same thing going from 1st to second gear.
I bought a 2017 Silverado Z 71 with the 8 speed tranny . Tranny went out in Nebraska on I 80. It did everything every one is saying then it straighten out and ran for about 50 more miles then blew up. Ended up getting a ride on flat back tow truck. Almost 5k later and loss of work time and that money it was fixed. Now it’s doing some of the hard shifting and gear slamming I’ve every heard. Tranny went out at 133,517 miles and now i have 156,000 miles. Tired of Chevy and will never ever but another
Almost 5000.00 to replace it and know with 156000 miles the new one is hard shifting and slamming into gears making you think you hit something. Reported it and my Chevy shop said it is normal. Say what you want about ford and dodge they don’t have these issues.
Well heck ! I just spent $8,000 on a brand new transmission for my GMC Sierra, and its on the list . hope to find out more about this recall lawsuit, and throw my name in the hat. I felt ripped off after purchasing without a warrenty and driving 3,000 miles into a dealer shop ..
I bought a 2020 Trailboss. Normally i would not buy a warranty, but i did this time. I have 41k on the truck, and have a 100k warranty. I just used the 4 month 4k mile dealer warranty to replace the radio.
I have a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 6.2, love the truck but I feel like I paid 10k dollars more than I should have with a transmission that shifts like it was made in China, I’ve owned a 1980 C10, 1998 CK series, 2012 Silverado 1500 and a 2014 suburban all of the transmissions were perfect, why with all the new technologies and modern engineering should I get this garbage?
I have a 2017 Colorado had to have torque converter replaced at 47k miles truck still shifts hard and studders when at shift points.
I to have a Chevrolet Impala 2016 I bought in 2017 within 30 days The Transmission Out 2022 again The Transmission Out are there any Recalls or Pending Court Case ?
I have a 2015 Silverado, about a month ago I had my transmission go out on me. My warranty has been expired for some time now and I was left paying 4300$ out of pocket.
How do I get reimbursed for GMs mistake?
How many miles on the truck?
How do you get in on this. I have 2016 silverado.
Just had the transmission flushed because the oil was getting black
Never flush your transmission. Just drain and refill.
could someone PLEASE comment the recourse for us poor CANADIAN owners or who to contact ….THANKS
My 2017 camaro has had this issue since the start and the comment I got was…. “It’s normal”… I’m sorry when is ever cruising thru traffic at 20 mph and it’s constantly bucking normal… let alone the stop to start jerks. Thank god this has finally come to light.
what ever happened to the 6l80 lawsuit for dieing at 70k
We have a 2019 Silverado with transmition hard shift issues Does Classaction suite include Canadians ??
2017 Yukon- Transmission went out while over 600 miles from home with 3 small kids. Went through a toll and on accelerating it started shaking and jerking. Had to get a tow that was over an hour out and a rental vehicle. Took 3 months (PARTS DELAYED DUE TO HIGH DEMAND) new transmission and a plane ticket back out there to pick it up.
Went to Earheart Cadillac Gilbert Rd. Gilbert Arizona told them my 2016 Cadillac ATS transmission, was shuddering and slipping they confirmed the problem and told me they needed to flush the transmission at a cost to me of $989.00 and told me it was not a defect but a maintenance procedure, I have worked on cars all my life and never ever heard that the transmission needed to be flushed as required maintenance and looking at the owner’s manual there is no required maintenance.
I have a 2018 gmc sierra slt the transmission just starts down shifting when I’m going down highway all the way to first gear. Had transmission flushed out 1 month ago worked fine till transmission started down shifting.
This issue seems to be impacting Suburbans as well. 2017 transmission replaced under warranty at 58k miles, then cam shaft and lifters go 14k miles later? Coincidence?? I’m no mechanic, but can’t help but think these are related. GM refuses to make it right and I am stuck with the bill. Will never buy another GM product again. Ever.
2019 Silverado. 2 trans and back out of shop and have severe shift issues again 2 days later. What attorney do I connect with. I’m sick of this 💩
Could you Google the issue on your computer? The info is there. I contacted them yesterday. While I will not join the class action, I requested to be kept informed. Again, it is sad GM is not treating their customers properly. When I worked there, “great customer service equated to renowned customer satisfaction, pride, and ultimate brand loyalty”. By GM taking this position on their 8 speed transmissions it creates just the opposite. All because of profits and greed. Good luck, Kirt.
i have 2019 silverado have viberation, shift, be going down the road and it starts shifing from high to all the way down had fluid changed new tourqe converter helped for on day then the same old crap
more and more all the the time theese transmisson problems/lawsuits ….motor problem/lawsuits make a lot of people think ..WHY.. would you ever want to buy a product from a manufacturer that a company wont stand behind in paticular when its A FACT THERE IS A MAJOR DEFECT
I Have the 2018 Denali diesel. (only drove 26K miles) Great vehicle except for the dead spot in the trans. After a slow down when I try to accelerate I sit for a second before acceleration starts. Its just not sq, my dealer said its an issue thats being worked out “through software” . We shall see! No other complaints very nice truck.
