The luxury D-sedan segment saw cumulative sales expand nearly 14 percent to 61,590 units during the first quarter of 2021.
The GM Authority Take
Despite its trailing position in the segment rankings, the CT5’s sales performance was quite favorable, increased 46 percent during the quarter. This tells us that the all-new entry is still establishing footing in segment.
During Q1 2020, the CT5 saw 761 fewer deliveries than the 5,135 units delivered in Q4 2020, 373 higher than the 4,001 units reported in Q3 2020, 1,799 units higher than the 2,575 deliveries in Q2 2020 and 1,374 units higher than the 3,000 sales in Q1 2020.
We expect Cadillac CT5 sales to continue growing in the coming quarters as both inventory and consumer awareness of the model improve, enabling the new Caddy to obtain an even more favorable position in the segment. Aiding that will be the all-new CT5-V Blackwing. The ultra-high-performance sedan was revealed in February and will go on sale this summer.
However, the path forward won’t be easy, as several rivals will soon be completely overhauled, including the 2022 Mercedes-Benz C-Class, which has traditionally presented a strong opponent for the CT5 as well as its segment predecessor – the ATS range.

Let’s be honest those numbers are disastrous. There’s no way around it. GM did not create this vehicle to claim seventh spot in the segment! GM should pump up the publicity budget of CT4 and CT5. Many people are not aware of Cadillac’s new sedans, they think Caddy quit the sedan segment. I hope once again they don’t sink into pessimism and scrap these ones too without actually trying.
Sheep seaking missile
The Blackwings are coming
Years ago ,Cadillac sold itself . Only TV ads where in business programs, tennis golf .Only print, Life Time ,Vogue , Fortune .
No amount of ads will save those pods with Cadillac name on them.
Cadillac loyalists are hating them the most .
That entire divisions staff ,does not understand Cadillac ,has no class & are killing the legend .
The names prestige name fades, year by year.
It’s a sad & frustrating thing to watch .
I love Cadillacs & my friends …young people too & you could not give them one ,except Escalade .
Dante Ardenz
Fleetwoods & Eldorados would not sell on today’s market. The enthusiasts should get over it and move on.
Peter G.
I hear that all the time; Fleetwood and Eldorados would not sell today. The problem with that line of thinking is that Cadillac’s wannabe BMWs don’t sell either. As the CT5 is proving, folks would rather have the real deal over an imitator. The true blue sports sedan from Bavaria sells at double the pace of the Cadillac in Cadillac’s own backyard.
I wouldn’t suggest Cadillac build a repeat of the diminutive 1986 Eldorado that killed their business to start with. I don’t think anybody believes that. Nobody is suggesting wire wheel covers and that kind of pseudo “luxury” again but Cadillac proved to us they know how to reinterpret the Eldorado for today’s world. The Elmiraj concept was a brilliant reinterpretation of the Eldorado’s persona. It was at once both unmistakably Cadillac yet muscular and thoroughly modern. There wasn’t a hint of 1986 in the Elmiraj and the bad days but it did have the attitude and attention-grabbing presence of the great Eldorados like the 1967.
I think that’s what folks like myself believe will work for Cadillac. They need to be 100 percent authentically themselves with bold designs, swagger, performance and elegance. They’ll never make it as a BMW or now Tesla clone but they just might with a 21st Century version of the themselves. In their heyday, Cadillac never copied. Instead they were copied. They need to follow no one once again. Building the Elmiraj would’ve been leading. Building CT5 is following.
Well what you have buster ,are NOT selling , respected ,admired ,or aspired too .
A modern interpretation of Eldorado & Fleetwood sure would.
Be who you are. not a pathetic imitator .
You obviously know nothing of what Cadillac is .
Never got the best table ,or turned any heads ….
That’s the Cadillac experience & people who never had that ,should not design the cars .
Move on ?.
You bet I have & millions of others to Mercedes. BMW ,Audi ,Lexus ,Acura , Genesis .
Even the Buick Enclave are beating your ” Crossovers ‘.
The great cosmopolitan areas ,rich suburbs , country clubs & executive parking lots where filled with Cadillacs at one time .
Open your eyes to what lines up there now .
Not you Cimmeron Four & Fives .
Your personal attack on me & smart people who love the brand proves again. what types run your Division & that’s all part of the disdain people have who will continue to ‘ move on ‘.
Rolls Royce Ferrari ,Porsche Mercedes BMW , Lexus ,all crushing you did NOT ‘ move on ‘, but moved up ,by retaining what they where & getting better & surely do not copy Cadillac today ,but just snicker.
