2020 Silverado High Country Gets Transmission Downgrade: Exclusive

Chevrolet’s 2020 Silverado High Country is offered with a choice of three engines – two gasoline and one diesel – mated to one of two automatic transmissions – an eight-speed or a ten-speed. However, one particular configuration that was previously equipped with the ten-speed will now be equipped with the eight-speed instead.

Specifically, the 2020 Silverado 1500 High Country 4WD Short Bed model with the 5.3L V8 L84 engine featured the ten-speed automatic transmission since the beginning of the model year. However, GM Authority has exclusively learned that starting with vehicles ordered in July, this configuration will get the eight-speed unit instead, and the change will remain in effect through the end of the 2020 model year.

The process behind the change is also worthy of mention: dealers will continue placing orders for the trucks with the 10-speed automatic transmission, but GM will manually change the order to the 8-speed. As a result of the change, GM will provide a $200 credit on the vehicle invoice as well as on the window sticker. The change has yet to be reflected on any public-facing materials as of this writing.

When asked for a statement by GM Authority, Chevrolet declined to comment on the change.

However, sources have since told us that the 2020 Silverado High Country 4WD Short Bed model was previously limited in availability due to a constraint with a component associated with the ten-speed automatic gearbox in the 4WD Short Bed configuration. Since no solution currently exists to resolve this constraint, GM made the decision to replace the ten-speed transmission with the eight-speed.

Meanwhile, the optional 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline and 3.0L I6 LM2 turbo-diesel Duramax engines will continue being mated to the ten-speed transmission in the 2020 Silverado High Country, regardless of bed or drivetrain configuration. Additionally, 2WD Silverado High Country models powered with the 5.3L V8 L84 engine will continue shipping with the 8-speed automatic.

The GM Hydra-Matic eight-speed automatic transmission has been the subject of many complaints, mostly surrounding erratic shifting behavior and lackluster feel. GM issued a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) to address the issues, though – based on comments from existing owners – the success of the fix appears to be hit-or-miss. A class-action lawsuit surrounding the issues with the transmission was filed in April of 2019.

By comparison, the GM 10-speed automatic transmission, which is newer than the 8-speed, does not appear to be suffering from these issues.

  1. That’s really unfortunate. Having driven a 5.3 8spd RST and a 5.3 10spd TB that 10speed makes a really nice difference, especially unfortunate considering the HC price point. I’d almost skip out on purchasing, $200 is crap..or tell them I want the $200 out of inconvenience and then go for the 6ft bed with 10spd at the same price as the SB

  2. Why can’t GM do what Ford did and largely supply the 10 spd across the board? GM is very frustrating.

    1. I doubt it will have a measurable impact on sales, very few folks know how many gears are in their transmissions. Also, the increase in gears in transmissions has been somewhat disappointing from a performance perspective and very disappointing from a fuel economy perspective. Going from 4 to 6 speeds seemed to make some difference, especially in performance. All the increases since then from 6 to 8,9 and 10 speeds have been almost undetectable on the fuel economy front.

      1. My comment has nothing to do with how many gears the tranny has or weather the customer knows how many gears it has. Also has nothing to do with fuel economy. If you knew your stuff you would know my comment has to do with the bad reputation that the gm 8 speed has throughout the auto industry. The article even points it out.

        1. Actually Matt, I do know my stuff. And you are fully aware that the problems with the 8 speed appear to be solved. You know that as well as I do, but you choose to ignore it.

You essentially stated that GM would sell zero High Country trim level trucks, which is ridiculous hyperbole.

Numerous electrical issues, coolant leaks , etc etc. I just purchased a 2019 GMC Sierra SLT and there is no comparison between the two trucks. It is night and day the difference in the ride , handling etc. Zero issue with it yet and from my experience the Fords are the same they have always been cheap. The Ford has cost me so much money in rentals while I wait for parts I am up over $2500 in rental fees for a truck 2 years old and less than 85 k.

            2. Do you realize that the High Country and Denali are equal. The Denali is not above High Country just look at the prices, they are about the same. The High Country has a Country Western theme while the Denali has a city slicker theme. It’s the same thing Ford does with the King Ranch and Platinum, also Ram does it with the Long Horn and Limited. Also Toyota does it with the 1794 and Platinum.