Currently driving a 2017 CHEVY SILVERADO 1500 LT. Bought the truck used.. I’ve put about 35k miles on it ( 86k total miles ) mostly highway driving. I’ve taken it to 4 different dealerships. Each one was telling me there was nothing wrong with the truck that the “shudder” and loss of power were normal for that make and model. I reached out to GM and they informed me about all the issues my year, make and model ” possible TSB’s ” that should be explored and reached out to assist in scheduling a “ride along” … we barely made it out of the parking lot and he said.. ” yup it’s your transmission… feels like it may be a bad torque converter”… only problem is the loss of power and shudder occurs when the engine is switching from V4 – V8… A mechanic friend of mine in FL said it almost sounded like failing lifters… the truck is most likely not going to make it to 100k miles. It’s a damn shame how far AMERICAN car companies have fallen… AMERICAN TAXPAYERS BAILED OUT GM AND THEY THANKED US BY SEVERELY REDUCING THE QUALITY OF THEIR PRODUCTS AND KNOWINGLY SELLING US VEHICLES THAT WILL BREAKDOWN! I URGE EVERY OWNER EXPERIENCING ISSUES TO FILE A COMPLAINT WITH NHTSA!! GM NEEDS TO ISSUE RECALLS ON EVERY VEHICLE THAT CAME OFF THE PRODUCTION LINE FROM 2014 – 2023!!!
How do I get in on the lawsuit fix? I have a 2018 Sierra that is def involved. Thank you!
Wondering the same thing. Please let me know if you find out.
I was just told today that my 2016 Yukon XL with 93K miles needs a new transmission. The only code that came up this past winter was a rough start code when it was cold. I was quoted $6,800 to replace. GMC guy said it had something to do with the transmission pump.
Is there a way to join the class action law suit??
This is horrible sucks you have to go through this.
My 2016 chevy silverado is sitting in my driveway because the transmission went out only 110,000 miles on it and it is screwed can’t believe that they have not recalled this transmission supposed to be a great truck but don’t yell you the transmission is trash. So over gm products.
It’s not just 8-speeds! My 2016 Sierra (which we love in all other respects) was just over 80K when I lost it (similar circumstances to most of the other descriptions) 800 miles from home. Guys in Arkansas fixed it…said the culprit was the torque converter and were likewise surprised that there hadn’t been a recall. Put in a new converter for $3300…and we got home OK.
My torque converter was the cause of my Transmission failing last week. 2016 GMC Yukon XL with only 93K miles. Talked to the law office that filed the class action suit. Lady said is was a bigger than they had imagined. Phone number is (561) 799-5070 for the legal office in charge of the class action suit.
My 2016 V6 Camaro with 55.000 miles is junk I can’t drive it anywhere I have a major torque converter shutter it all started after the dealer changed my transmission fluid the same second they gave it back to me
It was undrivable I don’t know if anyone can help me here but I feel scammed. I paid 300$ for the service and they returned me a broken car
My 2020 Silverado with 26k miles is at the dealership right now with transmission problems and I am being told all it needs is a fluid flush. Might be time to switch to another brand of vehicle
Bought my 2016 silverado 1500 8 months ago with 84.000 miles on it. Now at 90.700 miles transmission went out 5 days ago. Towed to dealership I bought it from. They called yesterday to say it would be $8300 to fix it. I have only had it 8 Months and put 7000 miles on it. Asked the dealership if they were going to help me with this issue because it was a issue GM has with 2015 to 2019 6L80 and 6L90. They said no. I would have to pay for everything or trad it in. They will take the price of the transmission off of the trade in price. GM need to honor these problem transmissions and torque converters that calls the transmission to go bad. I will never buy another GM EVER.
I have a 2019 Silverado with 135,000 miles that has had the same transmission issue. It began with hard downshifting and now I get the vibration when I slowly accelerate. I’ve had it back to the dealer 3 times for this issue before the warranty and extended warranty expired and was told that’s how it operates. Chevy needs to stand by their product.
I have a 2016 gmc sierra with the faulty transmission. I have the tyranny rebuilt and it’s starting to jerk in first and second gear again. I wish they would fix the issue.
I just bought a used 2019 Chevy Colorado from Auto Nation here in Houston, Texas with 45,000 miles. Didn’t notice the transmission shutter until 2 weeks after purchase and Auto Nation said I would have to contact my Chevy dealer for help. I am working with a local Chevy dealer to resolve this but I thought it was pretty shotty of Auto Nation to sell me a vehicle with known problems, never tell me about the problem during the sale, and then tell me it was my problem after the sale. I hope Chevy does the right thing in resolving these issues or I’ll buy a Toyota next time.
When you buy a used vehicle, it is bought AS IS unless stated otherwise. Even if you buy a warranty with the vehicle, the warranty is through the manufacture. I.e. GM. The lawsuit regarding the transmission passed. So now it is a matter of litigation of responsiblity. I know if GM does not fix and honor this issue. Ill file my own lawsuit to that end. To be clear. Changing then transmission fluid to the mobile 1 is not a fix. The torgue converter needs to be balanced and bearing properly.
I had to replace my transmission in my 2015 Chevrolet 1500 crew cab at a cost 3400 at Cottman transmission really upsetting. Started having problems as soon as the warranty ended
Why don’t I see the 2016 Tahoe LT on this list? I replaced my transmission a year ago, at 98k miles! The tranny mechanic said I was slipping in all 8 gears!
