GM sales increased by 24 percent to 555,580 units during the third quarter of 2022 in the United States market. Sales increased at the Chevrolet, Cadillac and GMC brands, while decreasing at Buick.
“The design, technology and manufacturing investments we have made are helping us meet strong customer demand for our products, and they’ve translated into sales leadership in some of the industry’s most important segments,” said Steve Carlisle, GM executive vice president and president, GM North America. “We are being very intentional in the way we are executing our EV strategy to position the company for the same kind of success that we’ve earned with today’s pickups and SUVs, and with supercars like the Chevrolet Corvette,” he added.

" 'The design, technology and manufacturing investments we have made are helping us meet strong customer demand for our products, and they’ve translated into sales leadership in some of the industry’s most important segments,” said Steve Carlisle' "
And:
"Sales increased at the Chevrolet, Cadillac and GMC brands, while decreasing at Buick."
In other words, we don't give a rats behind about cars/sedans and even though Buick is literally dying on the vine, that's ok because the other brands are thriving. In another article on GMA a few weeks ago, they claimed that Buick is not seeing the past/current sedan owners in their showrooms buying the crossovers. Hmm.
Simple solution: in order to keep the Malibu alive, keep the plant going with more work while actually giving Buick something more than another box on wheels, give Buick a Regal version of the Malibu. Then give them a version of the Cadillac CT4 and/or CT5. Everyone wins and the first line of this article could easily have said "sales increased at Chevrolet, Cadillac, GMC and Buick."
I will say in my experience, it's true about Buick. Buick used to be the "old person car" you would get stuck behind. Now "the old person car" is a Honda CRV or similar CUV. Almost every old lady here has one and you can't go anywhere without getting stuck behind her.
Give Buick a RWD platform shared with GMC for both a car and crossover. Let Chevy have the FWD Chinese platform.
They definitely need to give Buick a full lineup, not just crossovers copied at different scales. That said, I do like the Envision's design a lot. I'm surpirsed they never gave Buick a version of the Tahoe/Suburban as a different taste, let Chevy by the budget option, GMC be the offroad option, Cadillac the Sporty, edgy design and Buick be about luxury, elegance, comfort. They do need Sedans too, A slightly smaller Malibu like the 2010-2017 Regal vs 2013-2015 Malibu, and a more premium CT5 platform mate, and then stretch it and call it a Roadmaster, give it the 2.7T, a 6.2 option and the 3.0L Duramax and it will sell.
SwingAndMiss: Not sure what you are talking about. The Malibu is an American brand, by an American company and assembled in the USA. It's one of the main reasons I got mine. Buick doesn't need anything from GMC that is truck based. They are already failing to maintain market share let alone increase it. Plus, Buick mostly shares showrooms with GMC already.
Giving Buick a Regal based on the Malibu would be easier and make perfect sense. Plus, GM already has the RWD/AWD platform with the Cadillac CT4/CT5. Again, it would be easier and faster for them to utilize those for a higher end Buick sedan while still offering something from an American company that is assembled in the USA. Like I said above, a win-win for all. They just need to make that decision that Buick shouldn't be an SUV only brand.
VSS-F was developed in China.
Ok then. And I thought I was bad.
You do realize that weather you or I like it, it's now a world market and R & D (by all brands) is done all over the world, don't you? Yes, I prefer my vehicles to be GM and assembled in the USA. But my second choice is GM assembled at one of their factories in a partner country. I also dislike Japanese brands, even if they are assembled in the USA. But even I wouldn't take it that far.
Previous 2 Malibu sedans were based on Regal AKA Opel Insignia. China will certainly need another Regal so this is an easy design.
Since 2008 they've really just been variants on the same platform with Buick getting better struts.
But CV k is dying and we are far from a GM renaissance
Sales up over very weak Q3 in 2021. Sales down from Q2 2022. Lyric Q4 sales to be up on Q3, which was only 36 vehicles.
All very disappointing in my view. It will be interesting to hear what they have to say at their earnings release.
What is "very disappointing" about the quarter, they sold every vehicle they could make?
Nice sales numbers from GM! Good to see the Bolt moving metal. Malibu sales rocketing upwards as more cars become available in this time of high fuel prices. Cadillac not doing badly either. Troubling numbers for the Trailblazer, dont know whats happening there with that small CUV. Nearly the whole Buick lineup is suffering sales loss, couldn't be people want sedans again?
The Trailblazer sales numbers are due to lack of inventory. They are selling about as fast as the arrive.
Yep, found out that's the problem with them and probably the Buick crossovers also.
A 37% increase of a small number is still a small number. There’s still almost no inventory here in my free red state. I stopped by a local dealer on the Saturday before last and he had 3 Silverados on the lot, 2-1500’s and 1-2500 and 5 more in transit. Half were 4 bangers that no one wants.
A 24% increase of a small number is still a small number. I visited a local dealer two Saturdays ago and he had 3 Silverados with 5 more in transit, half were 4 bangers that no one wants.
I am guessing that the 2023 Colorado sales will be high and will take those highly capable 2.7L turbo production.
If I was in the market for a Silverado 1500 a tan Custom Trail Boss with the 2.7L turbo would suffice. I really can't argue against a 310hp/430ft/lb mill if the 5.3L V8 isn't available or too expensive.
I agree they would do well in the Colorados.
Check on https://www.buick.com.cn/lacrosse
The Buick LaCrosse is still based on the Malibu architecture (extended base - E2LB), just as Dan B suggests, and it is a very nice car
This is what it reads in their front web page advertisement:
The 652T model is equipped with a 2.0T variable cylinder turbocharged engine, which has surging power and agile response.
The 552T model is equipped with a 1.5T SIDI turbocharged engine which achieves a high balance between fuel economy and strong power.
The whole series comes standard with a 9-speed Hydra-Matic intelligent transmission which has become a model of efficient power
The Regal is the short base (E2SB) and has the same powertrain options.
Even look at the Verano, based on the GEM architecture, looks nice. It has the 1.5T + CVT.
Sorry to say it but the Chinese folks have done an amazing job in "sticking to the brand" that was given by GM North America back in the 90's. They have given the customer respect every step of evolution and now it is almost a brand of its own. It would not surprise me that soon it will only be marketed in China.
I wished they would offer that here. I would buy one tomorrow.