A-S M,
No point in hoping; they will get scraped. The only question is how quickly. It could happen as soon as this summer I’d say. Leopards don’t change their spots. Plus the future is all-electric. Mary hath so decreed. CT4 and CT5 thus have no future. They were designed during the JdN reign and brought to market as the company had already incurred significant development costs but I believe there are no plans for replacements and these cars were obsolete upon launch. They represent the end of an era for Cadillac. The time for Cadillac as BMW wannabe is ending and henceforth the new mission is to follow and emulate Tesla.
I wish it were not so but I believe it is. Having said that, I am surprised CT5 clocks in at number seven given that everyone knows it and the CT4 are, to use a Hollywood metaphor, Dead Men Walking.
Where did the IS sales come from? Musk’s Model 3 belongs on the list by now. The TLX sticks out to me, as it seems Acura is touting its performance. It should be a winnable exercise for marketing to counter that (Mag-ride, E-diff, Alpha chassis balance are tools toward that).
Right on target for a participation trophy like every Cadillac model not named Escalade.
How can a company with a legacy as powerful as Cadillac ; the legendary , think that ‘ thing ‘, called a Cadillac ,would be doing well?
Cadillac used to lead the sales in luxury.
NOBODY knows what the dam thing is with that ‘ CT5 ‘ alphabet soup, and when they find out ,don’t want a small Cadillac .
More following,no leading.
People prefer a real Mercedes ,or BMW to this upgraded Cimarron .
And who ever put those horizontal taillight addictions on iconic Cadillac ‘ fin ‘ lights should be fired on the spot .
Hey GM sell off Cadillac to someone who has class & understands the legend,or close your doors for good .
Dante Ardenz,
“Hey GM sell off Cadillac to someone who has class & understands the legend, or close your doors for good.”
I’ve been saying this for some time. The folks running gm and specifically Mary and Mark are gm lifers raised in decaying Detroit with hearty “Midwestern” sensibilities. As such, they know trucks and practical things but neither has the style, class, or sophistication to run a luxury brand. That’s why Cadillac keeps failing with the buyers they seek. The only hope for Cadillac is for gm to sell it to another entity that would have the sense to bring in folks with good taste to relaunch it and restore its cachet. Honestly the only Cadillac that sells without incentives is the Escalade and what is it? It’s a truck (gm does trucks well) with a somewhat tacky, over-the-top, blinged-out persona that appeals to the nouveau riche devoid of any sophistication. That’s it though. The truly affluent with elan haven’t aspired to own a Cadillac in 35 years.
Your comment is brilliant! Hawley Earl ,who put Cadillac style in the map from 1927 ,to 59 , along with his legacy proteges who lasted into the 70 s, got what Cadillac was .
The top ,an inspiration ,and a dream .
They did not copy ,but where copied.
Earle grew up in old Hollywood ,and Bill.Mitchell was a cool guy too.
These Cadillacs are miserable.
We have been promised beautiful Cadillacs for 30 years & they just show up as show cars .
People literally snarl at not only the sad designs, stupid nomenclature ,but the stupidity of the hicks playing car designers.
The stupid ads worse then the cars.
Nerds trying to be cool .
Roger Penske wanted Cadillac & Buick .
The hayseeds at GM should of given it to him .
Your observations & erudition , are greatly admired by me .
Thank you.
This segment is for the nouvaeu riche. I doubt most Benz, Audi, or Volvo owners here were aiming to buy harsh performance over sophistication. That really also goes for the others, but with the credible performance perception. CTS sports sedan buyers are worth not throwing away. I like your sentiment; there’s other segments where it rings more true.
GM better get the Lansing Grand River plant open soon or there will be no product to sell; CT4, CT5 and Camaro.
Lol, plenty of sour comments here. No, the XTS isn’t coming back. Cadillac is having one of it’s best year yet and the 6 figure models isn’t here yet (no, the Escalade starts below $100k).
I do wish for an US CT6 again but I can’t wait to see what they have by ’25.
Cadillac needs a BLM Cadillac – one without wheels, 192 easy payments, and an oversized guy compartment where you and your homies can fit all your illegal pieces.
Or a Tahoe PPV for backseat room for recently convicted cops…
Tweener strategy is a bunch of BS. CT5 is nothing more than an E segment drop-out competing in the D segment based on pricing. What luxury brand is presenting its wares as more for less????? That shooting itself in the foot out the gate.
The performance specs of the new M3 with AWD are matching that of the CT5-V BW which has a supposed 165hp advantage. No bueno!!! And with M5 and E63 AMG S hitting 0-60 in the sub 3 second range, CT5-V BW is shaping up the be an also-ran.
BlackWing variant hopefully will have an advantage in handling and vehicle dynamics to make up for their lack of AWD engineering.
Cadillac limps along and Mary keeps kicking the cane out from underneath it.
Wrong segment. I don’t care how anyone at gm wants to spin it, it’s to big for this list.
