General Motors faces a new class-action lawsuit after owners claimed the automaker’s 8-speed automatic transmission houses a major defect. Per the information posted to Classaction.org, drivers have experienced violent shakes, jerks, or a “hard shift” when selecting a gear with the automatic transmission.
The information also says 13 technical service bulletins have been filed about 8-speed automatic transmission problems, though none of them have remedied the problem absolutely.
The technical name for this transmission is either the 8L90 or 8L45 automatic transmission, which is found in numerous GM vehicles. The transmission pairs to cars on a rear-wheel-drive architecture, meaning owners of GM’s sports cars, luxury sedans, trucks, and SUVs have the 8-speed automatic transmission in question.
Specifically, the transmission is found in:
- 2015-2019 Chevrolet Silverado
- 2017-2019 Chevrolet Colorado
- 2015-2019 Chevrolet Corvette
- 2016-2019 Chevrolet Camaro
- 2015-2017 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV
- 2016-2019 Cadillac ATS and ATS-V
- 2016-2019 Cadillac CTS and CTS-V
- 2016-2019 Cadillac CT6
- 2015-2019 GMC Sierra
- 2015-2019 GMC Yukon and Yukon XL
- 2017-2019 GMC Canyon.
The problem is most common when a driver accelerates of decelerates and the transmission moves to shift a gear. Drivers reported a hesitation, then a shudder or jerk with the gear change. However, it’s not exclusive to gear changes as some owners reported the issue within a single gear. According to the information compiled so far, some drivers said the event has been so violent it felt like another car had hit them.
One owner reported that moving from the “reverse” to “drive” gear was so violent that the car nearly drove through a garage door.
It’s worth noting the NHTSA has also received numerous complaints about the transmission found in the number of GM vehicles. The lawsuit claims the issue’s source is the torque converter, which may be exposed to undue friction. Eventually, the gears may not function properly as metal shavings move throughout the transmission. This is not a definite conclusion, but an alleged issue in the lawsuit. One NHTSA complaint does cite a failed torque converter after 16,000 miles in a GMC Canyon.

Thanks for the thumbs down scott3 !!
For dots !!
Thumbs down for dots !
Please don’t think bad of me for asking but, how do I find out what transmission I have in my truck I know it’s the 8 speed but that’s all I know. Maybe the VIN?
Thank you in advance.
I have a 2016 Yukon Denali. At 45k the transmission started shuttering. Its now been in the shop 5 separate times for the same problem. They keep flushing the transmission but it only last a week or so until it starts again. It’s in the shop again they said GM said flush it again. If a transmission has been flushed 5 times and it still hasn’t fixed why would they keep doing it? This tells you how bright they are, but I’m going to keep on bringing it back and after 10 times I’m going to file my own suit and force them to buy it back or replace both my torque converter and transmission. When a car is under warranty and you can fix them you have to buy it back…we’ll see how it goes…
Best get rid of it if you can afford to. I’ve got a 2017 GMC Sierra with a rebuilt transmission at 90000 miles because I didn’t get rid of it. They’ll nurse you til warranty is out and then give you a discount on that rebuilt transmission. Around $4000 was my cost.
I’ve had this on my 2017 Sierra, my local gmc dealer told me to flush the fluid, for 900$, I said thats not right, then they said we will drop the Labor charge, and do it if I purchase the fluid at 500$. All of you who have had it flushed did they make you pay for the fluid? I’m still under warranty as well.
I rented a 2019 Corvette last week with that trans and it was doing some funny things.
That’s because it has adaptive shifting. If you have a different driving style than the last person that drove it, it will do funny things. Not to mention rentals live a hard life. Some people have no problem beating on a rental because they have no respect for other people’s property.
That’s because ( insert excuse here )
No issues with shift, installed K&N fresh air filter I feel an increase in acceleration, I am now thinking of putting in a performance chip stage 2. Any comments pro or con
Well I have watched this situation since I own one. Note mine works fine so far.
The main issue is the Shudder that happens driving at 40 MPH on a slight upgrade. This is what most report on the forums. This is only an issue on some and not all of these transmissions.
GM has changed the programming, the Converters and even the transmissions with no correction for some. Now they have changed the fluid several times. The latest with a flush appears to be working. The fluid they were using was absorbing moisture and creating the issue.
The hard shift in first gear is when it is cold. More load the smoother it is. Once warm it is gone.
The delay is another issue that some of them had a seal that let the converter leak down. It needed to fill before you would move. If you stepped on the gas before it filled then it would hit hard. There is another TSB on this and they just replace the transmission.
There is a higher incident rate on the 8 speed but not all of them are having issues.
A class action is not going to fix the problem. GM has been working on it with a number of fixes and even has bought back vehicles with little drama. To be honest I don’t think GM knows for sure what the problem was.
Until the last fix they never said what they thought it was and the last fix they now claim moisture in the fluid and are using a new Mobil One Fluid to address it. So far I have not seen anyone have additional issues with the latest fix. They may have resolved it but only time will tell.
Knock on wood mine is good so far and I only have the hard first to second shift on cold days for the first couple miles. After that it is smooth as glass.
I did have the leak down issue and they replaced the transmission and converter with no question. No issue since.
So in reality ” mine works fine so far” is an ” OUT RIGHT LIE”
You do know if you had troubles and had it replaced, it is NOT ” works fine so far” !!!!!!!!!!!!!
What the h**l !!!
If you buy a new product, and have ( almost the most important ” part replaced it is NOT ” works fine so far” !!
This is the trouble !!
How can you spread mine works fine so far when it literally did NOT !!!
OK, OK, OK,
Here is the proper statement !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
After having troubles with my 8 speed transmission like MANY others the DEALER replaced it at GM’s expense !!
GM has ZERO CUSTOMER SERVICE !!!
If your DEALER did not want to help you, you would be screwed like so, so, many others !!!!
Just because you are ” in the loop” of GM and performance products ” you ” got help !!!
So, So many others have NOT !!!!!
People like you go on and on about ” O there is nothing wrong with my transmission” and ” why would a person like myself be worried about the new 10 speed in the HD.”
I’ll tell you why !!!!!!!
First I have NEVER owned an automatic transmission in a truck, built by GM, that I haven’t had troubles with !!!
Second with GM having ZERO CUSTOMER SUPPORT, and doing NOTHING for their CUSTOMERS who have troubles, this is why a person would be worried !!
It is one thing to purchase a vehicle with warranty, but when said company does not have to honer said warranty it is a problem !!!
The warranty was ONLY created to give the buying public some reassurance of longevity of their purchase !!
Now that GM doesn’t even have to honor their own warranty and the CUSTOMER has to go to court for help, WHAT !!!!
GREED, GREED, GREED, GREED.
I understand capitalism, and making money, but as an engineer, marketer, salesperson, service person, or just a HUMAN.
How can you defend this, especially after your OWN vehicle that YOU drive has had troubles.
If on a daily basis I ran my business with the attitude of ” that’s good enough and if you have trouble you can sue” I could not sleep at night.
O Well you keep trying to convince yourself your GM vehicle has been FINE after a transmission replacement !!
While others have to SUE to get the same treatment as you !!!!
This happens to other brands too. Just go look in the forums. Most of these issues are the dealers and not GM. Some service departments couldn’t figure out how to get out of box that has no top on it. I know people who have the vehicles with the 8 speed and have no issues. So its not as big as this lawsuit is making it. I’m surprise there isn’t any with Honda’s 9 speed and 1.5 turbo problems. Maybe there are but no one is paying any attention to it.
Lifelongalwaysthevictim
GM took care of my problem and the problem I had was not the shudder. I am ok on the shudder issue and fully disclosed I had a separate issue.
It was not the dealer that approved the replacement it was GM. In my case like it or not GM did me right in customer service.
I in no way defended anything I just explained what is going on since I have been watching this from a personal aspect of it. I may not have the issue now but later I may and I want to know where I stand. Sorry I don’t play the victim till I actually have the Shudder issue.
I have read the TSB’s and followed the corrections. The problem is GM did not know what is wrong. They have done various changes and not all are cheap. The latest they finally gave a reason and people who have had the latest fluid have reported good results. At this point only time will tell if that holds up.
If you are so smart then tell us just what is wrong here and just what GM is not fixing?
If they all were failing the problem would be much easier to find. Since only some are experiencing the issue then it is much harder to isolate.
Might also google the Shudder issue and GM is not the only one with these issues. The moisture in the fluid make sense as Audi had the same issue and found some coolers were leaking in the radiator.
As for Greed the class action is just that. They get a group of lawyers to band together to represent the owners not at their request. They force GM into a settlement that results in a discount on a new car of $300 or a free oil change while they take millions for themselves for legal cost.
In the end still no fix just some rich lawyers and people still suffering a problem.
As for down vote for dots? There are more than myself that vote you down.
The dots mean nothing to me as do most of your posts.
scottGMisalwaysgreat3
It must be a full time job keeping track of what exact GM transmission problem is the problem.
You know you are not the only person on the planet who has had transmission troubles, right ?
You are also not the only person who has rebuilt automatic transmissions for years, right?
You are not the only person who is a coder and can tune, right ?
Now I FOR SURE do NOT agree with a lawsuit !!!!!!
And I do also agree that the lawyers will get more out of this than the vehicle owners !!
Where I DISSAGREE is that GM is taking care of this issue !!!
GM if they loose will now pay the lawyers money and the GM CUSTOMER will just loose more, If GM would simply TRY, REACH OUT to the owners and say we are behind you as long as this trouble is happening.
You make it sound like an automatic transmission is some kind of mystery !!!
A bunch of mechanical parts put into motion by fluid pressure on clutchplates now controlled by electric over hydraulic solenoids and a computer program.
Lets see GM first made an automatic transmission in ( ill take a guess in the 30’s ) so for 90 years, let that sink in 90 years and GM cant figure out what is the problem.
