However, the Kia Soul could be considered to be part of the smaller A-segment. Removing the Soul from the Hyundai and Kia sales totals leaves the Korean duo with 51,574 units, or over 15,000 units less than GM.

The mainstream subcompact crossover segment expanded nearly 8 percent to 260,875 units during Q4 2020, meaning the Chevy Trax significantly underperformed the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

The 21 percent decline in Chevy Trax sales during the fourth quarter of 2020 is not unexpected, since it’s now facing internal competition from the all-new Chevy Trailblazer. However, despite the 29 percent decline, the Trax still managed to maintain a leadership position in the segment.

Earlier in 2020, the Trax managed to post a 3 percent growth rate during Q2, defying the COVID-19 pandemic to become the only model in the segment to post a sales uptick. We suspected that the Q2 increase was caused by favorable supply of the model at the retail level, as the GM Bupeyong plant in South Korea was somewhat shielded from production interruptions brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. By comparison, the GM San Luis Potosi plant in Mexico – which also produces the Trax – saw a greater disruption due to the virus.

2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer joins the Trax in the mainstream subcompact crossover segment

Given that the Trax is being sold alongside the much newer and more attractive Trailblazer, it’s possible that Trax sales will drop off as Trailblazer continues to appeal to those who would have otherwise purchased the Trax. However, the Trax and Trailblazer transact at notably different prices, with the former significantly more affordable than the latter. And, as GM Authority reported just recently, the Trax and Trailblazer both have the youngest buyers in the segment.

  • This is a direct result of the awful products The Ford Motor Company is putting out in this segment!

    • CKNSLS: Don't know if I would say the Ford (just one showing) is awful, but it's certainly not super competitive either. I think Ford's overall problem is really bad interiors and horrible screens that just don't look like they belong or of quality. I don't hate Ford, but I'm not a huge fan either. But until they address the interiors, they will have numbers that are not as good as they could be. It's funny because you then look at Lincoln and the interiors seem to be so nice (if you don't mind the screen tacked onto the dash look).

  • Trax is the GM equivalent of Dodge Journey! Pity GEM version is not available. This chart tells me how damaged, besides trucks, Ford really is, and that GM, FCA and Hyundai/Kia best understand the segment and US drivers.
Ten years ago GM would have never had the youth demo and any list would have been dominated by Honda and Toyota.
