Here Are All The C8 Corvette Speed Limitation Conditions

While the Chevy C8 Corvette is built to be a hard-charging sports car with the new 2025 Corvette ZR1 capable of reaching 233 miles per hour, there are multiple situations in which electronic limiters will switch on, holding the Vette to a much lower maximum speed.

GM notes that there are 10 different situations in which the top speed of a Corvette will be electronically limited, sometimes to as little as 2 mph. The table below shows all the circumstances in which this can occur and the limits set to speed:

C8 Chevrolet Corvette Speed Limitations
Speed Limitation System Reason
155 mph / 250 km/h Folding Top Folding top open and properly stowed
99 mph / 160 km/h Loss of Module Communication General loss of communication between modules
85 mph / 136 km/h Teen Driver / Valet Mode Teen Driver or Valet Mode active (acceleration also limited)
85 mph / 136 km/h Suspension Suspension control module in full soft mode due to a system fault
82 mph / 132 km/h Loss of OnStar Communication Loss of communication with the OnStar module
62 mph / 100 km/h Brakes Brake hydraulic fluid leak detected
58 mph / 93 km/h Folding Top Folding top not secured
26 mph / 42 km/h Hood Front compartment (hood) not secured
15 mph / 24 km/h Shuttle Mode (E-Ray) Shuttle Mode active
2 mph / 3 km/h OnStar OnStar Stolen Vehicle active

The limits on the Chevy Corvette‘s speed will be in place until the condition causing the limit is removed or corrected. A “speed limited” message may or may not appear on the instrument panel depending on the exact circumstances. However, the electronic limitation of 2020 through 2025 Chevy Corvette units will not set a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) when it occurs.

This information differs slightly from previous data provided through the vehicles themselves. Warning messages appearing on the driver’s display of the 2020 Corvette Stingray indicated electronic speed limitation at 82 mph when the hood of the front trunk is ajar. The new information, however, says that an unlatched front hood will lead to a 26 mph maximum speed.

In the same year, GM confirmed a 194 mph top speed for the Chevy Corvette Stingray. The 2023 Corvette Z06 is barely faster at 195 mph, while its maximum speed declines to 188 mph with the Z07 Performance Package installed because of the downforce generated. Both are nearly 40 mph slower than the new ZR1 variant.

The Stingray cradles the 6.2L LT2 V8 engine developing 490 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque in base form, the Z06 is motivated by the 5.5L LT6 V8 engine cranking out 670 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque, while the ZR1 features the twin-turbocharged 5.5L V8 LT7 gasoline engine blasting out 1,064 horsepower and 828 pound-feet of torque.

  1. 85 mph for teen drivers? Are we talking 16 year olds or 19 year old?
And folks wonder why insurance rates are going up.