The problem is GM doesn’t want to through the right amount of money at the solution.
GM is a CUT and RUN manufacturer.
9 and 10 speeds are now the trouble we will put the 8 behind us and move on.
Let someone else worry about that junk.
The dots mean nothing to me either, its just comical.
And for sure your posts mean nothing to me.
After all its like you saying, after 6 GM transmissions the one I have now seems to be working fine, no troubles here !!
Transmissions for most MFG’s are a mess. The issues with durability, hard shifts, shudder, slow shifts, hunting gears etc have been a problem for a good while for all brands.
Much of this is all due to the games they have to play with meeting MPG and emission and it leads to ever more complex transmissions and more potential issues.
Today there are no TH400’s on the market anymore.
People wonder why MFGS are pushing electric? This is one of several reasons. EV has no transmission. They have less moving parts, they have less government regulations etc.
If they could reduce the cost and increase the range and decrease charge times they could solve many of their issues they face with so many vehicles anymore.
Today if a MFG gets programming wrong on a transmission odds are good they can not change it because it would void their government testing and put them at risk of EPA violations that would be even more expensive than some upset customers lawsuit.
Building cars is damn hard and it is only going to get more complex and more difficult. The technology in today’s cars surpasses what NASA used in the 60’s-90’s.
Sorry if reality get in the way of you playing the victim. Life is what you make of it. Some of it goes right some does not and how you deal with it is what matters. Pissing and moaning is just going to stain your car seat.
Yep Ram has problems with the redesigned ZF 8. Ford has problems with their 10R80. Toyota has had problems for 4 years now with the Tacoma’s 6-sp auto. Ram’s 8-sp actually had problems for the first 2 or 3 years that were identical to the complaints mentioned on the class action web page.
Yep and why no class actions against the other brands that you say have troubles ??
Let me help you out with your answer !!!
GM has ZERO CUSTOMER SERVICE !!!
GM simply does NOT no how or CHOOSES NOT TO treat a CUSTOMER like humans.
To GM the CUSTOMER is like the all mighty dollar.
CUSTOMER = dollars in.
Warranty = dollars out.
Plain and simple !!!
Ok let just put this to you?
In this transmission case GM has replaced Converters, Transmissions, programming, now 3 different kinds of fluids. If none of that has worked they have bought back vehicles.
Where in this is there no customer service?
What more do you want?
Can you pin point exactly what is wrong here causing the. Issue?
Plain and simple what do you expect in this case that has not been done?
Please note the latest fluid appears to be working to this point with those who have had it. It is too soon for it to be declared the solution but right now it appears to be the fix for the minority of owners who are having this issue.
Plain and simple they have been searching for a solution proven by the evidence in the TSB’s and the many things they have been doing have been documented.
About the only thing left after a buy back is to have the folks at the tech center executed just to please you.
Stop playing the troll victim that has no skin in this game.
Yes, that would be sufficient if every owner was treated to that standard, however that isn’t the case.
I,m always up to a challenge scott3,
After all I drive newer GM stuff, Ha, Ha, Ha,
Lets see, ANY other product you purchase in the WORLD today if it does not work as advertised will be replaced or you can return for your full purchase price.
I am not a autoworker and for sure would NEVER work for a union !!!!
The only vehicle interest I have is making mine go down the road.
However I do own my own business, Contracting, Construction related stuff, Renewable energy, New tech stuff.
So lets say I build a house, the new homeowner has I think 7 years to make sure things are ok.
Like your comment of In this transmission case GM has replaced Converters, Transmissions, programming, now 3 different kinds of fluids. If none of that has worked they have bought back vehicles.
OK if I were to roof a house and the roof leaks, it doesn’t matter haw many times I replace the shingles if the roof still leaks the roof is NOT fixed !!!!
Do you think the homeowner cares how many times I replace the roof material if it still leaks ? Would you ? I’ll help you with this answer because I think you still can not figure out FIXED !!!! the answer is NO, NO, NO !!!!
I know that was a simple analogy but simple things for simple people.
Also I DID, I DID, agree with you if your transmission was fixed that YOU, YOU, YOU did get GOOD, GOOD, GOOD, CUSTOMER SERVICE.
BUT AGAIN, BUT AGAIN, not ALL the people with these problems are getting the same treatment as YOU !!!!!!
If everyone with these problems were getting the same treatment as you, they would be happy with a good working vehicle and that is why they bought one. NOT ONE person buys a new vehicle because they want to live with troubles, they want a new trouble free vehicle !!!!!
You are using ALOT of PLAIM AND SIMPLE, plain and simple this, plain and simple that.
Here is my plain and simple If you GM can not make a vehicle perform as advertised or expected ( you know 8 speed with 8 gears ).
This should be simple for you as you yourself have stated some of these work good.
OK take the one that works and compare it to the one that does not, if you can not get the rest to work like the one that does give the owner THEIR MONEY back !!!!! ALL THEIR MONEY !!! the CUSTOMER spent THEIR MONEY on your, GM’s product, and expected it to perform as the AVERAGE MASS PRODUCED products similar have .
If GM has all this cash to invest in the future and pay dividends, why cant they fix the product that has made that possible ??
If a 10 speed is the answer, install a 10 speed in these vehicles with a new module program it and fixed.
All GM is doing is passing the buck !!!! and people like you are facilitating the transaction.
I do NOT want people to lose there jobs or “get executed as you said”
The engineers know how to fix this they just are not allowed to spend the money to do it.
ARE YOU SERIOUS !!!! You think this can’t be fixed, you think there is no one on the planet Earth that can solve this problem !!
As I have said I do not see myself as a victim, and have never said I was a victim.
I have said GM as a company has HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE, and still do !!!!!
And I do have “skin in the game” I drive GM stuff and pay to have the KNOWN FAULTY PARTS fixed.
I’m also still glad to hear your name calling skills are still in tact.
Here we go again.
Have a good day !!!!!
OK lets put this to you.
If GM sold 800,000 Silverado trucks, add all the other applications of this 8 speed how many do you get in 5 years ?
We will just guess for this and say 500,000 a year.
Take that times 5 years of purchase parts to get the good GM quantity deal that’s 2 million 5 hundred thousand of them. 2,500,000. OK !
So lets say on this junk the failure rate is higher than the average bell shaped failure curve at even 5 %.
That is 125,000 of these transmissions with troubles !!!!
OK now lets say 95% got treated GREAT, GREAT just like you by the HORRIBLE GM CUSTOMER SERVICE !!
That’s six thousand two hundred and fifty 6,250 people who got treated like CRAP again by the HORRIBLE GM CUSTOMER SERVICE.
And I would be willing to bet a large sum that those numbers are figured light.
So out of 2 million people, you scott3, think ALL people are treated just like you !!!!
I would also be willing to bet that out of ALL the people who are having troubles or have had troubles OVER HALF feel they were treated poorly by the HORRIBLE GM CUSTOMER SUPPORT.
Again have a nice day !!
Well lets get this back to Reality.
#1 the difference in good service and bad service is not so much a GM issue but a dealer issue.
The bad dealers have been a problem for the big three for decades. Most have too many dealers and with the franchise system they can not off these dealers even if they want to. GM tried to close a good number of poor dealers at the bail out but the government stopped them.
GM has tried to strangle the dealers with the surveys they send out by penalizing them with less allocation of good product and cutting of discounts.
The only real way out is to buy the dealers out but even GM does not posses that kind of money.
As for changing the 8 speeds to 10 speeds in not possible. The problems there is not just the cost of the new transmission which is the least of the issue. The problems come in that all new testing for crash and emissions would need to be done at billions on each model. The fact the 10 speed may not even fit in most vehicles.
The cost of all the other related parts is a major factor too. we are talking sifters computer programs, drive shafts, transfer cases etc.
Then there is the hacked up nature to do this to many customer vehicles that could also lead to other problems that could come up in the future.
As for looking at the trucks with no problems and comparing them to those that are. It has been done. Often problems are not apparent and that is why the search for a cure goes on.
Non of this is an excuse or taking sides these are real factors that are in play here.
Even if a software issues could fix this that would put the vehicle out of compliance with emission the government would not permit it.
The reality is majority of these vehicles have not had an issue. Yes a larger than normal number have had issues. The search goes on and right now the latest fluid that arrived in January appears to be working. We may have a answer to this finally but I am waiting longer to make sure as moving to summer could change that dynamic.
I can tell you are not in the automotive field as you really show you have no clue to even part of what all is involved.
If GM is so bad just move on. Then complain about the next MFG you chose.
I have some issue with your attitude that you “would never work for a Union”!
More and more, the GOP (Greedy Old Pricks) party has been doing what they are best at – lying, deceiving, and manipulating “We the People” in order to help the 1%ers, the multinational corporations, and the military-industrial complex (the one that Eisenhower(!) warned us about on his last day of office) to make inceasingly greater profits. (Secret fact: While GOP politicians SAY they are for immigration restrictions, they secretly SUPPORT allowing immigrant workers in to keep wages down. Their latest deception is Duhhhmp’s new “skilled worker” immigration requirement. That’s so they can reduce professional-level wages for American-born workers! )
To that end, the Repugnantcans have been spewing ALL kinds of BS to turn the typical ‘dumbed-down’ American into being anti-Union – the latest deception being over “right-to-work” laws (this misleading name even makes me nauseous!) Why? So that they can pay Americans as little as possible, and have no/little worker protections or regulations!
