Competitive Sales Comparison
Chevrolet Malibu sales performance in the third quarter enabled the midsize sedan to maintain its position as the fifth best-selling model in its competitive set. Meanwhile, the Toyota Camry dominated the segment in first place, with nearly 50,000 units more than the Malibu, and about 7,000 units more than the runner-up – the Honda Accord. The Accord was followed by the Nissan Altima in third and the discontinued Ford Fusion in fourth.
The Malibu outsold the rest of the segment, including the Kia Optima in sixth place, Hyundai Sonata in seventh, Subaru Legacy in eighth, Mazda6 in ninth (see Mazda6 sales) and Volkswagen Passat in tenth (see VW Passat sales).

The Malibu saw its segment share improve from 9 to 10 percent, while trailing way behind the 24-percent share of the Toyota Camry, 22 percent of the Honda Accord, and 15 percent of the Nissan Altima. However, the Malibu was also one of only two models to see sales volume increase during the quarter. The only other model to also post an uptick in sales was the Nissan Altima, which saw sales skyrocket 20 percent.
The midsize mainstream sedan segment contracted an average of 6 percent to 339,575 units in Q3 2019. As such, the 5-percent increase in Chevrolet Malibu sales during the quarter outperformed the segment average.
The GM Authority Take
Chevrolet Malibu sales posted a very healthy performance during the third quarter. We believe the growth experienced during Q3 was the result of lucrative incentive offers and increased fleet/commercial sales. The Malibu is currently the only Chevrolet sedan to not be discontinued or be planned to be discontinued. Meanwhile, other Chevy sedans like the Cruze and Volt have already been axed, while the Impala is expected to be discontinued in the very near future. Meanwhile, the latest industry rumblings say that the Chevy Sonic will also be dropped, though Chevrolet has denied those claims.
It will be interesting to see how Chevrolet Malibu sales fare during the final quarter of 2019, while Japanese competition – namely the Accord and Camry – continues to dominate the segment on the one hand, and buyers continue gravitating toward crossover SUVs at the expense of sedans on the other.

The Chevrolet Malibu is a mid-size sedan sold in most markets where Chevrolet has a business presence. It is currently Chevrolet's second-largest sedan, in the U.S. and Canada, slotting above the subcompact Chevrolet Sonic and compact Chevrolet Cruze but under the full-size Chevrolet Impala. The current, ninth-generation model was introduced in 2016. It rides on the GM E2 platform shared with the Buick Regal, Opel/Vauxhall Insignia, Holden Commodore NG, and the Cadillac XT4. For 2019 - the fourth model year of the ninth-gen model - the Malibu received a midcycle enhancement, otherwise known as a facelift or refresh, that consists of revised exterior styling, a new Malibu RS trim level, a CVT transmission for L, LS, LT and RS models, a new infotainment system, a new 8-inch reconfigurable driver information center (DIC), LED headlamps on the Premier model, and various other new features. The Chevrolet Malibu is produced at the following GM plants:About Chevrolet Malibu

Comments
It’s gaining while the rest of the segment is contracting – and there’s more to gain as the Ford Fusion inventory evaporates.
The latest styling update helped. The Malibu is a decent car – I can recommend it now that it has a defeat switch for the auto start/stop system and a nicer looking nose.
Good for Chevrolet!
I really wish they’d get on the next generation Malibu and Regal soon. They should both be made at Fairfax and feature optional AWD and wagon variants.
I would like to know wtf the lisence plate says ?
Alex, Might want to check the first sentence. Chevrolet Malibu sales decreased in… I thought they increased in the US???
Increased indeed. Fixed.
The Malibu simply needs better marketing and a new trim setup. Having to go for the Premier just to avoid Halogens is ridiculous in 2019. Work to increase awareness of the product and get lease prices lower, and there is a recipe for success.
Especially with the Fusion being phased out, the Malibu has room to grow.
Will there be a next generation Malibu? GM has a bad habit of leaving customer in limbo about the future or their products. In some case they don’t even know if their vehicle of choice even have a future.
The Fusion is discontinued? It’s showing up as a 2020 model choice and their are loads of them at Ford dealers. Their was also an announcement that it could hang on until 2021 in current form on the ford Authority site. When it does go this should move the Malibu up another notch to 4th place. but i’m sure as usual GM will let it rot on the vine and then declare nobody is buying it and then discontinue another long time nameplate.
They also need to revise the trims and engine choices. The low power 1.5T is barely okay on the cheap L and LS/LT. The RS needs to have the 2.0T at least as an option and the LT trim level needs to ditch the urethane steering wheel and shifter and at the very least safety package 1 should be included in the rather high 27,495 base price of this trim level. The RS trim should be the sweet spot of this lineup. rear seat vents, advanced safety equipment and the 2.0T should at least be available. They also need to beef up marketing this car now that the Fusion is apparently on the way out and improve quality.
I have a 2018 Malibu Premier. This generations model made a huge leap over the previous model, great features and tech. However Chevy need to improve its interior build quality in order to compete with the big dogs Toyota and Honda. Hopefully those improvements are made if there’s a next gen Malibu.
I just bought a 2019 Malibu LT at the end of October; great incentives on offer – 0% for 72 months! Only have a 1,000 miles on it, but it seems very well put together. I don’t quite understand complaints with “interior build quality” – nothing wrong with it; the materials are fine as-is and the assembly appears flawless. I thought the stop-start thing would bug me, but no issues with it really. Also, for the naysayers complaining about GM’s tiny little 1.5L matched with a CVT, the car accelerates just fine. Amazing how much power that little motor churns out.
I’d would like to see a larger base engine or the 2.5 offered between the 1.6t and 2.0t but not long ago you had to have a 3.1 v6 to get the same 160 hp the base Malibu gets today with nowhere near the fuel economy nor (IMO) reliability.
For interior and overall design I also agree, back in ’16 the Malibu made Toyanda go back to the drawing board which why your see an more aggressive Camcord today.
When you compare the Malibu’s build quality to the Camry it’s night and day. I test drove a Camry and it blows my Malibu away. To be fair in 2016 the Malibu was the better car.
