Competitive Sales Comparison
The 2.47 percent increase in Camaro sales during the first quarter wasn’t enough to move it out of third place in its segment, behind the Dodge Challenger and Ford Mustang.
By comparison, Ford Mustang sales decreased 12 percent to 16,917 units, placing it in first place in its class by sales volume, while Dodge Challenger sales fell off 24 percent to 13,431 units, placing it in second place in terms of overall sales volume during the quarter.

It’s worth recognizing that the Camaro was the only model in the entire segment to post a sales volume uptick.
The mainstream, two-door sports car segment contracted 14 percent in Q1 2019.
The GM Authority Take
Like in months and quarters past, higher prices of the sixth-generation Camaro continues to push price-conscious buyers to more affordable offerings from Ford and Dodge. The 2019 Camaro refresh aimed to address this via a revised trim level structure with a broader price spectrum. Notably, the refreshed Camaro is as much as $2,000 less expensive than the 2018 model, specifically when it comes to mid-level LT models.
It’s unclear whether or not the market is reacting positively to the updated trim level structure, since first quarter 2019 Camaro sales results include sales of 2018 model year vehicles in dealer stock. Chevy ran a 15 percent discount in March to clear remaining inventory of 2018 Camaros. By association, it’s unclear whether the uptick in sales is the result of increased interest in the updated 2019 model, or the sell-out of the prior model year.
Some believe that various product-related issues are holding back Camaro sales, including reduced cabin visibility, a dashboard design that might not be attractive to some, as well as little differentiation from the fifth-gen Camaro in terms of first-glance exterior styling. Chevrolet attempted to address the “little differentiation” argument with revised front and rear fascias on the 2019 model.
About The Numbers
- All percent change figures compared to Camaro Q1 2018 sales, except as noted
- There were 76 selling days in Q1 2019 and 76 selling days in Q1 2018
- South Korea sales figures reflect actual vehicle registrations rather than wholesales
The Chevrolet Camaro is a family of sports cars that includes a two-door coupe and two-door soft-top convertible as well as various performance variants such as SS, 1LE, ZL1 and ZL1 1LE. The legendary nameplate was first introduced in 1966 and went out of production in 2002, when the model was in its fourth generation. The Camaro was re-introduced in 2009 as an all-new fifth-generation model based on the GM Zeta platform. The Camaro is currently Chevrolet's most affordable sports car, slotting below the Chevrolet Corvette. The current model was introduced for the 2016 model year and represents the sixth generation of the Camaro nameplate. The model rides on the GM Alpha platform shared with the Cadillac ATS and Cadillac CTS, though the majority of the architecture underpinning the Camaro are unique to it. The 2018 Chevy Camaro represents the third model year of the sixth-gen Camaro that deleted the Camaro 50th Anniversary Edition and the Krypton Green exterior color, while adding the ZL1 1LE Extreme Track Performance Package. There's also an expanded availability of the SS 1LE Track Performance Package, which is now available on the 2SS Coupe, as well as the addition of a washer fluid level sensor. A midcycle refresh arrives for the 2019 model year that introduces new, model-specific front and rear styling, a new trim level structure for LT models that adds a new 3LT trim, and a new 1LE track performance package for the 2.0L Turbo LTG engine. The 2019 Camaro also brings the new GM 10-speed automatic transmission for SS models, the Rear Camera Mirror, third-generation infotainment systems, and various other enhancements. The gen six Chevy Camaro is assembled for all markets by GM USA at the GM Lansing Grand River plant in Lansing, Michigan, USA.About Chevrolet Camaro

Maybe people are (slowly) realizing that you can’t see the front end from behind the wheel.
You generally can’t see the front of the vehicle from the drivers seat of a low-slung sports car.
I bought one and i see out of it just fine, learn to use your mirrors or stay at home
I think the sales are up slightly because i’m sure they discounted the 2018 but people might actually like the refresh. A good friend of mine who likes sports cars, but it doesn’t fit his need right now likes the updated front end a lot. I also saw no one upset at about it the local car show I was at. I’m actually liking it better too. However I have vehicle I need for my toys so until that is paid off I can’t afford a new camaro.
Only ones hating are Mustang slappy’s and pre-2019 6th gen owners. Glad to see this increase for many reasons as a Camaro fan, especially to laugh at the “know-it-all” haters.
One of the biggest shortcomings cited on the 6th gen Camaro design was that it wasn’t differentiated enough from the 5th generation.
Love the refresh or hate the refresh, one of the things it does pretty well is differentiate the 6th gen car from the 5th gen car.