So, the next time you want to ignorantly diss Unions – run this list thru your mind of how ALL Americans have benefitted from Union activity (including you, unless you were born “with a silver spoon in your hand!”): [the following is NOT a complete list]
ALL Breaks at Work (including Meal Breaks) – 8-Hour Work Day – 5-day Work Week – 40 Hour Work Week
Minimum Wage – Overtime Pay – Holiday Pay – Compensation Evaluations & Increases (Raises) – Sick Leave – Military Leave – Pregnancy and Parental Leave – Bereavement Leave – FMLA – Paid Vacation
Employer-provided Health Care Insurance – Employer-provided Dental, Life, and Vision Insurance – Pensions – Social Security – Unemployment Insurance – Worker’s Compensation Insurance – Temporary Disability Insurance
Child Labor Laws – Laws Ending Sweatshops in the United States – Public Education for Children – Employee Polygraph Protection Act (Prohibits Employer use of a lie detector on an employee) – Collective Bargaining Rights for Employees – Employee’s Right to Strike – Wrongful Termination Laws – Civil Rights Act / Title VII (Prohibits Employer Discrimination) – Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 – Privacy Rights – Workplace Safety Standards and Regulations – Occupational Safety & Health Act (OSHA) – Veteran’s Employment and Training Services (VETS) – Equal Pay Acts of 1963 & 2011 (Requires employers pay men & women equally for the same type & amount of work) – Sexual Harassment Laws – Whistleblower Protection Laws – Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA)
I had the fluid changed and the shudder has seemingly gotten worse. At $300.00 a pop im reluctant to keep doing it.
But Corvettes are so Purdy! That makes up for all ills. Keep them parked in garage and wax them. Like a full size diecast model! lol…. Here comes C8 – with a dual clutch….ouch
The most irresponsible & undocumented post I’ve read in a while . Since we now have your opinion on everything from how others should post to capitalism maybe you can lay low for a while while others exchange ideas.
8,400 miles and getting a torque converter replace imagine that stress of having issues with a new canyon.
I have a 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 It only has 80 thousand miles on it. I have never towed nothing with this truck and babied like no other. A week or so ago I started having a shuttering in the truck and I took it to a GM dealer and what the hell. The torque converter was the shuttering, and it was slipping between first and third gear and it had metal shavings in the fluid they advised me to replace it all. I actually emailed the president of GMC and I did get a response and they advised me to take it to the dealer and they would see what they could do to help. They advised me also they would call the dealer to acquire what the damages was their self and go from there. Well, long story short they did not call at all. They are not doing a dam thing about it. Their service is as bad as their trucks. If they are not going to stand behind their word or their trucks, they don’t need to lie to the working people out here working their but off trying to make a living in this God-Awful world and trying to keep up maintenance on a vehicle that is obviously a piece of crap to boot. GMC has no customer service.
Resident GM fanboi Scott. Making excuses for a brand new transmission going out. On his own vehicle. Wow. The sooner your dense generation dies out the better. GM will go with you.
Just proves you can’t handle the truth in your world of hate.,
I still don’t know why you and your little whinny friend are here.
What about all the complaints on the Taco transmission? They shift terrible slow and clunky. You would think in the many years they have made it they would have sorted out something by now.
Wishing people dead wow that is classy.
Well your on GM Authority. I think GM fanboi’s are there thing. I mean who spends there time going onto a (insert brand here) forum and calls everyone a fanboi related too (insert brand), unless they are a tool….
I think I was called a little whinny friend !!! Ha, Ha, Ha,
Still not sure how that helps solve the transmission troubles or make the buying public aware that GM has ZERO CUSTOMER SUPPORT, but hey scott3 you be you !!!
Meanwhile in the real world of HORRIBLE GM CUSTOMER SERVICE, REAL PEOPLE, MANKIND, AMERICANS, WORKERS, DOERS, SOLDIERS, MOMS, DADS, GRANDPAS, GRANDMAS, are having trouble with a GM product, they the CUSTOMER payed for, and you call names, make excuses, and blame.
O well, here we are again !!!
Hope you have a great day !!
But they won’t help….
I had a 16 Silverado it failed at 62k “the first time” I was offered no mileage forgiveness. Found it funny that the warranty changed from 100k to 60k in 16?. Hmm… 5grand and 18k miles later guess what? Oh, failures again. This time it was the 3rd gear that disintegrated. Along with the shitty transmission, my rear end locked up in a tunnel, my door speakers all failed, infotainment system failed and started glitching, my AC went out as well. Chevy never lifted a finger. I called everyone left voice mails. Had a attorney draft a letter head as well. No action by GM… I am a 90% disabled veteran and used this truck for work. I needed them to do the right thing and help me but guess what? They diddnt. So, I traded that pile of scrap on a Subaru and won’t look back. I hope GM literally goes under. It’s because of the Government regulations that they suck as bad as they do. After the bail out, GM basically had its balls clipped. I won’t buy anything from GM post year 2000. Had 4 90s model blazers and Tahoe’s and you can’t kill them. They are tough as nails and ran like scalded dogs for over 300k a pop. What happened? When did we loose pride in production and the ability to stand behind the work. GM needs to reap the harvest of misdeeds and lies.
Semper Fi.

“The hard shift in first gear is when it is cold. More load the smoother it is. Once warm it is gone.”
I don’t know where you get you information from, but this statement is far from true. Mine shifts so hard from 1st to 2nd and back down that if feels like I’ve been rear ended ALL DAY LONG!
I’m pissed as a owner of this pos transmission I’ve been to the dealer 3 times for them to do software updates no fix then GM main customer support sent me to a gm dealership and they found 3 bolts missing seals missing and replaced a harness truck ran good for a week now it’s even worse so back to shop for the 4th time and still no resolve now how would you feel paying 55k for a truck that has no power with the hard shifts and clunks and all the dealership dummys are saying is it’s the characteristics of the transmission it’s called “the 1-2 clunk”
I have same problem 2019 colorado been to dealer twice. First time they said they changed converter. Started doing it again violently this time. They had truck two days and said they couldn’t get ti to do it. It did it on the way home but they closed so I couldn’t show them.
My 2019 Chevy Colorado rolled backwards on me while I was cleaning the carpet, after I removed my key out of the ignition. Be careful, I took my truck back the 1st week after purchasing it. I’m seeking an attorney to take my case.
Needs to be class action law suit. My truck same problems heard shifts clunck slamming gears revs no acceleration creating bad has milage stick in wrong gear. You it to dealership 2xs. I’m calling today to complain. They have me 500 miles to test drive the 2nd problem. They flushed 3xs tran oil and replaced with new. Does not resolve the issue. What’s my recourse?
New 6/2016 2016 Yukon worked on 9/2017 with 39K miles – new fluid etc. Now today (7/2022) at 104K mild shutter is back.
What kind of damage will happen if I continue to drive it?
Are there any relevant issues to the GM 9 speed transmission? I drive a 2018 GMC Terrain and have had weird occurrences. My auto start stop has prevented my vehicle from accelerating after coming to complete stop. Happened 3 times in last 4 months. Plus one occurrence of not accelerating on the I-75 in metro Detroit. Basically was merging and needed to speed up a little bit and the Terrain freaked out. The revs went up to 5k rpm and I could not accelerate. Took it to the dealership, and they could not replicate my issues.
Check out the Cadillac XT4 sites on the ” new 9 speed ”
I don’t research the GMC, Chevrolet, or Buick version of the same thing.
I am a Cadillac guy so I stick to that.
There are issues, I just hope you and your dealer get along good because GM has no customer support !!
Gm is not the only one having issues with newer transmissions. Remember unlike 20 years ago these transmission are mostly controlled by a computer so they try to make them shift as smooth as possible but at times you will have a hiccup. Not saying there is not a problem with the 8 speed but it seems it not as many as this lawsuit is claiming. FCA 9 speed still is a problem and so is Honda’s but where are the lawsuits against them. Seems GM is a easy target for lawyers.
There are no lawsuits against the others because the automotive manufacturers are working with their CUSTOMERS !!
This is a practice that to this day eludes GM.
CUSTOMERS, you mean we have a responsibility to the CUSTOMER.
We are GM we only have a responsibility to the stock price.
That is a bold lie. GM worked with me on my issue with a full replacement on my issue. GM is working with others on this shudder issue. The TSB’s have outlined this and many have had the work done. The problem is they are not fully sure what is going on.
If you are so enlightened then tell us what is causing the issues and what GM needs to do to to fix this?
As we speak now the fluid change is $300 for fluid alone and are being done daily. This is after they have already changed converters and done flushes before. Owners are given loaner vehicles etc. If that is not working with the customer I am not sure what you expect.
Right now it would be cheaper to pay you a large sum to find the repair vs a bunch of lawyers.
What is a bold lie?
I am confused with your response.
Unlike your BOLD LIE of not having troubles with your transmission after having it replaced.
I did NOT say GM did not work with YOU.
I said GM has not worked with ALL.
This is NOT a lie.
WHY WOULD YOU SUE if GM IS WORKING WITH YOU AT THEIR EXPENCE ?
There are ALOT of people NOT getting done what you got done !!!!
There are ALOT of people NOT getting loaner vehicles !!!!!!
I will ENLIGHTEN you how to fix this MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If GM wanted this problem fixed they would spend the MONEY and direct the resources to FIX it.
Since GM is a CUT and RUN business they are now spending that same MONEY on the future !!!!
The 9 speed and the 10 speed, CUT and RUN !!!!
I am ok with spending the money on the future but if you think this SIMPLE automatic transmission trouble cant be fixed when man kind can have a rover driving around on Mars you are crazy.
The truth is GM spends where they see fit. As long as the sales are ok they spend that profit elsewhere.
But GM is always just barley good enough. The new truck is now loosing out to a RAM, a RAM for Christ sake !!
Making up excuses for not allocating enough money to build something robust is the exact thing I am talking about with the 10 speed NOT ALLISON.
Sure Allison has troubles, just like ALL mechanical equipment does, but NOT, NOT, NOT at the rate GM does, and their stuff is in heavy trucks.
The government this the EPA that, EXCUSE. IT IS AN EXCUSE on why you cant do something.
I can’t do my homework because my shoe is untied, like that !!!!