Sure the AT4 and High Country have different color, however if you check you will know !

                2. Already did and leather is a personal preference but lets say it does. One has more standard features than the other but the price point is about the same is what you are missing. What you need to do is watch what you say because using your logic would mean that the higher end Ford would automatically be better than anything GM offers since they offer more.

                  1. Tommy and Crocker,

It IS a personal preference, My brother would prefer the harder lower grade leather. He has told me this, yet it was after I pointed out that the Denali leather is softer and thicker, ( a higher grade ).
Now its different than saying a Ford diesel is better than the Duramax, because is it ? How would one prove that ? So that is a preference.
Yet grading leather is not a preference !
Sure your preference on what you like better is a preference !

Yet the grading of leather is a standard !
                    A quality standard !
Its like if you like wheat over corn to eat, that’s a preference.
But when selling wheat or corn, there is a standard, Weight per bushel, moisture, protein level cracked kernels, etc !
Like I said, go cut a couple seats, one a Denali, one a HC, take the leather to a leather shop and have an expert explain it to you.
They will tell you what leather is a better quality, yet what one you like better is up to you !
One more time, its like this, my sister and I bought new sofas at exactly the same time, she paid $699.00, for a leather one, I paid $2000.00 for a leather one, she has bought 5 new ones, they are just junk, still some kind of leather, but just wear out, paper thin, mine was down filled higher quality soft thick leather, and looks like the day I bought it.

                    Reply
                    1. And still, they are equally priced. No getting around this sir, if it has meant to be a higher trim level then the price would reflect it.

If you are not getting good quality service switch dealers and fill out the surveys they send out after every service visit to hold them accountable to corporate. Complaining at large doesn’t do honestly much good for either side.

          Again, what survey ?

          1. I guess this explains my good customer service vs your experience. I get a phone call periodically and always bombarded with survey invites after any visit. The dealership always tells me to call if I cannot give them a perfect score so they can make it right.

I had an oil smudge inside after a simple oil change. I told them and the genera manager personally apologized and gave me a $50 visa gift card!

I feel for those who don’t have this kind of service. I do buy new trucks frequently, but from talking to other patrons they have the same satisfaction. I am lucky maybe?

If you don’t give your dealer a 5 star rating, you will NOT get the survey !!

              Its that simple !

Its just like saying, you will not get the Covid, if you don’t get tested !

GM will make the data whatever they want ! They – GM – just does NOT survey the people who are not satisfied !

And some things, the dealer, can not make right. Its just to expensive for then if GM will not pay !
That’s where the attorney gets involved and you have a class action !

And I had nothing but GREAT service from GM for 35 years !!
Just took 1 lying service manager, and never a survey again !
              1 person !!!

You know, like the 2.0T !

And just like ALL vehicles, GM full and well knows, most people do not order vehicles !!

All this does is makes a hole lot of people hate their ” great vehicles ” because when you buy a dealer stocked ” cheap junk ” Good Enough ” GM vehicle, and compare it to an ordered GM vehicle that has what should be stock, there is A LOT of difference !!

  6. How can GM ever build a rough shifting clunky transmission. It’s just not what they do, they’re known for other things however, and not in a good way.

I loved the 4L60E trans that was in my 94 Cadillac Fleetwood. So buttery smooth and strong. GM vehicles for the most part had good transmissions over the years, it’s everything else that fell apart in the car that made them unreliable.

I’d love to own a 69 Chevy C-10 pick-up, when Trucks were trucks and if one accidentally hit something, the truck wouldn’t even notice it and keep truckin along!

Killing off all of it’s stick shift transmissions along with the Camaro in a few short years. Deleting the 2.0T upgrade on the Nox and Terrain. Still making the 8 speed automatic transmission when the 10 speed is obviously vastly superior. Killing off the best sedan and engine Cadillac had and any chance of ever competing with the real players. And getting bitch slapped into oblivion in the mid size sedan market by virtually every competitor that offer AWD, more power, more std features and safety with the Malibu offering 160 HP and 3 sport packages of essentially the same thing! It’s as if Barra is deliberately trying to bring this company down and turn it into a joke!