I have a 2016 6.2 w/ 8 speed trans. Mine started doing all of the above around 32,000. Fluid was flushed and changed at 33,000. After the fluid swap, it shifted fine for awhile. Now the hard shifting from first to second is starting to show up again. I don’t know if I should call the dealer and demand another flush and change. But at this point my power train warranty has expired. I just wish they would replace it with the new 10 speed and a re flash.
Jim W. with the 6.2L, 8 speed auto trans who had the trans oil changed at 32K. Now at 33K the hard shift returned and is out of warranty.
Join the class action lawsuit. Google it to locate.
The exact same thing happened to me at 15K. Shame on GM. And yes, I am a life long GM customer. The trans oil change is not the correct fix. Customer satisfaction and brand loyalty will suffer if they do not properly resolve the problem.
Hard not to buy another vehicle from them when they are the greatest car company in the world. They just made a BAD decision!
I have a 2106 Silverado and we reported the issue of shuddering, slipping, jerking to our certified dealer. They were “unable to duplicate the problem”. I then got stranded on the side of the road at 3am with my two very young children coming back from a trip after the dealership assured me there was nothing wrong. The transmission went out, 200 miles past warranty coverage. I never imagined having to replace the transmission 3 years new. Ended up out the cost of a hotel room, as we were still over an hour from home, the cost of a new transmission, a huge headache, and lost sleep. Absolutely ridiculous this is a known issue and those affected before “the fix” was announced weren’t compensated for GM’s negligence. I’m not out to sue anyone, not my personality. I just want them to right the wrong.
Why are the 2018 Suburbans not listed. Yet the Yukons and Escalades are listed. Pretty much the same damn thing. GM does not really care to much, they care about is money. They will sit on their asses waiting while people pay out money to fix the factory problems. A lot of people are out a lot of money already.
how does one get on the lawsuit list ?
I have a 2017 GMC Sierra with less than 50k miles on it and am experiencing the same issue. Hard shifts especially into second gear and it’s a pain especially in stop and go traffic. Also, the transmission will shudder during acceleration and when pulling a trailer. I too am being told that this is normal. Well, it is not! I’ve owned several GMC Trucks, Yukon’s and Tahoe’s and none of them have had this issue. GM should take care of their customers and replace every one of the eight speeds as it seems to be the one with the problem. I’ve trusted GM for a long time but if they don’t fix this, I’ll look at other brands next time I purchase. I know GM is to big to care but they won’t get any more of my money.
I have a 2016 Chevy Silverado LT that had its fluids flushed at 60,000 miles and now at 110,000 its giving me transmission issues, $5K to fix – overhaul. The dealer flushed the fluids and replaced, now I am being told it had a loose Line that caused the transmission computer to fried and cause the violent shifts and other problems allegedly result from excess friction in the torque converter caused by internal transmission fluid starvation. Who should be held responsible GMC in this situation or Dealer that flushed the fluids, and did not replace the pressure hose back in tight.
My transmission on my 2018 Chevy Silverado 1500 has been slipping real bad for the past 2 months. I took it to the dealership today to get it checked on and they say they found metal shavings within my transmission fluid. I’ve come upon this article because I’ve known other Chevrolet owners have had the same issue as well as the paint lawsuit for the same truck.
How do we join this lawsuit? I have a 2018 Camaro 8 speed auto transmission
I just replaced my transmission at 103,000 miles while still under extended warranty and the engine. Engine was 3rd time same problem and extended warranty covered it but transmission they wouldn’t even look at it bc of my lift even tho it is in spec of everything they say except I didn’t pay them for lift kit option and they told me they won’t cover transmission axles drive shaft gears nothing and sent a letter stating that even tho I have it for a few more months. They told me they don’t need to prove what I did to truck caused anything! Needless to say I just spent 6600 bucks on new transmission and I have the Chevy shake! Truck just got paid off is only reason I didn’t trade it in and it’s got a lot of money into it! 2015 gmc Sierra 4×4 z71 8 speed 5.3L
Horrible, gm needs to pay big time
I currently have a 2018 Silverado bought brand new. I had the rear end replaced before my factory warranty was up. I just had the transmission rebuilt and paid for it out of pocket $6000 later and about 20,000 miles it is slipping once again. These bandaids have to stop! How do you get in on this lawsuit?
Goggle it, i should come come
I have a 2020 chevy Silverado ltz 5.3L with 95k miles. I have the 8 speed transmission and it does everything described in the article. The transmission light stays on. I will be contacting the dealer on Monday to see if I can have this problem resolved
I contacted the dealership. I have to pay 5600 for the new transmission to be installed. I have an appointment July 13 to have it replaced. I thought it would cost more so I can live with the cost.
I hope they are replacing it with a better transmission and not the defective one they been using for years
My 2020 currently has 44k on it and runs fine. I bought it and purchased the extended warranty, so the powertrain will definitely be covered if this happens at 95k miles. Thing is, you have 95k on a 2020? Wow
I have read many of these posts on 8 speed trans – But a lot of the posters have over 150,000 miles on their transmission. Common sense GM not going to listen to you with high mileage, and to be honest, I would not either.