You don’t have to feed me with a line of glory days of past when everything was easier.
Its just not true !!!!!!!!
The same kind of problems of today are the same kind of problems of the past, just different !!!
Mankind has always had challenges and troubles, and solved it.
There was no excuse ” it is damn hard to build a car ” when the first one was built.
You think all the inventors and doers of the WORLD are sitting around ” I quit, this is damn hard ”
NO they figure out how to do it and make it work !!!
For some reason you think I am playing the victim. The only thing I am a victim of is for some reason thinking GM cared about THEIR CUSTOMER !!
All my vehicles are doing just fine at my expense, no beef in fixing the troubles that arise from normal wear and tear.
Its the WELL KNOWN, WELL DOCUMENTED, troubles I have issue with.
The BLATEN disregard for PEOPLE, MAN KIND.
Well that 2 cent spring we know causes trouble, but that’s ” good enough ”
And on, and on, and on, and on !!!
But just so you know, I do NOT make excuses and I do NOT lie !!!!!!
But you sure do whine a lot.
What do I whine a lot about ?
I have no vehicle issues !!
All the vehicles I own are working fine at this time.
I am not the ones that are in all the lawsuits with GM.
You can’t reason with the mentally damaged.
I believe our friend is just a troll for someone like Unifor or some other anti GM organization.
Or they are just simple a mental train wreck.
All I know is that I had a 2011 Cruze . The automatic tranny was a joke. It’s quirks never got resolved. Later, GM added start/stop to the mix. It killed the Cruze and all of it’s kind. I’m surprised the issues never killed trucks and Vettes. But, I guess the trucks and Vettes fill a certain void in the hearts of owners that nothing else can fill. Even with problematic and quirky performance. All this, and GM doesn’t put a dual injection system to save owners big money when the Gunk Up begins. Direct Inj only? How Ancient can you get?
Any known issue with 2014 model year Silverado? Transmission toast at 124,000 miles.
We had problems with the transmission in our Silverado, traded it off and bought the 2019 GMC Sierra Denali, MORE transmission problems – won’t pull anything, shudders and hard shifts. Ther re no transmissions available because of all the replacements in our area and a used one is $8,300. We have owned GM Products for most of our lives (64 years old). We are not looking forward to going into retirement with a new vehicle payments and were planning on fishing daily. An electric vehicle will not pull our boat so that is out! This really is an issue and does not appear that GM is solving it and the dealers here are backed up for months with no replacement parts for temporary fixes. My family does not believe in class action lawsuits but GM is leaving no other solution. The dealers are tired of hearing about the issues most every one is having and customer service is getting worse and worse. Not sure what our solution will be, we have attempted the fluid change and are trying that again with the blue label. They are pulling the pan tomorrow and hopefully will fins no more metal shavings. We also are starting the moving process and pulling a trailer, appears we will be out even more money to rent a truck that will pull the trailer – many loads and many miles. THIS SUCKS!!! I personally will have to be hard pressed to buy another GM product.
Scott3, sorry you are totally wrong. They have replaced your transmission and changed your fluids given you a loaner car. They did not do this for me and I have had all the GM service I want. They are liars just do what ever it takes to get you till warranty is up. Then it is your problem, as for resale of these POS transmissions equipped vehicles the owners get screwed on value. GM and the dealers new of the problem and did not advise. New truck with worthless warranty, at what point is GM responsible for the product they produced and sold as a good product. The reality is they new it was no good and want to get by as cheap as they can and will use the courts to an advantage as people need transportation and have to settle or move on. Try to buy american made things but this is why I will never buy another GM product.
I agree 100% they need to be held accountable for this junk.
Wish Ford’s DPS6 issues were this widely known, they might have gotten a better settlement.
My local Stealer wasn’t ordering any 1500 series trucks with the A8. If that is raising the Red Flag. My A6 trans does weird stuff as well and the shudder feels like clutches slipping or the apply band due to low pressure or an MPS. General Motors is going to be like Chrysler Motor Co. was in the 80’s and 90’s.
With all the problems with the redesigned 8-sp in the 2019 Ram, they’ll be holding onto their trans isssue stays for a while yet. What’s really funny is that when they finally started using the 8-sp, Ram had a TON of problems that are identical to the complaints in this lawsuit. Torque converter problems and hard shifts.
Ben Smitty,
Have the RAM owners had to start a lawsuit yet ?
I haven’t heard.
But if and when the CUSTOMER of RAM has to stoop to a lawsuit it will be because of how their customer was and is treated by FCA.
Unlike GM who as a company has ZERO CUSTOMER SUPPORT, I hear RAM is working endlessly to try to cater to the needs of their CUSTOMERS, people, humans, who spent their hard earned dollars on a RAM product.
I have stated my opinion here o so much, and it has not changed.
ALL, ALL, ALL, ALL mechanical devises made by mankind have troubles, ALL, ALL.
Vehicle companies have good somethings, and bad somethings.
Its how the CUSTOMER is treated that makes the difference.
GM in its glory days treated the CUSTOMER with respect, tried to help, FESSED up to their mistakes, IMO.
The GM of today is take, take, take, and your only recourse as a CUSTOMER is to sue, or write on the forums to spread awareness !!
We’ve had both a 2015 and 2017 yukon xl denali with this transmission. It sounds like its ready to fall apart on you. The dealership said it was something to do with software issue and “updated” it, but still worse than ever…biggest piece of junk…thats why we dont buy gm any more….
Let’s face it. There is just no real need for anything more than a 6 speed auto trans. Period.
I recall quite well selling Buick’s back in the late 80’s/90’s with the 4L60E trans (at least I think that’s the code for it). These cars were big, had a great ride, handled well (especially with the touring suspension), had plenty of power and they would easily get over 30 MPG’s on highway cruising. Makes me think of the old saying, if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it! Now back to today where nothing has less than a 6 speed. Why? You take a full sized Volvo S90 with the T5 turbo 4cly and the 8 speed and it won’t get any better MPG than the Park Avenue Buick did with a NA 3800 V6 and 4 speed. What gives?
I agree, my old modded TBSS had around 500hp but was getting over 20 mpg at 80mph with luggage and a/c on with the 4L70E and nearly 30mpg under the same circumstance with a V8 GP with the 4L60E. Unless America gets unrestricted highways IMO its no need for more than 4-6 gears but have to stay with the times with today’s 10 speeds.
All I can say is I have a Silverado 17 that has a shake that gm cannot fix after 6 tries ,it’s in the drivetrain ,marry Barra making 20 mill a year and not standing behind there biggest money making product , hope u can speak Spanish Marry
2016 GMC Sierra SLT/4X4/Z71 I had the truck one week and brought it back for Transmission hunting for gears and slipping, they told me they could not reproduce the problem. Brought it back for first oil change reported the same problem. They changed the fluid. Second oil change flushed the Torque coverter and changed fluid. Third oil change they changed the torque converter. fourth oil change replaced the valve body. Going back in shortly because now back to original problem and slipping and banging from reverse to forward, the problem is real not sure if i qualify for lemon Law but will explore.
Update. My GMC Sierra SLT/4X4/Z71 is at the Dealership now for a week, they are replacing the Clutch Plates. I will update, hopefully this repair action will improve the performance of the transmission.
Update on my April 25th post, prior visits to the Service Dept. they have replaced the Torque converter and the Valve Body.. My GMC Sierra SLT/4X4/Z71 is at the Dealership now for a week, they are replacing the Clutch Plates. I will update, hopefully this repair action will improve the performance of the transmission.
i have had my 2017 Colorado in the dealership 6 times for a slipping transmission, they “flashed” the software 4 times, replaced the torque converter, replaced the fluid with full synthetic and i still have slipping issues..
I have a 2016 Cadillac CTS that does these things–and a 2018 corvette that is smooth as silk. I took the Cadillac into the dealer and they did a bunch of things to it and it is better –but not perfect (as a Cadillac should be) by any means. Not sure what I should do now.
Well Ross,
When you have nowhere else to turn because GM has HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SUPPORT, IMO
You will end up mingling and meeting several others who have had to experience the GM LACK of CUSTOMER SUPPORT, and find the only option is said lawsuit.
I know its SAD, and I personally would not do it.
However with GM you have only two options.
Lawsuit.
Or simply purchase another brand of vehicle.
Myself, I simply fix the problem and move on, however this solution is at your expense.
If you personally are unable to fix the issue. Take your vehicle to a transmission shop, or a tuner shop, and tell them you want it fixed, change the transmission out until you get a good one.
It will be expensive, but it will be fixed !!!!
GM will never spend the money it will take to fix the issue for you, the CUSTOMER, GM just wants you to buy the new product with the “new improved thinngy”
Good luck !!!
My 2016 with the six speed was kept in 2wd also. 122000 I barely made it home from a 12 hr drive. A new transmission and $4300 later I have had it back to GM because it is already slipping after 10000 miles. They will do NOTHING until it goes out or leaves me stranded. Thanks GM! Soon to be a Toyota owner. Good luck
Perhaps they should just start buying the transmissions from Toyota?
In reading the various comments, I noted that some folks have mentioned having shakes and weird behavior on their 6 speeds as well as those folks complaining about the 8 speed. Our 2013 Suburban, with a 6 speed, has spent many days in the dealers garage trying to solve the vibrations we experience. When the car was new, they were not there. It began to become noticeable around 70 thousand miles and has gotten worse since then. Also, it got worse after the first transmission flush. Now that we’re over 97 thousand miles, it’s almost constant at any speed below 40 mph. It also makes strange noises once in a while, starting up a steep hill. And it’s always kept in 2 wheel drive. Actually, I miss our 2007 with the 4 speed.
I don’t have very noticeable issues when driving but my 2018 Silverado with the 8-speed has been in to the dealer for a transmission/torque converter related issue and what I would call a very serious one at that. My truck, when shifting from park to drive, after starting for the first time in the AM has chirped the rear tires and left 12″ tire marks on the concrete as it lurched forward over a foot. Of course it was not reproducible at the dealership and has only happened 1 more time.