Funny that GM’s 10 speed automatic is supposedly trouble free, while the companion 10 speed automatic from Ford (where Ford looked over GM’s shoulder during the design process) is nothing but trouble. Wonder what GM knows that Ford doesn’t? (Answer: GM knows how to design an automatic transmission and Ford doesn’t!)

    2. Odd. Ford doesn’t seem to have any difficulty getting all the 10-speeds it needs, odd if they “looked over GMs shoulder” during the design process. Perhaps it was the other way around? BY the way, my personal experience is I’ve replaced and fixed way more Suburban/Tahoe transmissions than F-series/Excursion transmissions.

I’m reminded of my days in the navy, and all of the men going to the exchange or out on the economy to buy stereo systems. Their overriding concerns were how many watts did the amplifier put out, and how many drivers and crossover points did the loudspeakers have. None seemed concerned with the sound quality.

  19. This sucks if you are in the market for a 1/2 ton CC Chevy. However with the price point of these trucks, splurge the relatively insignificant price increase and get the 6.2 or Duramax. I have a ‘19 Denali which has the 6.2 (older L86 version) and 10spd. The 6.2 puts a smile on my face. Day to night difference in power and tq over the 3 previous Tahoe, Suburban, and Silverado 5.3’s (6L90 6spd) I’ve owned. You will never go back! The 5.3 is a perfectly adequate engine, but one taste of the 460ft-lbs and the additional $3k price tag becomes moot! The ten speed is great, and I’m glad GM held back several years releasing it behind Ford. It shows they took lots of time perfecting the power train software. A side note, my 6.2 4×4 Yukon gets better mileage than my 5.3 Tahoe. The 10 speed only twists 1650RPM @80MPH. I have to nearly hit 90MPH to run above 2k RPM. They matched the 3.23 gears to that 10spd perfectly. Interstate cruise @80mph is always an honest 20+MPG mid 20’s if the wind helps. 16-18 if I have a headwind, unfortunately. Count on 12mpg in streetlight slow speed city driving, however.

  20. Isn’t this the same 10-speed they co-developed with Ford? Maybe “component availability” has more to do with Ford putting the 10-speed in virtually every truck, and by virtue of their greater utilization, reducing the availability for GM who uses it as a niche product? Is this the same box as the phony “Allison” 10-speed in the HD trucks? What’s next, “limited availability” of 6.2L engines so GM substitutes 5.3’s? Or “co-develops” a replacement with FCA that looks a lot like the RAM Hemi? Wasn’t long ago GM had egg on it’s face for putting Chevy engines into Oldsmobiles. Seems they’d be better at this type of stuff given their size and history.

    1. The 10sp *Allison is a different transmission. It is much heavier and obviously has to have a huge torque rating due to the torque and HP war the class 2b (3/4 ton) and larger trucks are partaking in.
While it’s true the new transmission was not created solely by Allison. It still is an Allison Transmission. Allison approved of it’s design and licensed it’s name to be on it. It’s just different than other Allison transmissions because it was created specifically for the light and medium GM trucks, instead of being an industry wide-commercially available unit.
The previous 5 and 6 spd Allison 1000 trans was used by many Medium duty OEMs, and just made some modifications for GM to use it in their trucks.
The new “Allison” was developed specifically by GM to integrate seamlessly to the Duramax (and maybe the 6.6 gasser?) powertrain in the GM Class 2b (2500) and larger HD light duty trucks.

From what I understand… this transmission is not widely commercially available to other OEMs. It is licensed with the Allison moniker exclusively to GM.
It is just not your “standard” Allison which are commercially available as a stand-alone transmission and adaptable to many different Manufacturer’s engines.

  23. So I’m talking with my mechanics telling them I’m trading my 2015 Chevy Duramax in for a new GMC Denali Duramax 3500. They say, don’t even go there this year. GM has designed their own 10 speed transmission and put Allison’s name on it. there are nothing but problems with it. And with this Covid crap their throwing people on the assembly line that shouldn’t be there meaning no quality or efficiency. So that got me wondering what I should do. it’s time for another one before extended warranty is up but I also don’t know how true their comments are. I sure haven’t heard anything like that on these comments. anyone else hear this? is it fact or fiction??