Get real man. How about a 2017, 50th Anniversary, 2SS with 6100 miles? In the dealership twice for trans shutters in many gears and once for excessively harsh shifts out of first gear. And no, my foot was not in it Just not right!
I really feel for you, i know how aggravating it is, I only have the work truck edition, gm should refund everyone 10,000
Mine started at 35K. Took it in, got it “fixed”. it didn’t fixed it. Took it in again and they told me its working as intended lol.
They can’t fix it’s garbage, they would have to replace it and you know that not going to happen, besides if they replaced it, it would be the same piece of junk
And how many times the transmission get the fluid changed?
I have a 2016 Tahoe LT. Replaced its transmission at 98k miles. I’ve now have the rough shift into 1st from reverse!
I will never never understand why gm would knowingly and willingly sell these defective transmission to their customers, they had to know these transmissions would fail, did they think people would not notice, you cannot wrong your customers, it beyond comprehension, I’ll never understand it.
“problems result from a design defect and not a manufacturing defect, they are not covered by GM warranties, which currently only provide coverage against manufacturing defects.”
So if this is what they are going to hide behind, it would explain both why they are not doing anything about it and why they kept selling the cars with this known issue. But then the real questions should be, how can a company not be liable for design defects in their cars?
Gm should be responsible no matter what, if they are using it it should be safe and reliable, gm will always try to blame someone else for a bad decision
I had to trade my 2016 Silverado in 2021 because the replacement transmission had the same issues. I went from a almost paid off to a 72 month bill.
Beck and masten north has been giving me the run around about my transmission shudder no loaner but wants to keep my vehicle for over a month to check it. Every time I go in for any kind of maintenance or oil change I complain about it they have actually not documented several of my complaints and lied to me
I had the the same issue at Lee Johnson, in Bellevue, WA.
We have a 2016 GMC Acadia with only 30,000 miles. We use mostly in summer with 6 grandkids.
This week the vehicle started having these transmission issues. In shop now awaiting estimates. Why is this vehicle not on the list?
Just got hit with a trany repair quote for my 2016 Silverado, 109k miles, and a 5-7k repair. This is BS and should be covered by GM, it always seems to fall on the back of the consumer who unknowingly purchases what they believe to be a great vehicle. Time to start looking at other manufacturers products if GM decides it’s not worth their time to do the right thing.
My 2018 Chevrolet Silverado with 80,000 miles transmission has gone out. It should be included in the recall.
I have a 2016 Tahoe LT, my tranny went out at 98,000 miles, the mechanic at the GMC dealership in Birmingham, AL, said I was slipping in every gear! That cost me $6,600 to replace the tranny! And the new one almost immediately started popping into first gear from reverse!
GM is going to have to expand their recall else they’re going to lose a huge customer base! A loyal customer base too from the comments I’ve been reading!
There may be a legitimate problem with GM 8-speed trans, BUT when these trucks owners with 150,000 to 250,000 miles jump on the band wagon complaints, this weakens their case. It improves GM defensive arguments that the trans is good. I just find it hard to articulate a truck owner swiveling that his trans is having problems after he has put 150,000 miles on it. Hell it is time to start having issues with your automobile after 150,000 miles. I drive an average 15,000 a year, so after 10 years , I start to have shakes in my trans, I should tell the manufacturer that the trans in my auto is a bad manufactured trans. I guess I should tell my tire, my muffler, my alternator, my starter, my battery, my air conditioner, etc. etc. that this is a bad manufactured product because I can not get 250,000 and 15 years of service without maintenance.
You might be a lucky one, but if you read all the comments you will maybe understand, mine started to slip after a few days 2018 gmc canyon brand new, dealer says it’s a characteristic. BS, than it started to do the shutter like you were driving over a washboard Road, dealership said the factory put in the wrong transmission fluid, that seems OK for now but the slipping continues it gets worse and worse, why some of them do it and some don’t it’s still a problem. I’m glad you’re one of the lucky ones. my friend bought a 2019 Colorado he was making fun of me says I’m real picky then his his started to the same thing the shattering and slipping,
Bruce re-read my comment. My comment says there may be a legimate problem with the trans, BUT when all these truck owners with over 150,000 miles on their trucks jump on the complaints list this weaken the case, and strengthen GM case. GM can now say LOOK over 10 million truck owners has gotten 200,000 miles out of the Trans and now want a new tranmission.
Yes driving 150k miles in a1970’s vehicle was excellent results!! But these aren’t your typical 1970’s style vehicles either! They are built to withstand mileage far exceeding >750k miles!
So, experiencing transmission failures at 98k miles is both disturbing & confusing! Then, learning that GM exec’s knew before selling these vehicles of this transmission issue is something I can’t agree with! And they should make it right!
I am interested in people with the 8spd and how many miles they have . I I have the 22 Colorado and have had some shifting issues from the first few miles but would like to hear some positive experiences with this transmission because I like almost everything about my my truck and really don’t want to buy a new one when the warranty is up.
I’m having the same problem with my 2019 Chevy Silverado custom trail boss !! The transmission bucks and kicks and then today in went into gear delayed while accelerating. How do I get in on this class action lawsuit
Looking at buying a 2021 1500LT 5.3 8 speed. It shuddered on the test drive a couple times. Is it included in this lawsuit deal?