I currently own a 2017 Cadillac ATS Premium Luxury which I ordered new.It has the 3.6 V6 with the 8L45 8 speed transmission. The transmission is Horrible..From my experience it is mainly the 1st-2nd upshift (will slip very badly and then “bang into 2nd gear. Also while braking the the vehicle will lunge forward while downshifting from 2nd to 1st gear.It is an intermittent problem(happening approx., 20-30 % of the time) But when it does it is really bad.Love the car, hate the transmission.Hope General Motors does come up with a fix for this problem
This very serious defect is not limited to the 8 speeds. The 6 speeds are also experiencing the same torque converter problems.I have had to purchase 3 different trucks in the last 2 years. All of them have has failing transmissions. First one was 2017 Silverado the 2nd one was 2017 sierra and the 3rd was 2018 Elevation. All these trucks had the 6 speed transmissions. Delaminating torque converters were the main cause which intern lead to failed valve body and pump assembly.GM is on the edge of completely falling apart over this issue. The transmission are unfixable.I just got my 2018 back from dealership 2 weeks ago and just yesterday the truck developed a long delay going into drive after using reverse. The RPM rises before gear ingauges ,then goes in with a loud and aggressive clunk bang.3 trucks in a row. This in my experience can only be a factory defect.I know there is a lot of un happy 6 speed owners out there, class action will soon include 6 speed as well.
Reality — scott3 wants to get back to reality !!
Well lets see if your talking to a GM customer support agent right now, your reality is you are having a bad day !!
#1 I like that #,
Good and bad dealers, I AGREE there are both !! They are ALSO GM dealers !!! I know GM does not own them however they are selling and servicing GM products.
When the CUSTOMER has trouble with a GM dealer what does the CUSTOMER do ? Answer CALL GM !!!!!
If you are saying there are good and bad, and I AGREE !!! than GM should have a GM service center to offset the CUSTOMER who has a BAD DEALER. Maybe one, may be three, in the US.
You know when you call GM and they want to place blame on the dealer for their mistakes, you could eliminate the problem and get to the source!!
Again if the dealer has been the problem for DECADES, ——-FIX THE PROBLEM——–
If I had the SAME PROBLEM for DECADES, I would have FIXED THE PROBLEM by now!!!!! ( blame, blame, blame )
I’m not even going to go there and read ALL of the franchise laws of every state but I will trust you that the reason GM cant fix this transmission trouble is the dealers fault !!!! WOW !!!!!!
The only way out, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, GM doesn’t have to buy the dealers out BUY BACK THE TRUCKS from the CUSTOMER !!!!
Give the CUSTOMER a NEW TRUCK, seems like GM has plenty of the new ones sitting around right now. ( that was a jab if you didn’t get it )
I again am NOT going to check your cost analysis of BILLIONS, BILLIONS per model, BILLIONS, per model ???
No wonder GM is making so many models, should we list them all ? is this the place ? lets just guess again and say 25 models at BILLIONS per. Is that two BILLION or ten BILLION per ? Maybe 100 BILLION per that sounds better, still BILLIONS.
Now YOU think I have no understanding of this automotive world. However I did work in the automotive component field for 15 years, so there is that. I have served on a SAE team setting SAE standards for a automotive component. I have my name on an automotive component, US patent, I have sat through HOURS and HOURS of ” Black Belt “, ISO, QS, OSHA, and so many safety training meetings that it makes me sick I waisted that much time on people trying to teach people how to do a quality job !!!, but you just keep going down that line of thought, matters zip to me.
Now to the Software, I have also written software believe it of not !! So here we go with that.
I also agree that the software plays a roll in some. Like my own Canyon with the 3.6 – 6 speed, the trouble with those ( or mine ) is the 3.6 has NO torque at 1200 RPM and GM programmers had it do the “quick upshift ” I am assuming for fuel standards. With this “quick upshift” the torque converter locked up and CHUG, CHUG, CHUG, CHUG, as you accelerated the torque converter then would unlock, lock, unlock, lock, and just make matters worse.
A simple shift tune fixed ALL this, AND, AND, AND improved the mileage ( calculated mileage by miles and gallons ). As per GOVT, I’m sure the emission testing plays a roll hear, but the correlation between real world and test world is NOT accurate. As the driver accelerates the vehicle revs so much higher than ” test” environment that it uses MORE fuel and there fore MORE emissions. At least mine did ( back to real world ) !!!!!
So as YOU stated ” majority of these vehicles have NOT had an issue ” I would it think the LEAST EXPENSIVE thing for GM to do is BUY BACK or REPLACE with new there KNOWN FAULTY PRODUCT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
NOT go to YOUR EXTREME and buy out dealers or spend BILLIONS, again BILLIONS, recertifying a model !!!
As far as me moving on and complaining, AGAIN those are YOUR WORDS !!
I don’t feel as I am complaining, I feel as I am just stating FACT !!
Just like I feel YOU are making EXCUSES !!!!
In the end it will not matter what either of us feel, GM will spend the LEAST amount of MONEY to try to solve this problem, and HUGE amounts of money trying to convince people it was someone else’s fault that. Wait for it !!!
GM engineered, spec’d, ordered, paid for, assembled, marketed, and sold this product. !!!!!
NOBODY ELSE DID —– GM DID.
AGAIN, all of my GM vehicles are working fine !!
I don’t even own one of these 8 speeds !!
I have talked to GM CUSTOMER service, if that is what they want to call it, and can relate to NO CUSTOMER SERVICE.
Here we go STILL .
Have a GOOD day !!!!
HAHA NOW ITS TIME FOR YOU ALL TO MEET THE CVT TRANSMISSION AND NOT JUST BY GM
We are all in agreement that GM produced a defective transmission. There are no remedies to correct the problem. First, it should be against the law to produce and continue to produce defective vehicles. Then provide no recourse to the consumer. Can anyone help me???
GM is not taking responsibility for their mistake but it’s on the consumer.
Had a 2018 Colorado. Numerous trips to dealer for transmission issues fuel pump failure contacted gm consumer support that was a sad joke they told me they couldn’t help me to deal with dealer that couldn’t help because GM didn’t have a cure. Traded it for a Toyota and lost 10 grand. No more gm
Well as a consumer class action lawsuits really aren’t good for anyone but the lawyers. BUT personally I’m glad GM is finally going to have to answer for these eight speeds. At least SOMEBODY will get some satisfaction.
For me – right now I’m at one torque converter replacement, two full flushes, and two PCM reprograms. Still experiencing the same problems that started at 16,000 miles. My technician says the valve body is slowly dying, but when he hit the GM tech line up they will not authorize replacing the part. I did get a second reprogram that did nothing. Further, based on the tech line response the dealer advised the next time I bring it in I’ll need to prepay a ”diagnostic fee” for them to attempt an in-warranty repair.
The maddening thing (besides dealing with that joke ”GM Customer Care” executive office 800 number) is that there are multiple TSBs out on my two issues, and GM will not authorize action in my case. I’m stuck with hard shifts, delays in engaging gears, holding a gear only upshifting at an unnaturally high RPM at part throttle, and lately a transmission that sometimes acts like it’s in neutral when leaving from a dead stop such as a traffic light or stop sign before taking off.
Now I’m stuck with a three and a half year old car that probably has a four page Carfax that will destroy any ability to retain any resale value. I’ve been brand loyal – this is our sixth Corvette, but I’m done here. I just do not understand why GM will not fix this car. It seems all they are interested in is to band-aid it out of warranty.
I’m happy for you guys that had their cars/trucks successfully repaired. I really wish I could get the same.
Have a 6 speed transmission in a 2013 Buick Enclave.
It is now out if warranty. I took it to Randy Reed Buick twice when the car was under warranty and told the the transmission has issues. They said that if something is wrong with the transmission the check engine light would come on. The check engine light never came in. Now I need a new transmission as the car shakes and shudders so bad that I do not drive it
I just got my 2015 Traverse back from the dealership. Barely out of warranty at just under 86,000 miles, but GM agreed to pay 60%. So I paid $1400, & then sime other issues popped up after they rebuilt the tranny. The torque converter had metal shavings, no warning light sensor at all, same or similar symtoms as your vehicle. The parts that were damaged in the transmission were the 3 wave plates. Apparently those plates were made of a Chinese metal that was very inferior and week and cheap. Plus the way the cooling of the transmission fluid is designed on the vehicle is not sufficient enough either. Unfortunately in my case, since I got a 2-year 24,000 mile warranty on the transmission work I will void the warranty if I put an external transmission cooler on my Traverse. If you can’t afford to replace a transmission, I will get rid of that thing and get yourself like a Toyota 4Runner or a Toyota Highlander.
At the moment, my Traverse appears to be running fine right now with the transmission work they did, but my optimism isnt all that high, and the only reason I did pay anything to get it fixed this because it’s paid for already and I don’t want another car payment. If you do get it fixed and take it to a transmission place there is an upgraded radiator manufactured by OSC Automotive that is considered a heavy duty radiator for the Traverse. If you have the money available I would replace your OEM radiator with that one and still at an external transmission cooler. This osc Automotive radiator that is considered heavy duty I believe is meant for the traverses with the towing package. But why not put it on the regular Traverse or your vehicle if it’s already having heating issues. Good luck! I’ve been learning and doing research as the problems keep coming up on my Traverse and I believe your vehicle is similar to mine.
We had a 2016 Tahoe, everything went wrong with that car. We started noticing the transmission hesitating at first, then it graduated to a shudder, then finally total transmission failure at 90,000 miles. We replaced the transmission (GM covered half after months of back and forth) Then About a month later the catalytic converter went, then finally the engine a month after that. We rebuilt the engine and traded it in for a Toyota Hylander. All total we probably put close to $30,000 into that car for repairs. I loved the look of the Tahoe and still do, but it is the biggest lemon on the road! Buyer beware!
