Chevy Blazer Among Best SUVs Under $40,000, Says Consumer Reports

The 2022 Chevy Blazer is among the best new crossovers available for under $40,000, according to the automotive expert panel over at Consumer Reports.

Consumer Reports determined the 2022 Chevy Blazer is one of the best new budget-minded crossovers available today via its own road test scores and owner survey data. According to the latter, which uses owners’ options on previous model-year vehicles to determine future reliability and performance, the 2022 Chevy Blazer has a good driving experience and overall comfort, receiving scores of 74 and 77 out of 100 in these two categories, respectively.

The Chevy Blazer also earned a good road test score from CR with editors noting it has a refined ride, low cabin noise, comfortable and supportive front and rear seats and good interior fit and finish, with the Blazer receiving a score of 4 out of a possible 5 in all of these categories. It also received a perfect score for its quick zero to 60 mph performance of 6.5 seconds when equipped with the 3.6L LGX V6 engine, a perfect score for its smooth-shifting GM nine-speed automatic transmission and a perfect score for its braking performance.

While the 2019 and 2020 model year Chevy Blazer showed some room for improvement with regard to reliability, according to CR’s data, the 2021 model year showed improvement in this department. As such, the 2022 Chevy Blazer has a strong predicted reliability score of 4 out of 5.

CR also docked the Blazer V6 points for its poor fuel economy and greenhouse gas emissions compared to other crossover models with smaller turbocharged engines. That said, the V6 is what earned the crossover the strong acceleration score mentioned previously. Editors also criticized the low-mounted air vents and poor outward visibility.

The 2022 Chevy Blazer is one of three GM crossovers that appeared on this list. As GM Authority reported earlier this week, the 2022 Buick Envision was also determined to be one of the best new crossovers for sale under $40k by CR, along with the 2022 Chevy Traverse.

  1. Quality is much higher now that the Blazer is being built in Mexico . This wouldn’t of happen from a U.S. plant

    1. The quality of all GM products has improved over the years, particularly since the bad old days of the 70s and 80s. There are still some turkeys with various engines or transmissions but most models redesigned in the past few years have done well. IIRC, GM’s warranty costs were something like half of Ford’s recently

  2. We’ve had our Blazer Premier for two years and it fits our needs perfectly. I prefer a strong V6 that uses 87 octane fuel over a turbo 4 that might require 91 octane.

  3. While the Vette is in the garage, my winter car is a Blazer RS with the V6. I really appreciate the performance and get comments on the sporty styling. Comfortable to drive and with AWD I do not have to worry about the snow here in NE Ohio.
The RS package includes nice red stitching and candy apple red air vents to perk up the black interior. My prior winter car was a Caddie XT5, and the Blazer RS handles and runs much better.

  4. 2022 Lets see NO heated steering wheel for us in the north, no heated or cool seats for the cold north. The bottom plastic panels are now not painted same color as finish color. No cloth carpet protectors. And you wonder why sales are lacking. Oh ya no chips either..

  5. Have a 2021 Blazer RS with AWD and live in Tahoe. It ran through deep snow in latest huge storms like a pro. The heated seats and wheel are a big plus in snow country and can warm it up from inside the house with auto start. Great fit and finish, power, and looks. Very satisfied with this car.