83000- miles. VIN #1GCUYDED3MZ215760
No lawsuit yet I have the same problem dealership avoids it and wants you to leave the vehicle there for at least a month or more with no loaner
I have a 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 5.3 liter v8. That has been giving me alot of problems with the transmission, ESC light, and brake service light. I am still have alot of problems. Seems Like i have problems with the truck everyday
2016 gmc Yukon xl Denali 4×4
Had the vibration at low rpm acceleration and a hard shift from 1st to 2nd gear. Vibration could be felt throughout the vehicle. Took it to gm shop. They replaced the trans fluid with the new mobile1 and replaced the transmission temp sensor wiring harness. Tho oil replacement was for the vibration and the wiring harness was for the hard shift. Said the temp sensor wiring harness also has wires for the transmission valve body. Fixed all the issues. It now shifts so smooth you can’t even feel it. Just see the rpms move on the tach. Cost me about $1000. Vehicle now has 150k miles and no issues. The 6.2 engine has never had anything except an oil change done to it.
2018 Chevrolet Silverado transmission is going out at 85,000 miles Chevrolet should do something about this they should help !
Transmission is being replaced at a cost to meet a $5000
I bought a 2022 Canyon last Sep…7 months later and 14 trips to the dealer, GM agreed to replace transmission with remanufactured transmission…now 2nd transmission is doing same problems as first transmission and Dealer says 2nd transmission is working fine. Now i get to play the back and forth game for the next 7 months and see what happens. I WILL NEVER BUY GM EVER AGAIN. THIS WAS MY FIRST GM AND IT WILL BE MY LAST!

How do you get in on the lawsuit?
This is ridiculous. How can they sell trucks and cars with faulty transmissions and expect to not be held reliable especially when some of us has spent over $50,000 for a Dinali truck and then put $15,000 worth of aftermarket parts on it, and told that there’s no recall or warranty!
I purchased a 2015 High Country Chevy Silverado new with the 8 speed transmission and the first month the dealer called it back in for a transmission adjustment and it has given problems ever sence. It shifts rough and has all the problems listed in this article. Vibrations at and over 50 mph jerks when shifting and once it jumped forward and almost caused me to hit another vehicle. I have had it back to the dealer and just like this article say they told me that’s the way it’s supposed to do and it’s a smart transmission and it will learn your driving habits and get better. It didn’t.
Ive had my 2019 Chevy Silverado 1500 LT 5.3 for almost 3 years. I took it in numerous times. Only for the dealership to te me nothing is wrong. The jerking and everything started at about 40k miles. Dealership couldnt help me. Me and my family have always been a chevy family. Grandparents, parents, and me. Ive always backed chevy. But this is embarrasing. I want a REAL chevy truck!
GM should have went bankrupt back in 2008 instead of receiveing a bailout. They would have at least been forced to focus on the consumer vs the politicians…
2017 Silverado with 83000 miles in the shop now waiting for $7000 transmission work to be completed. Getting my ducks in a row before I contact the lawyers in Michigan that are doing the class action lawsuit against GM. I have been a loyal Silverado owner since 2002, but I will never own another GM vehicle.
What lawyers are doing the class action? I think all of us should look into that.
Yes call them!!
How do we notify them if our vehicle is doing the same. 2017 GMV Yukon XL
I have a 2018 Sierra with a burnt up transmission and the Extended warranty is trying to get out of paying for with only 94k miles
2016 #GMCYukonXL with 2 FAILED TRANSMISSIONS in 7 years, 3rd already slipping and jumping into gear.
@GMC refused to offer any solution three times. Do better! Purchased from Enterprise car sales.
We purchased a 2016 #GMCYukonXL in 2017 from Enterprise Car Sales with only 36,000 miles on it.
Since then, it has needed 2 transmissions (1st under warranty had 55K miles, 2nd $8000 had 84K miles), 2 door handles replaced, new air-conditioning system, and 2 broken taillights ($800 each).
I have never heard of a vehicle only 7 YEARS OLD, needing two transmissions. 2nd transmission is already slipping and jumping into gear, 2 months later. When the 2nd transmission broke, it was the end of the day, in a remote area of Arkansas, no cellphone reception, scorching temperatures, family (wife and two little kids) stranded as we traveled across country.
Wow…look at how many people have the same problem. Shame on you GMC
Ok ya all, we all know that GM has tranny problems with the 6 and 8 speed trans. How do you get in the class action lawsuit? Lots of talkers but no suggestions to get included. I have three, a 2015 Caddy CTS with no symptoms yet, a 2015 Suburban LTZ with a 6 speed going to the shop Monday Oct 30 for a complete overhaul repair est $4,200 and a 2018 GMC Sierra Denali Pu with the 8 speed no symptoms yet. So who do you contact to get included?
have a 2017 Silverado and a 2018 GMC Sierra , both have had the transmission problems , the 2017 they replaced the transmission there were metal shavings all in the trans oil, The 2018 they claimed all it needed was a flush and fluid change and it would be fixed , fast forward a year later , doing it all over again and now they claim its 1100 miles out of warranty sorry.
Spent 50k on my 2019 sierra and shortly after the truck started lurking jerking knocking . Sounds like a lumber wagon . Bet GMC CEO would not drive this truck. Lemon deal for sure.
