2022 Chevy Silverado Gets New Diesel Off-Road Package

General Motors revealed the refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado last September, pulling the covers on a long list of updates and changes for the popular light-duty pickup truck. As before, the Chevy Silverado offers a range of features and optional equipment to help it conquer the rough stuff, but now, GM Authority has learned that the refreshed Silverado will offer a new diesel off-road package.

According to GM Authority sources, the new Diesel Off-Road Package will be offered on LT and RST trim levels. The refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado’s Diesel Off-Road Package is tagged with RPO code B4U, and includes the following content (relevant RPO code listed in parentheses):

  • 3.73 axle ratio (GT4)
  • LT275/65R18C MT Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac blackwall tires (R3O)
  • Chrome assist steps (BVT)
  • Hard-folding tonneau cover (VOZ)

The new 2022 Chevy Silverado Diesel Off-Road Package requires four-wheel drive, as well as the Crew Cab body style, the Z71 Off-Road package, and, obviously, the 3.0L I6 LM2 turbodiesel Duramax engine. As a reminder, the LM2 diesel engine produces 277 horsepower at 3,750 rpm and 460 pound-feet of torque at 1,500 rpm.

The new Diesel Off-Road Package is not available in conjunction with any of the following:

  • Max Trailering Package (NHT)
  • Snow Plow Prep Package (VYU)
  • Rally Edition (STH, RST only)
  • Z71 Off-Road and Protection Package (PDZ)

Pricing for the package is unknown at this time.

In addition to the LM2 diesel engine, the refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 is also offered with the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine, now uprated to produce 430 pound-feet of torque, as well as the naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L84 gasoline engine and naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine. Under the skin, the Silverado rides on the GM T1 platform, with production taking place at the GM Silao Plant in Mexico, the GM Fort Wayne Assembly facility in Indiana, and the GM Oshawa Plant in Canada.

  1. No dual exhaust with 3.73 max tow package. Dual exhaust should be standard on everything except the base 2.7 engine and WT trim

    1. You want side exhaust while towing. Last thing you want is the front of your trailer looking like the inside of your pipes.

      1. Someone has said that on here before and that’s complete rubbish

      2. There is also a much greater chance of drone with dual exhaust if you’re towing due to the sound /exhaust bouncing off your trailer.

You don’t want dual exhaust while towing with a diesel for both reasons.

      4. I have dual exhaust with my duramax and never had soot issues with my travel trailer or any drone for that matter. This isn’t the 6.6 where most have modded tunes and straight pipe exhausts.

    2. It’s a turbocharged inline 6 cylinder motor, what would dual exhaust do for you?

      1. Aesthetics. Especially on the RST.

  2. Diesel Offroad package…. and why is this not available on the AT4 or Trailboss? Makes no sense.
Buy a lower trim package and you can get the 3.73 gearing, but its not available in an actual off-road model. Who is making decisions over there?

    Reply
    1. Because the ones in the higher trims are less likely to use it as a truck so they don’t have a need for 3.73 gearing. Could probably get away with 1.80 rear end for the suburban dads that mostly buy the higher end trucks.

      1. Seriously though. And the Off road machines will undoubtedly be in 4wLo when off road, and you would probably want a slightly higher rear end for that as the 10 speed has a high range of adjuability. The 2.7 with the 8 speed single speed transfer case has way more ground torque than my 5.3 with the 4l60 in 4wLo. The 3.73 will allow you to stay in high gear for off road towing longer, just as the 3.42 or 3.23 will allow you to stay in 4wLo all day off road without needing to shift to high range for 1 open field.

    2. It’s an incompatibility with the suspension lift. The accessory suspension lift specifically says it will not work on max trailering trucks.

    3. It makes to much sense to put the diesel in AT4, AT4X, or Trailboss. Besides, they would have to justify paying over 90 grand for a half ton truck, which is vastly overpriced the start with.

  3. What? This isn’t new. It’s been available since 2019/2020.

  5. Mary Barra says: ‘GM is the EV leader.’

So does that mean GM won’t put their Special Ignitions in their ICE Trucks, so GM Truck buyers can Coal Roll its EV buyers, and live to talk about their achievements?

  6. So the “diesel off-road package” requires the (Z71) “off-road package,” and adds to it 3.73 gears (in place of 3.23’s) and more aggressive treads…but you have to buy some extra stuff in the package that’s wholly unrelated to off-road anything.

Other manufacturers offer a variety of axle ratios to their customers, typically for a $0 to $100 fee. No excuse for GM not offering more than a 3.23 without have to add $1,000’s in packages.

  7. Why do the diesel off-road package gets Goodyear Dura tracs and the 5.3l or 6.2l does not ?

  8. TERRIBLE Looks nothing like a RAPTOR. NOTHING about this truck says off road. FORD WON ! DODGE WON !

  9. This “off road” package makes absolutely no sense, you can’t get the Off Road Protection Package and you can’t get the Tow Package, why can’t you get this with the Rally Package? Why do you have to get the tonneau cover and tubular assist steps? All the trims should be available with all engines. This makes no sense at all.

    1. honestly i have to agree with this point because i believe the max trailering package for the diesel gives you 3.73 gears anyway. This package should include the off-road steps not the chrome ones like mine came with. I hate them.

  11. Government motors is trying to keep all the Democrats , Brandon , AOC and the squad happy with fuel sipping 2.7 L 4 banging rice burners and cool little emblems that say Z71 OFF ROAD and ZR2 crap so that all the big boy GM loyal fans run down and pay 40% more for six shades of black and the three shades of black interior with the new car like dash !!!

  12. Too many restrictions on different build combinations. Can’t get the two speed transfer case with the 3.73 gear including Max trailer or diesel off road packages. Also can’t get any of these with the regular cab, why??