Well my 2016 Camaro is now in the dealership shop where I purchased it new 12/31/2016 it has had the torque converter changed the transmission flushes and fluid replaced with full synthetic fluid.about 3 weeks ago at 34,700 miles now 500 miles later it’s back in the same shop with the same shudder and jerk and now if your stopped at a stoplight occasionally it will lunge while your holding the brake.ohh and its driven 99% of the time by my 47 year old wife..and she babies the car!!
I could never figure out what drives GM to do a recall ?
So like the Cadillac SRX this, the headlights will burn out while driving without warning, I would think putting human life in jeopardy.
Or the 8 speed transmission lunging at a stop sign or in a garage, I would think putting human life in jeopardy.
Or the old news now, 2 cent ignition spring, that was a recall years after knowing the problem, which put human life in jeopardy.
But now GM is recalling, according to this site some 364,000 or so, pickup trucks for a fire that might start while plugged into a stationary wall, and not while driving, might cause loss of human life, if it burns down your house while you sleep, and you don’t have the proper smoke alarms and escape plans ?
And has done a recall on about same said truck over emission stuff, might cause loss of total human life if the planet burns up in the future ?
I just don’t get the criteria ?
Recall a Cadillac because the heat seat might start on fire, but we were told it would only happen when remotely started and no human is in the vehicle ?
Again I don’t get the criteria ?
So in my opinion the GM recall system still has more to do with money than human safety ?
And who forces them to do a recall for what reason ?
So, So, So, many class action law suits, lemon law suits, again who makes these decisions and to what criteria ?
And as always for almost anyone who has had the privilege of speaking to a GM customer service rep. My heart goes out to you, as that experience is excruciating at times
So an update on my 2017 Cadillac ATS with the 8L45 8 speed…Had it back to the dealership a week ago and they did a “Refresh Characterization Data” and “Perform Fast Learn” on the transmission due to”the initial fill time of the 2-3-4-6-8,(c4) clutch”..Bulletin #16-NA-361,Document # 4605342…A week later mine seems to be working very good(dramatic difference really)…Hopefully this will help some people with same issue.
I bought a 2019 Chevy Colorado in March 2019, I sent it back to the dealer twice. Once for a malfunction with the driver seat and the second time I complained about my transmission pulling and sounding weird, they checked out the transmission and said it was okay. On May 1, 2019 I encounter another problem, while my car was in park after I removed my keys from the ignition when I closed the door my 2019 Colorado began to roll backwards and it hit the bldg etc. I need to speak to an attorney asap. My email address is [email protected]
Thanks
For the record after buying a 2017 Silverado 1500. I now have 18000 miles on it. At the second dealer oil change I asked my service guy. “Why is this transmission such a piece of sh*t?” Response: “it’s always looking for the best gear to maximize fuel consumption. “.
So it drives like crap for pennies per gallon? My whole gm experience is hindered by a transmission second guessing how I want it to go? Well I don’t want it to hesitate, lurch, slug, slam, slop, shimmy, drop, clunk or chug. So let’s take all those things off the table first. For fifty thousand dollars…… cmon!
Can this transmission be reprogrammed to function only as a transmission and not a fuel saving pos device?
Because in my Hemi experience my #3 cylinder (the fuel saving one) is the one that caused a problem at 110,000 miles. They said I needed a new $ 6500.00 $ Hemi. In a truck that only used fully synthetic it’s whole life.
I would have stuck w the Toyota but that rides like a horse carriage and the fuel consumption is ridiculous.
So where is the happy middle?
In short. Count me in.
I have a 2016 Silverado LTZ with the 8 speed. Almost from the day I took delivery there were annoying issues especially on a cold start. I would put it in reverse and the motor would rev up with little or no movement. After backing out of the garage I would put it in drive, at about this time it would jump forward as others have said ” like someone ran into you”. This was scary enough I would not let my wife get it out. I went to the dealership and was told not only they could not find an issue. I I tolerated it for a number of months before taking it back asking them to keep it and drive it regularly while I was on vacation. They drove it 3 hundred miles and told me there was no problem. A year later I was driving with cruise control on at 60 mph when it began to shake violently. Again I went to the dealership. The torque converter needed replaced at about 33,000 miles. I am now at 46,000 and experiencing the problem at start up. I am not a mechanic but even I know the torque converter is not engaging probably due to lack of fluid, then when the fluid gets there”wham”. At this time I am dealing with GM Customer service.
I own a 2016 Tahoe LT. I believe it has this transmission, yet it’s not on this list. I also owned a 2011 Tahoe LTZ. The 2011 had the transmission crap out at 200K. The 2016 just crapped out at 105. Transmission pump and torque converter. I didn’t have the same issues as described above, but it did shake like it was missing gears, then finally just slipped and wound up. Traded the 2011 in on the 16 when it crapped out. Just had this one repaired and still driving it. Bit it certainly sounds like something inherently wrong. I’m two for two, and very leery of buying another Tahoe or Silverado.
I have a 2019 GMC Sierra with the 6.2L and this beloved 8 speed tranny.
At 1,000 or so miles in I first noticed the issues as Bowden so eloquently notes as “ Well I don’t want it to hesitate, lurch, slug, slam, slop, shimmy, drop, clunk or chug. So let’s take all those things off the table first. For fifty thousand dollars…… cmon!”
I have had it in once at second oil change 10,000 miles for this, but have gotten the same blow off reply that “there is a bulletin but it’s normal”
I now know it’s not acceptable to others and not just me.
Sign me up for the class action. It’s unfortunate that they have not addressed the problem(s) so late in the production cycle.
Truck now as 13,000 miles and still consistently surges in cold starts as well as driveline bump and grind. Also hunts for a gear under light throttle.
I love everything else about this truck the motor is light out awesome but the transmission gets a D-
I had these transmission issues on a new design 2010 Equinox.
What ever happened there.
I have these issues on my 2018 SLT 1500
I bought a 2018 GMC Sierra 6.2 8speed in Dec 2018. I’ve been walking on eggshells ever since. Between the 4/8 cylinder crap and a tranny that can’t make up it’s mind which gear to be in, I’m really disappointed in GM. It’s a beautiful truck with lots of power, but come on. Being a former GM tech, I believe that the problems could be fixed with corrected programming for both engine and trans, but then they probably wouldn’t pass California emissions. I guess engineering only knows how to computerize everything now days, instead of building dependability. I’ve always been a GM man, but these issues could drive a lot of customers away. I know some people have stepped down to danged ‘ol ford or dodge. Come on GM step up and take responsibility for an engineering failure and take care of us that have supported you for so long.
I just bought a 2016 Sierra Denali and I’m very disappointed also the 4/8 is crap the transmission doesn’t know what gear it wants to be in it shifts violently from 1st to 4th gear and hesitates when shifting and then engages when it wants too and jerks the truck very unsatisfied will never by another GM cause they knew about the problem or I should say knew and know and are doing nothing I really hope the class action takes care of us gm owners. Also the 8 speed sucks why not just stick with what was working best I love the truck it’s awesome but the tranny and GM customer service sucks really bad. The dealership where I bought this 50k paperweight is telling me that the problems I’m dealing with are just the characteristics of the transmission and there is nothing they can do, they have also done 5 software updates to the CPU modules and still garbage GM YOU NEED TO COME CORRECT IF YOU WANT TO KEEP LOYAL CUSTOMERS.
After countless positive online reviews I decided to purchase a new 2019 Chevy Colorado and now 3000 miles later I am becoming not only very displeased with the truck but also embarrassed as friends and passengers feel how it jerks and tease me for buying it. I was told at the dealership by the sales person that there were no problems with the transmission and there were no current recalls on the vehicle. Like a fool I believed them. I want to be added to their class action because not only was I duped I was lied to.
I purchased a 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 with the 6 speed transmission. After 120,000 miles on a 10 hour drive back from North Carolina the transmission felt like it was HAMMERING into gear. It started with 5th to 6th and by the time I got to Ohio it barely shifted out of first. When I finally made it back home to Indiana and the GM dealer where I bought it they told me “The tranny is gone, it will have to be replaced.” At JUST a nominal cost of $5000!!! I just bought the truck in December and dont have a choice but to replace the transmission. Hopefully GM will own up to their poor workmanship. It’s hard enough to be able to afford a truck without these kind of repair bills.
IF GM IS HELPING CUSTOMERS WITH THE 8L90 or 8L45 automatic transmission problems then why did GM LOWER THE POWER TRAIN WARRANTY? 12 DAYS AGO I BOUGHT A 16 SILVERADO FROM MAVERICK CHEVROLET/MARSHALL FORD MARSHALL,TX, MAVERICK NEVER INFORMED ME OF ANY TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS,AFTER WE SIGN THE BANK LOAN DROVE IT OFF THE LOT THE TRANSMISSION JERK BAD,I CALLED MAVERICK CHEVY JAMIE SALES MANAGER TELL ME IT IS NOT UNDER WARRANTY..IS THISMWHAT AMERICA HAS COME TO..LIES AND EXCUSES TO SCREW WE THE PEOPLE?
Ugggg 2019 camaro after about800 miles harsh shift from 1st to 2nd on the first shift of the day. Went to dealer was told thats just how they shift. If i knew then what i know now would have never got this pice of s#it. Made 2 payments and hate a new 35000$ car.
2018 chevy silverado screw cab lt. Transmission s issue just like everyone else. New fluid and reprogram. Work fine for 3 weeks and problem come back. Also has ticking noise under the hook at freeway speed. Going back to dealer today. If nothing can be done. Lemon law and lawsuit is my only choice $51k at 8k mile so annoy.