I have a 2017 gmc sierra slt all terrain and I experience the same problem when one of the injectors when bad, the truck start shaking so bad because the injectors and after that I noticed problem with the transmission, just last night driving back from work I feel like if one of tires has a bump at 45 mph but if I accelerate the vibration goes away. And also when truck is could it feels like the transmission won’t shift after it worms up feel better. By the way my truck is only 20k miles. And start going bad 5k miles ago.
I have a 2020 Silverado only 60,000 miles and transmission took a dump. Warranty cover it but only cover 7 days rental but I’ve been out a truck for 3weeks and they don’t know when I will get a transmission. This is bull$hit. 3 yrs and transmission done and far less now
I went 6 weeks without a truck back in March, I t was a 2022.
How do I become part of this lawsuit? I have a 2017 GMC Sierra Denali that is having this problem. The dealership is giving me the run around. I want it fixed.
Contact Ted Leopold at Cohen & Milstein
Sandi, I too would like to know how to join, I am sure there is a lawyer or firm handling the suit, I am sure too that you must sign up to be included, no where on this chat sight have I seen a link or website to join or anyone giving that info. I just had my 2015 Suburban XLT 6 speed with 97k miles repaired last week at a cost of $4500. I also have a 2018 GMC Denali PU with the 8 speed, just spent $225.00 this week to have fluid and filter changed. So far it hasn’t given me any problems has 89k miles.

I read one article that said people might only get $2700.00 each out this. Not sure it’s true or not
Well folks looks like alot of us are to put it nicely..screwed. I just got off the phone with the attorney handling the GM lawsuit. If you didn’t purchase your vehicle from a GM dealer either new or used you can’t get in the suit, also if your tranny is a 6 speed which one of mine is (2015 Suburban XLT) even though it has the same problem and it just cost me $4500 to repair, it also isn’t in the suit. Only GM 8 speeds are in the suit according to the attorney. My 2018 GMC Denali with the 8 speed I just bought, isn’t covered either because I purchased it used from a Nissan dealership, even though it has the shift problem also. Again, the attorneys and GM get rich and we the consumer get the proverbial shaft!
Would you be able to send me the name and # of the lawyer handling the suit? I have the same problem? Have an 8 speed 2018 camaro with the shudder issues. Replaced the tranny fluid and seems better $500 later.
Andrew
I spoke to Attorney with Gordon Partners law firm in Florida, they are Co-counsel with Cohen Milstein Attorneys. The number is 561-515-1400 or go to Cohen Milstein website and fill out the contact us form.
Gordon Partners Attorneys number is 561-333-3333.
We have a 2015 Chevy Silverado that had to have a transmission replaced, cost me 5000. I want my money back.
What a piece of crap this truck is. What do I do now???
You need to find out first if your tranny is a 6 speed or a 8 speed. If it is a 6 speed you are like me SOL. If it is an 8 speed and you live in one of the 26 states in the class action lawsuit area file with Cohen Milstein Attorney, go to the website and fill out their form, they will call you for more info, they called me the next day.
I have a 2016 Chevy Silverado with transmission problems from day one. Dealer ship said nothing wrong for three years until the warranty went out.
Thomas
I have a 2017 Silverado that will scare you when it shifts. I have put it in the shop to see if it could be fixed. They told me that it shifted fine when they drove it, but the adjusted the shift point. That seemed to help ever so slightly. I found out from searching on the internet that they were recalling and changing the transmission fluid. I went to my local GM dealer and asked him about the recall. He confirmed that they were recalling. I asked him why he had not notified me of the recall, he nothing to say. It still shifts hard and started have what they call shuttering in the transmission. My transmission will shift hard when you accelerate or when it down shifts. Most of the time when it does this you wonder how long the ring gear and pinion will hold up.
How do I get involved in this class action lawsuit? I have a 2017 GMC Sierra with 47k miles needed a new torque converter and transmission still doesn’t seem right
I did the same on my 2017 yukon and a year later they replaced gears and its still rumbles occasionally
Since my 2016 Colorado was out of warranty, but low miles, I filed a formal complaint with GM. They gave me a case number and worked with my certified GM repair shop which got my repair cost down from $4000 to $1200.
2021 camaro under 20k miles is in the dealership shop as i type for a “transmission pump” car started making a static or popcorn popping sound.. performance was effected. battery was trying to die and then my hazards and turn signal starting coming on and off while the car was on of off by themselves.
had my car two weeks and still nothing done on it and they state a transmission pump but im starting to think its also a torque converter. does either of those parts effect electrical?
I have a 2019 Colorado, nothing but trouble. fluid flush, TC changed and the shudder has re-appeared. GM;s mission statement is a farce
2017 yukon XL, new transmission at 121k, now at 176k its in the shop again. Did this lawsuit ever resolve?
2018 Silverado 1500. Rough shifting and sometimes makes a loud snapping sound during shifting. Hasnt broken down yet, but I knew it wasnt normal for it to do that. I didnt know who to report this to. I have also had trouble with the fuel pump from the start.
I have had 6 fuel pumps replaced annually to date. I have been a Chevy owner most of my life and no problems with previous vehicles. At the time of purchase, I was told this particular vehicle was the only one available to me.
