The GM Authority Take

The not-insignificant decrease in GM Mexico sales in October represents the eighth consecutive month of contractions suffered by the company in the Latin American country. Once again, Buick, Cadillac and Chevrolet posted negative monthly numbers, while GMC has accumulated three consecutive months of healthy increases on a year-over-year basis. In general, GM and most other automakers have been affected by the decrease in automobile demand in Mexico due to macroeconomic difficulties accentuated by COVID-19.

Notably, GM Mexico’s biggest loss in volume continues to be caused by a drastic drop in sales of what have traditionally been the company’s two best-selling models in the country in recent years: the Chevrolet Aveo and Beat. Between both vehicles alone, there is a very significant sales volume decrease of 6,357 units year-over-year. In addition, the poor performance of 20 other GM models during the past month also contributed to the overall decline.

However, there were several bright spots, including the new Chevrolet Onix which, for the first time ever, became GM’s best-selling model in Mexico. The Onix netted 2,821 deliveries, representing the highest sales figure ever reached by the vehicle, which is manufactured locally at the GM San Luis Potosí plant. For its part, the all-new Chevrolet Tracker registered its best sales performance to date in the Mexican market in October. Its 1,503 units allowed it to rank as the second best-selling utility in the country.

Also of note are big, triple-digit increases for GM’s recently overhauled full-size SUVs – the 2021 model year Chevy Tahoe and GMC Yukon. Meanwhile, the Chevy Suburban – also overhauled for the 2021 model year – posted a healthy 48 percent sales increase.