Do I need to do anything to be part of this class action lawsuit. I bought a GMC Canyon SLT. Less then a month ago and it’s already jerking hesitates
I know it’s not listed here, but our 2017 Chevrolet Suburban premier has been doing this very thing. I took it to the dealership yesterday and there was no diagnostic code and the check engine light never came on, so they test drove the truck to duplicate the issue. They said my fluid was good, aside from being slightly burnt and that there is an internal issue inside the transmission, and to replace my transmission it will be 9K- sorry but I just bought the truck last year and yes it was bought used, but it’s a newer truck, transmission shouldn’t be bad already. we recently had to replace the entire a/c line because of a common leak that multiple GM SUV and trucks have and already has a class action suit for that. For a two year truck it is becoming a money pit.
I have a new GMC Sierra 2018 with app. 1700 miles. From day one the transmission has acted up. My problem is going from reverse to 1st to 2nd. If I go very slow from reverse i have no problem. But the least little bit of acceleration it hesitates and jumps into gear. GMC service says they can not find anything wrong which seems to be the standard answer. They told me that with so few miles it is not broke in and is learning what your driving is. It will not be broke in for another 2 or 3000 miles. After that I asked if he has read any of the service bulletins. As far as he knows there are not any. I said it is all over the internet and a class action suit is starting. I don’t know if he thinks because I am a senior citizen or just plain stupid. I could not believe it. This is supposed to be the very reputable dealer.

I bought my truck with 3 miles on it and has acted up from day one also. It shifts hard, lifters tapping at 50,000 miles. My truck has strictly highway miles and yesterday my transmission went kaput and left my daughter and I stranded. What they are telling you is not true. Yours sounds like its doing what mine did and well….at 100,000 you will have to replace it about the time you no longer have a warranty.
2016 Chevy Suburban. Same problem as everyone else. Turns out it’s the torque converter and that leads to rebuilding entire transmission. Anyone know how to include yourself in the class action lawsuit.
We purchased a 2018 GMC Sierra. Immediately I noticed that when I come to a stop it lunges forward. I took it to the dealer a d they told me that was normal. I believed them since it wasn’t that big of a deal. Now we are about at 50,000 miles and it has been clunking into gear, mainly from reverse to 1st, so we took it in to the dealer, they found nothing wrong so my husband pointed out grease which the said was a seal so they replaced it but now its worse clunking into gear changes periodically while I’m driving down the road. We need to be included in this lawsuit!
I just purchased a 2019 brand new Chevy Siverado. I noticed occasionally shifting very hard when taking off after shifting from reverse to drive. It has also done it when pulling out onto the highway from a side road.
Why is the Tahoe not on this list?? We had experienced ALL of these issues with our 2016 Tahoe, which eventually ended in a transmission replacement at around 90,000 miles, followed by an engine rebuild. 55K piece of junk.

So I just purchased a 2016 High Country 2WD about 5 months ago. Just a day after purchase I noticed just how bad the transmission was, and it was nut the bumpy road. I took it back and they claimed to have the fix with the new trans fluid. I admit it resolved probably 90% of the posted problems. The one thing I noticed that I didn’t have prior to the fluid change was a swooshing sound from the transmission in the lower gears that was loud enough to hear with the windows up. It sounded like ‘low’ trans fluid. As you know they removed the dipstick so you cannot check yourself so I took the truck to Nimnicht Chevrolet on the 26th and wouldn’t you know they want to pull the transmission because the new fluid is dingy and smells burnt. Think about that folks. The new fluid might be just a band-aide for a bigger problem but you may never know until a possible catastrophic failure because you no longer have that dipstick to pull to see the dingy, smell the burnt fluid as relayed to me by the service technician. I have a 2020 Colorado 4WD loaner with the 8 speed. Twice when coming to a stop you could feel the transmission bumps at what feels like the front end vice the rear as mine does, yes I was in 2wd. All I can say is I wish I would have kept my 07 Sierra rather than inherent new problems of a 2016.
2018 GMC Sierra 1500 Transmission Issues New Fluid and Reprogram work fine for 5 hr. Back to Legacy. 2and time. Same thing. 3time in my driveway .Stop Pulling Won’t Move.
I have a 2011 Chevy Silverado in which the transmission went out at 90,000 miles it was replaced by Chevrolet and now at 174,000 miles it is going out again. I do no heavy pulling just everyday driving and I am expected to accept that after 80 – 90,000 miles on each transmitted that now I shall have to pay for the next transmission. So therefore that must mean that Chevrolet transmissions are only expected to last 80 – 90,000 miles. Something to think about before I buy another Chevrolet
Been in love with my 2017 sierra slt since day one. Had a couple hick ups here and there but didnt think anything of it. Now at 71000 miles transmission is gone. Biggest expense I ever sprung for and 2 years later it dead. Ridiculous.. Now im torn fix the issue with the money i dont have or trade it in for something else all together.
I have a 2018 Camaro SS that has the 8 speed transmission. It shuddered a lot and has been back to the dealer and received the “flush”. I also have the rear differential moan when the car is cold. My question is what happens when the warranty runs out? What’s the possibility of a lifetime transmission warranty?
I have had my 15 Yukon in three times for the A8 problems listed in the above article. the first time I was told it was my imagination. the second time the flushed the fluid. Today, I told them about abrupt shifting, and they told me they couldn’t feel it…
I have had GM all my life, and the only tranny that I ever felt had a bad shifting issue was the 2 speed powerglide from the 60’s. That’s what this transmission feel like when I put it in gear. The other day, I went to put it gear and it literally felt like someone hit me… and it was not during a cold start while running rich at a higher RPM.
I get that problems are problems and I don’t think they know what to do… But I suppose what ticks me off is that I paid extra for an upgrade engine and tranny, and wish I hadn’t….
GM is aware of the problems and they seem to not care about there customers, I have the provisional patent on the fix to there problems with cvt transmission that would also cure there problems with there class action lawsuits, but they seem not to want to sit down and speak with me in regards to my patent, they would rather watch there GM customers payout thousands of dollars for unnessasary repairs which will not fix the problem, when they could talk to me and see that the correct repair cost about $20.00 and about an hours time, I’m sure you GM customers will get feed up with this and if you really wants your vehicle fixed right, you will find me.
I am not sure how exactly to find you. I tried looking you up on facebook. There is an Orrin Jr. Is that you? I am from Texas and yesterday my transmission messed up and I had to park my truck. It smelled burned. I have been having all of the problems above. It has done it from day one. Do I need to have a rebuild or can you help me? 409-344-6020. If I need to get it to you, I may be able to.
My 2017 GMC 1500 4×4 has the same problems and I know that it is not right the way it shifts and shudders under a slight load going up hill..
Does anyone know about a class action lawsuit for the Chevy Traverse? My wife’s 2015 started slipping gears at 42000 miles. The dealership had convinced me of a “step by step” troubleshooting process that started with a tranny flush. Then all the corona virus crap started & my family tried not to really go anywhere. Then I finally called the dealership & told them the transmission was shuddering. They did a “reprogram” of the transmission module & charged me $300 & they said they took it for a 16 miles test drive & said it was good to go. Wife went back to pick it up from dealership & left the rental there. She called me after picking up our Chevy Traverse and told me there was something still not right with the transmission. But she couldn’t turn around and take it back because she had already turned in the rental car and I told her I’d have to wait a week till my day off to check it out. We took it for a drive on Saturday up to an area with a slight Klein and we had to pass a neighborhood of cabins at a gradual incline & slow down to about 15 to 25 mph. The transmission started shaking violently in the temperature gauge climbed up to 215 from the normal 200°. I didn’t have anywhere to pull out the side of the road till just a little bit further up the road. Finally pulled off & popped the hood open & left the engine idling till the engine temp gauge normalized. We meet at least started to send him back down and headed home. I felt the tranny shutter again as we slowed to make a left turn from the interstate. I took it back to the dealership that following Monday and they’re telling me that it’s now out of warranty. Now the service rep is telling me that it’s going to be up to GM whether or not to pay for the entire repairs will the transmission as it is packed there already torn apart. I’ve done research as to what it is and apparently I’m not the only one that’s had transmission problems with a Chevy Traverse. GM has failed to fix the problem and I acknowledge that they have a design flaw on that transmission with some parts called a wave plate and the torque converter in addition to inadequate cooling of the transmission fluid. Service rep didn’t make me any promises but she was going to try to see if GM would pay for at least some of the work. In the meantime I’m paying 20 bucks a day for rental and I am in limbo as to what the damage is going to be for properly repairing the problem with this transmission issue on this Chevy Traverse. If anybody knows of any class action lawsuits or attorneys that would be willing to take on GM fix the problem had to pay 4 remedying the customer, please let me know. Edward Travers still at the dealership and our service rep has not got back to me as to let me know whether or not they found a problem with the transmission issue.
I have a 2017 GMC 1500 I bought new with the 8 speed trans., this truck had a $58000.00 window sticker in it when I bought it. I have had it back to the dealer many time about the hard shift from 1st gear to 2nd. They changed the fluid and reprogramed the electronic valve body. It is no deferent than it was before. The service manager says his truck does the same thing. He said GM don’t have any fixes that they know will work. So he said I will have to live with it. When I go from 1st to 2nd gear or from 2nd to 1st just above idle speed it shifts so hard it feels like you just got hit from behind or the rear axle just broke. I would not feel right to trade in and pass the problem on to somebody else, I just want it fixed right. With a low thirty thousand mile it should on it, it should be running like a new one
When am I getting a check?