Changing to new type fluid Hp blue label, helped my truck a lot also changed filter and temperature sensor in transmission
I have a 2017 Yukon XL 6-speed, the transmission was repaired at 35,000 mi, gears 4, 5 and 6. Now at 134,000 mi first gear is shot. I was told there was 100,000 mile warranty after the 35,000 mile repair, but of course now I’m being told that was only good for 3 years. For 3 years during covid no one drove their cars! My GM dealer won’t even call me back. GM is a disgrace.
I just went thorough this. Replaced transmission and less than 50k later gears 4-6 replaced. Mine was under warranty still with $2600 worth of work for those gears.
The 6 speed is not in the class action lawsuit, only the 8 speed transmissions. That’s what I was told by the class action attorneys. Also you have to have purchased your vehicle new from a GM dealer. Used vehicles are not included, you have to be the original owner, but again it has to be an 8 speed, not a 6 speed.
I have problem with a brand new chevy traverse 2023 10k miles horrible GMc told me it was the valve body it was change. Couple days later they tell me it’s doing the same thing issue not fixed. Truck been in the shop for over a week
You see that’s their secret! They know there’s nothing they can do so sooner or later you’re going to come & get it cause you can’t afford to be without it!
Isn’t that a 9 spd. Still not good! More QC issues, go Union
I just paid $6680 to have a new transmission installed in a 2016 Silverado with 71400 miles. Totally absurd.
My 2022 GMC sierra limited 3.0 Duramax does same thing it jerks and bucks. I payed for 2 Transmission in my 2014 Chevy Silverado but it was in 7 times for replacement. My 2022 GMC is nothing but trouble way to many issues to list and no help from dealer or 1800 GMC I’m so at a loss so bent over.
2017 Chevrolet Silverado. New torque converter. flushed 3 times. Fast learn twice. New harness. Now valve body will be new if the dealership I bought it from honors their lifetime powertrain warranty. 67500 miles.
I had 2017 Silverado 1500 with the 6 speed. I purchased brand new. Crazy enough I worked for the torque converter manufacturer but my facility made the Ford and Allison TCs. I got my truck up to 55,000 miles and it start shifting hard from first to second and the second to first. The dealer I purchased the truck from had me flush the transmission and flash it. I was told to drive it for 5,000 miles and let them know how it was. At around 61,000 miles the issue came back but at that point GM changed the recommendation for the flush to a Mobil One product so again I paid to get it flushed. I got to 70,000 miles and it started again so I went to the dealer and lost my cool with them. They couldn’t do anything because GM had no other recommendations. (This was in 2019-2020, I drive 36,000 miles a year). I called GM and left the dealership a zero star review and told them that I was not happy with the service I received. I was recommended to go to another dealer in the area that had a high star rating for service. When I got to the new dealership they were upset that I did not get the service I needed. I paid for the 100,000 mile warranty but Allstate would only cover $800 worth of the $6000 rebuilt. The transmission tech at the new shop told me to just drive it til it goes out since I would basically have to pay 100% of it. I had it flushed two more times between 71,000 to 125,000 miles. The dealer gave me a break but it should’ve been free. The transmission fluid looked like chocolate milk. Fast forward to 128,000 miles my transmission went out while sitting at a stop light on a state route. The repairs cost $6,000 and the cost of a rental for 3 weeks. (I did not have a third car). The truck ran great when I got it back and I was very happy. BUT at 160,000 miles it started to do it again. That was only 32,000 miles in for the rebuilt transmission. I said screw it, the rebuilt transmission came with a 3 year 100,000 mile warranty. So I decided to just drive it until the shifting became more frequent. At 175,000 miles it started to shift hard but this time from second to third and visa versa. I had it flushed and it ran well again until 182,000 miles. At that point I was done. I drove it to the dealer and had them give me a trade in value quote. The truck was 6 years old with 180,000 miles on it. They offered me $11,400, I was not sure if I wanted to get rid of it since I used it all the time so I left. On the way home that afternoon I was going a round a roundabout and the truck would not shift into 3rd. I turned it off and turned it back on then it was good. I got to work the next morning and the truck was shifting funny but it was shift in all gears. Then I went to go home and the truck was stuck in reduced power mode. It would not go over 45 miles an hour. I had it towed out to the GM dealer and went in the next day and sold it to them for the trade in value. GM does not
That’s my 2017 Yukon exactly.. after transmission rebuilt it did the wouldn’t shift to 3rd gear. They rebuilt about 10k ago. I’m at 180k now and trying to make some decisions.
These transmissions now have BILLIONS and BILLIONS and BILLIONS and BILLIONS of driven miles on them. This is what GM will say in court. They have proven to be GREAT TRANSMISSIONS. This is what GM will bring to court.
What do we do now? I have the 2016 ATS 2.0T with transmission problems that the dealer refused to take responsibility for
Drew Macho, you may have overpaid the GM dealership $800 for a transmission oil flush and change. According to GM’s technical service spec manual, dealers are instructed to change and flush the transmission oil three times with the proper Mobil 1 synthetic trans oil. (Go to your GM dealership and ask for all service tech reports on the shutter and lunge issues.) If this doesn’t solve the problem, they should replace the converter and/or the transmission body valves. In my case, after three oil changes and flushes at 17K miles, my 2017 2SS Chevy Camaro auto trans shutter and lunge problem were still not resolved, so Randy Wise Chevrolet in Flint, MI (a great dealership), replaced the transmission body valves, which fixed the issue at least for now. Questions, ask.