    1. Mitch,
I am a member of a face book group of 2020 Duramax owners. Was one of the first, as I received my 2020 Denali Duramax at the end of August 2019, before the strike, before the virus !

You are correct, GM has a good number of troubles with the new ( not Allison ) 10 speed in the HD.
However most have NOT had troubles !
I personally LOVE mine so far !
I also personally do NOT believe the troubles with the new ( not Allison ) HD 10 speed are anything even close to the % of just outright HORRIBLE troubles that GM has with this GM 8 speed junk transmission !

A few people have had leaks on stuff, others have had complete transmission failures, yet STILL, its just the GM new vehicle troubles !!!!

Like I said, MOST are GREAT ! Mine is GREAT !!

Yet hear this, GM has HORRIBLE and I would say, NON EXISISTANT customer support !!
And with the strike followed by the virus, followed by the bleeding of cash, at this time, in 2020, GM just simply can not get some things that they do not have. if you would have troubles with a newer designed GM vehicle, your greatest dealership, will not be able to get the parts they need to fix your troubles !

Yet DO NOT let this GM 8 speed junk transmission talk sway your decision, this GM 8 speed junk transmission, is just junk. GM will simply push the warranty out on the majority of these, the owners will trade and sell, and the aftermarket will fix them all in the next 5 years !

Anyway, remember GM as a company has NO customer support.
All of the GM customer relationship comes from the independently owned dealership, and GM has NO power to tell them what to do !
If your dealership will not help you, you are screwed, GM has no way to make them !

Hope this helps you, find out for yourself, do not believe others, or me for that fact.

The ONLY GM warranty or customer support comes from an attorney.

      1. Thanks for the info. I guess it’s no worse than any other vehicle with their problems. i’m thinking go forward and get it. I really don’t want to hold off any longer. I am going to follow the Face Book 2020 Duramax owners group.
        Appreciate your opinion and help.

  24. Come on general motors what is wrong with you people,I worked in GMC dealership when I first had experiences with this transmission. It’sa piece of crap so, what do you do you take the 10-speed away (which Ford produces) and put the 8-speed in, without resolving the issues with it,is Roger Smith running the company from the grave?

  25. Am i the only one here who is amazed at how GM is managing to produce trucks and actually increase marketshare in a time like this? after both a UAW strike and COVID shutdown, they are still making trucks and have increased marketshare. this move is kinda like what they did in WW2 with sherman production, when motor production couldn’t keep up, they went and strapped 5 Oldsmobile car motors together to create 28 “Sherman eggbeaters” to maintain production.

  26. So let me get this straight. You order a vehicle with a 10 speed and GM replaces it with the troublesome 8 speed. Then they give you $200 for your trouble and the trouble you are going to have with the 8 speed.

    Sounds good to me. lol

  27. This January I purchased a 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT, 5.3 with a 10 speed transmission. I babied the truck from day one. At the beginning of July I had only put 950 miles on it. Then, without warning, the transmission started shifting hard from 1st-2nd and 2nd-1st. Long story short, the dealer was instructed by GM to replace the valve body. Unbelievable for a new vehicle. I have serious doubts about reliability going forward.

  29. Isn’t there a class action lawsuit against the 8 speed? I guess they really think its that good to go back to it and not worried about the lawsuit.

  30. Can anyone comment on the 10 speed transmission with a 6.2 engine in the Chevy or GMC line? Does is shift smoothly?

I just bought a low miles 2018 GMC Denali with 6.2 / 8speed, and dang it the hard shifting issue in 2nd gear is really bothering me. I did the flush, it’s maybe a little better.

7k miles and having these little quirks that I know are not how it should be but I am learning I may have to live with it.

I wasn’t attracted to the new Denali body styles or interiors but I think I am liking the High Country truck, I like how that Truck looks with the right wheels.

that said, how is the 10 speed? Is it better than the 8L90? Is it worth it to trade it? I literally just sold my 2012, bought a 2018 with 6500 miles on it 3 weeks ago… I thought it was my dream truck and dang this transmission issue has me having buyers remorse. It’s more first world problems, the transmission is going to leave me stranded… it’s just an expensive truck that doesn’t shift nice and smooth, that truly bothers me