I have the cure for the transmission…I traded the vehicle, just could not stand it anymore and G.M. is running the clock out,I’ll NEVER be back
GM’s Transmission issues are not limited to just the 8 speed.I went threw 3 brand new GM trucks in 3 years. All 3 trucks had 6 speed Transmissions with similar issues as the 8 speed.Delaminating torque converters main issue. They blow apart sending debris through the Transmission. The debris can never be fully flushed out causing sticky shifts, gears holding to long and rev ups of RPM’s during shifts. The first truck was a 2017 Silverado true north edition.I noticed unusual shifting and really hard downshifts shortly after purchase.Took it to dealer for answers.Dealer was not much help. They tried replacing main computer that floats in oil inside Transmission. The fix did not help issue. After a couple months of constant drivability issues a finally couldn’t take it anymore and traded it in on a 2017 GM Elevation.Guess what,At 3000 kms this truck started acting strange when shifting.I took it into dealership and they took Transmission apart to find machining marks on inside of valve body and pump housing.Dealer ship fixed issue by ording new parts for my BRAND NEW TRUCK then gave it back to me.I immediately noticed that between shifts the RPM’s would flare up and truck would lose momentum.I brought back truck to dealership took it for ride with service manager and he confirmed something was not right with Transmission still.A field tech was called in to to asses the truck. While waiting for tech to come the dealership was advised by the tech to pressure test the lines of the Transmission. They test the pressure of lines but did not drive the truck after the test because results from test were considered normal. When the tech finally showed up the service manager took truck for drive with tech and the truck suddenly shifted normally with no issues. This was a hard pill to swallow so to speak after all the issues I had prior to the pressure test.It was decide that debris must have been caught up somewhere in Transmission and now that it had been dislodged by pressurizing the system that it should be OK from now on.This conclusion was not good enough for me because there was going to be a chance that the debris could be caught up in Transmission again sometime in the future.I started calling GM customer service over and over and over trying to get them to replace the truck. Finally they decided to assist me with the replacement of their defective vehicle.I ended up purchasing a 3rd truck from GM with not much discount for all my past issues. This truck was a 2018 GM Sierra Elevation crew cab short box. This truck also had a 6 speed transmission. Not long after I though my GM Transmission problems were solved the truck started acting up when shifting. The Transmission would stick in second gear and not want to up shift I would bounce up and down on accelerator and enventually get it to shift into 3rd.I would back out of my driveway come to complete stop and put into drive. The truck would just rev up then after a 5 second delay bang into drive. This happened every time after the truck sat more than 20 minutes. So back to the dealership I went!I dropped of my truck and left disgusted.I received a call from dealership the next day.The service manager told me he was going to have to order some new Transmission parts for the truck.I couldn’t believe it.He told me that the Torque converter had come apart and the Transmission had debris in it.The parts arrived the truck was repaired and given back to me.Truck seemed to be performing as should for first couple weeks then the signs of something not right in Transmission returned.I called GM customer service again.I was told they considered the truck repaired. At this point so much damage had been caused to my mental health and my Family unit from all the stress covering over the period of almost 3 years I could not take anymore! The dealership would not give me my money back,GM customer service was done with me and The dealership would only offer me a $20,000 loss on another trade. We ended up changing labels and now are the happy owners of a more reliable vehicle.I was a lifetime loyal GM customer ever since I got my drivers licence.I have always held GM above the rest for their smooth riding and luxious vehicles. Its really sad to see them not care about their reputation anymore and even worse to see them not care about losing a longtime customer.
GM has very serious Transmission problems in their newer vehicles and need to own up to their design flaws and start refunding people’s money.
i think the majority of the 8-10 speeds problems originated with GM’s brilliant idea to use standard red ATF (because they had a surplus of it in stock) even though they knew 8+ speed transmissions need specially developed fluid. the reason for this is because the gearsets are much closer to each other than a say 5-6 speed (same size transmission, more gears = less space between them in the housing). this whole problem is 100% caused by GM’s storied cost cutting measures, which they are world famous for.
Heads up if your truck is still under warranty, GMC is doing a fluid change at NO COST. Getting my 2016 Sierra done Oct 1st.
Says who? Is that nationwide or just at your local dealer?
I did little research discovered it on my own web search then called my dealer, I don’t believe any recalls. If your truck is under warranty I suggest confronting dealer GM is recommending different oil.
Why taking so long to post my link comment its GM
My apologies, your dealer should explain your warranty. I messed up mine is 6 and NO issues.
But there is a fix or improvement for 8 TSB oil change…
2019 GM Equinox Ongoing Safety Problems Being Ignored
Oct 29th 2020
Here are some purely negligent class action worthy safety problems that are not being addressed by GM for the 2019 Equinox I own that I have reported over a year ago with absolutely no answer whatsoever from GM.
1. Dangerous projector headlights that are aimed high this is blinding people coming towards me yet since they are aimed high I cannot properly see the road or whatever is in front of me and to both sides. This is for both low and high beams. The GM dealer says that these headlights cannot be adjusted at all. This ongoing problems Has been reported online a zillion times already. I have come close to a head on collision with a truck coming at me while flashing his high beams into my eyes. This issue was never put into my original case report that I made about this ongoing problem over a year ago!
2. The Bluetooth system disconnects to the cell phone all the time so phone calls cannot be made or received through the sound system as it should be all of the time. This is another HUGE dangerous safety problem because it forces drivers to dig around and manually pick up their phones while breaking the law to answer or dial and talk to people on while driving. The dealer says it can’t be fixed and the service manager has the same exact problem with his Equinox
3. This is a Horrible safety issue If you have pets, babies or children in the vehicle and you walk away from it with your key fob for only a few minutes the engine and air conditioning automatically shuts off which will allow the vehicle to quickly heat up and KILL any pet or person inside!
I have been trying to have GM listen to these issues and act on them for over a year now with absolutely no response back to me at all!
Just purchased a 2017 CT6 with 20,580 on it…three days after closing, it starts the shuddering thing. THEN i find the blogs et al about it. Hoping the dealer will perform the TSB 18-NA-355 and have it solved. If not, I’ll go to a more local dealership, pay for it…and never consider buying from the Dealership that sold it with only “as-is”.
Yes, shame on me for not getting more information, more answers before the purchase.
My only grace is that I didn’t buy it NEW with this issue and hassles that i’ve read about.
how do i join the class action?
Sorry but the courts have dropped that class action law suit about a year ago.
Glad I stumbled on this blog. I am a first time owner of a 2017 GMC Sierra All Terrain. From the beginning, the truck shifted hard from 1st to 2nd gear. When I told the dealer this, they said it’s just the way the 8 speed transmissions shift. Now that I know this is an issue and not the norm, I will be contacting the dealer tomorrow. Funny that these service bulletins are not forwarded to owners as a courtesy. My buddy who has a GMC truck was the one who let me know about this issue. I hope the GMC dealer/GM stands behind this fix.
I have a 2022 Colorado Z 71 doing the same thing and being told by my dealership and GM that is normal, would love to get involved into the class action lawsuit
I have a 2017 Sierra. Replaced 1 transmission at 68,000, 2nd one 25,000 miles later. Now have 150,000 miles and it needs a 3rd
Ull find the best and only way to fix the 8L45 and 8L90 8 speed automatic transmission is to trade to another manufacturer ..That’s what I had to do .General Motors will not honor their warranty commitments period. I fought for over 3 years with G.M. /Cadillac customer Care / and G.M dealership and after 3 years of grief, stress and huge expense to myself i had to trade the vehicle (2017 Cadillac ATS Premium luxury AWD 3.6 L )
I have the same 2017 Sierra and my transmission always slams into 2nd gear when it is first started till it warms up. The dealer said that it’s just normal for the 8 speed transmission to do that. Not!!! GMC has since stopped making the 8 speed and went to the 10 speed leaving us stuck with junk. Not go PR for a company I’d say.
Any there buddy of mine has a 2018 GMC and he said there is a service bulletin (18-NA-355) that changes out the fluid in the transmission to a different viscosity and he said it helped. Still not something you expect from a $55k truck.
I had to sue gm it took 2 years but I got cashed out with 115k and paid my lemon law lawyer paid off my loan and walked away with 35k thanks gm
I am having same problem. If GM does not fix this issue I will sue and return vehicle. Oh, and list the dealership that I bought it from.
My 17 Yukon only has 64,000 miles on it. Had the 20 quart flush at 30,000, and brought it back twice after and they did nothing those times…said it was normal.
I have the best GM extended warranty and I was told it that it does need the flush again with a new viscosity. In the next breath I was told that GM says it’s normal maintenance at $700!
The manual says normal at 72,000…..
They know it’s a known issue on my truck….I’m pissed!
Sorry but the courts have dropped that class action law suit about a year ago.
Apparently it is back on now. Aug 2024. https://gmauthority.com/blog/2024/08/gm-ordered-to-face-class-action-lawsuit-over-faulty-8-speed-transmissions/
With all this being said how do u get GM to replace my torque converter so I don’t have to feather the pedal,so I don’t feel like I’m getting rear ended on my 2016 Chevy Silverado LTZ with 8 speed trans.
2019 CT6 clunks and chugs at low speeds while turning… While on drive with Tech he says “Woah, thats not normal” then they keep my car for 3 hours, go to pick it up and the Service Manager hands be a bulletin saying “GM says this is normal for AWD”
I have 4 years left on my Powertrain warranty no way this car lasts until than..
I have a 2013 Silverado with a 5.3 in it and it has the same problem vibrate shaking RPM needle going up and down rough idling while driving especially going uphill or a slight grade up here.
I have a 2022 Colorado Z71 with 5000 miles on it and a 8 speed transmission and in the cold weather it shifts and downshifts really hard and feels like it is going to fall out of the truck and General Motors won’t do anything about it other than giving me a 3 page service bulletin telling me it’s normal to operate like that. I’m a frustrated GM owner and would love to start a class action lawsuit against GM for selling a crappy product
Good Luck, the courts have already dropped a class action lawsuit against GM for the 8 speed transmissions. I don’t think that it can be brought up again.. I got rid of a 2017 for that problem.

I will never buy another Chevrolet again because they don’t stand behind their products and could care less about the customer.