Hey William, the dealership refused to replace the tranny fluid for free, had to go to a mechanic to do it. Not sure if it’s different in the states, I’m in Ontario, Canada and the Chevy dealers here won’t do anything about the shudder without enormous prices.
Drew Macho, call Chevrolet HQ in the US. Can not believe Canada Chevrolet dealers would have different technical service bullitins than Chevrolet US. Same vehicles, engines, and trans basically. I would think they would be the same and any Chevrolet dealership service manager or rep could give them to you. They are on their computers. If your dealership is uncooperative, go to another dealership somewhere else. Not my expertise. Best quess.
Thank you William, I will follow up with them
Finally got the warranty company to give me a new transmission after 4 years of complaining. Pretty sad needing a new transmission after only 68k miles.
I have a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado crew cab V8 and at 96,000 miles had to replace my entire transmission due to the torque converter. Going out with NO warnings at all. No dash lights no transmission slipping nothing it took two weeks to diagnose the problem because the truck was throwing 27 different codes, and neither code. Had anything to do with the transmission at first I had to replace the mass airflow sensor. They had thought that this was the issue 500+ dollars later found out it was the torque converter shutter and it had already shared metal throughout my entire transmission “ note” the truck was not being driven throughout this. Except for from one mechanic to the other which includes the Chevrolet dealership, themselves . so from the time the issue started which was idling low, could not feel shift when truck was put into gear and jerking to the time that it was found to be the torque converter shutter and it had sheared metal throughout the entire transmission. The truck had only been driven, approximately 12 miles GM preapproved paying 40% of the cost then at the time , the truck was finished. I had the transmission rebuilt with their updated parts. This is six weeks later having to wait for parts have transmission, rebuilt, etc. GM backed out of paying anything and I had to pay the full cost a completely rebuilt transmission mass airflow sensor, etc..
My 2015 Chevrolet 1500 needs a torque converter because it feels like driving over a rumble strip at low acceleration. Here’s the problem… Gm doesn’t even have any to replace it with and now unless I use an aftermarket TC ( my mechanic told me don’t do it) So now I’m down a truck until GM make some more TC’s.
You think it might be a problem if they can’t make them fast enough?
I also have an 18 Sierra and a 16 Sierra, which the latter has already had the trans replaced at 120K for $7000.
The 18 has had the chevy shake since it was new and had it back 3 times to no avail. Now after reading many blogs, I know it’s a poorly designed driveshaft meant to give better mileage.
And lets not mention the AC condenser issue, tens of thousands of these have failed and my 15 and 16 included. Just waiting for the 18 to fail next.
I’m a dam fool for loving these Chevys because the older 4 speeds were tough as nails.
After reading this blog, they are all up for sale and my love will be hate because GM won’t stand behind the mistake they made and keeps on selling these knowing they are ripping off good Americans of their hard earned cash.
Total BS. Going to try a new ram as soon as I can sell these pieces of chit.
This is the reason why after being a die hard silverado owner for 22 years I have bought my first ever 2024 Toyota Tundra. $7500 later after replacing my 2017 transmission with only 83,000 miles on it I switched. I will never buy a GM product again.
Luckily the dealership I bought my 2017 from had a lifetime powertrain warranty. 250$ deductible and it goes on next week. 🤞 all goes well and I don’t get another $hitty tranny.
Donnie u might get 40,000 miles if you’re lucky
It’ll be traded in by then
We have a 2020 GMC Sierra that is doing the same thing! Are we sure this is only up to 2019? How can we get more information? We bought it used with 13k miles and have had it in the shop 4 times for this issue. GM states they can’t recreate the issue and basically dismisses our claims each time!
I have a chevy silverado 2022 and I notice that the transmission start to have problems, so I notify to the dealer months ago, they said all is good, but last time when I took to regular service I told them that the transmission have a hard knock when I stop the truck, they check and said that is metal mixing e with the oil and I will need a new transmission. Truck have only 66k miles. How I can check if my truck apply for this lawsuit recall?
My 2015 Sierra had been experiencing all these issues until it finally broke down and no longer shifts into gear, making it undrivable. I took it to the shop and was given a $5,000 repair estimate. Not only will I have to pay for the repairs, but I also have to spend money on a rental while my vehicle is in the shop for 3-4 days.
I bought the extended warranty through the dealership on my 2020 Silverado. They rebuilt the transmission once already and they had my truck for 3 weeks. I got it back and it ran for a month. Now it’s the Valve body and they blame GM for this issue. No parts. NO LOANER vehicles because so many are in the shop for the same reason. It only has 63k miles on it. I have been without my truck for 7 weeks now going on 8. A total of 10 weeks. I have to carpool with my wife to work every day to and from work. They can’t even give me a date for when GM will give them the part. I still have to make payments and keep insurance on a truck that I can’t even drive, and the dealership will not compensate me in any way. Beyond frustrating.
