Runaway Cable Spool Threatens Cadillac Escalade, Stopped By Chevy Malibu: Video

A bizarre incident was captured on video and recently posted to social media showing a large cable spool rolling down a busy street. The incident occurred in Chicago, Illinois, and threatened several nearby vehicles, including a Cadillac Escalade. Luckily, the massive cable spool eventually came to a rest against a parked Chevy Malibu without any massive collisions.

The video, just 40 seconds long, was filmed from the cab of a GMC Sierra HD on Chicago’s Western Avenue. It starts with the massive spool rolling alongside traffic and moving at a surprisingly steady pace. The spool passes in front of a Cadillac Escalade, SUV whose driver wisely opts to slow down in order to avoid a collision.

As the spool continues to roll forward, it starts to drift towards oncoming traffic, causing several drivers to swerve out of its path. The person recording the video can be heard shouting in disbelief as the spool continues on its course, obviously amazed at what they’re witnessing.

Eventually, the spool rolls into a curb before it collides with a parked Chevy Malibu on the opposite side of the street. The collision looks to be relatively minor, but given just how heavy the spool could be, the front end of the Malibu may have sustained some damage, although the extent of the damage is unclear. Either way, it’s hard to imagine the incident wasn’t at least mildly disruptive for the car’s owner.

Several social media users reacted to the odd video with humorous comments.

“City bout to come give it a ticket for being parked illegally,” one commenter quips.

“When’s my high-speed internet available?” jokes another.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported. If the spool was traveling more quickly or it collided head-on with some of the traffic, things definitely could have ended differently.