I love it too, but your explanation, with respect, doesn’t necessarily hold true since the Challenger hasn’t changed very much since 2008, and up til now have been increasing. Chevy reeeally needs to get in line with some serious marketing. The crazy thing is that they actually make awesome commercials for the Camaro, but won’t show them here.. for example:
https://youtu.be/RKsQ7rfuYJQ
And how about more customization? Chevy has been dropping the ball on of the greatest performance iterations in automotive history, but won’t market it to save their lives. Show how BAD A$$ it can be for Godsake.
I think the mustang facelift is far more uglier compared to Camaro. I’m surprised with the challenger sales though, that’s one ancient car that doesn’t handle well nor that good looks, but sells better then a Camaro. Probably due to the hype of the hellcat/demon/redeye and/or cheaper.
They both received ugly facelifts. The 6th gen Camaro didn’t need a facelift to help sales. It needed an SS package that offered a premium interior at a lower price. $50k MSRP for a fairly plain Camaro SS is too high. Now it’s too expensive and ugly.
Wow the challenger is ugly???????? You are 1 dumb guy!!!
its not ugly but to each there own , we drive either cars we can afford or cars we think are sweet to look at just , depends on who is looking right. personally i love the way the Camaro looks over the other two but none of them are ugly just different , one is much bigger then the Camaro the other is closer to the same size give or take. beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
I’m concerned that the next ax to fall at Chevrolet will be on the Camaro. And that’d be sad. People keep gravitating to the style-less, pod-like crossover. I think Malibu, and the remaining cars in the Chevy lineup are doomed, with the current mindset in the world of the Detroit Three.
With the Corvette going to a mid-engine setup that’s almost certainly going to be more expensive across the board, that creates room for the Camaro to grow into. It has the handling and performance. Now it just needs to evolve into a design that doesn’t lean so heavily on the 5th gen’s retro styling.
I think Chevy should aim the Camaro more at the 4-series. It’s got the all the performance chops to do circles around the BMW. It needs to be a functional 2+2 (like the 4-series) and if the ‘vette is going upmarket than the Camaro should get a nicer interior.
The 4 Series rival should come from Cadillac, not from Chevrolet.
A rwd compact sedan should be offered at Chevy (or an resurrected Pontiac). With Cruze gone, turbo 4s to a 5.3 Alpha “Nova” wouldn’t step on Caddy’s toes as the Caddy would use Caddy engines/options (ttv6, AWD, Super Cruise..), also this would shake the compact competition, scale cost of Alpha and offer something exciting and affordable to American car buyers.
The 2019 Chevrolet Camaro has the lowest base price of the three cars which means it’s something else other than price, one has to suspect it’s the intangibles; what will be interesting is how sales of the Camaro will be when Chevy’s new Blazer becomes available.
If Chevrolet would actually consider giving the car some driver’s visibility, more people might buy it. The silly thing handles well; but the view from behind the steering wheel is like the inside of an Army Tank without the situation screens:)
It’s the friggin price , people………be comparable with Dodge and Ford…….it shows in this current sales charts!!!!! Damn, what is so hard to understand!!!!!!!
They’ll have to react to their faltering truck sales, too. They’re trying to get away with offering less while charging the same or more than competitors comparable units. With the premium they’re all charging brand loyalty starts to fade.
Yes, #1 forever!!. Just like 08′ GM went BK, but hey they sold plenty of trucks… .
If having more sales is more important than ATPs don’t know what to tell folks…
The problem with their trucks is that they raised prices despite claiming they lowered prices. An LT Trailboss is not worth $52k. The Trailboss suspension is available as a separate package that can be installed by the dealer. It costs $1800 installed. Where’s the extra $10k in value?
The other issue is that they claimed they finally heard our complaints over the lack of options and configurability with their trucks. They claimed that the 2019’s would have more options than ever before so we could get the exact truck we wanted. What did we get? FEWER options than ever before. The 6.2 is still limited to the LTZ and HC. The 10 speed is limited to the LTZ and HC. They took away the 3.73 axle ratio. 3.42’s are only available in a max tow package. If you pick the max tow package you don’t get a 2-speed transfer case. If you pick a Z71 you only get the 3.23 axle ratio to choose from. If you want an LT Trailboss you only get a 3.23 axle ratio. The Custom Trailboss is filled with blank spaces where features aren’t available. There’s a huge blank spot on the steering wheel. The 60/40 bench seat has a fold down center like usual, but you can’t get one with a center storage area. Most of the 2019’s don’t come with rear wheel well liners, something that was practically standard on an LT or higher in past years.
Other annoyances include the fact that the T1xx platform shares a lot of similarities with the Colorado and Canyon. One of those similarities unfortunately, isn’t a painted frame. Nope. The same old terrible frame wax is all these more expensive than ever Silverados are getting. I like the 2019 Silverado. Now that I’ve seen them in person, they’re a very nice truck. I’m just not impressed with the total lack of configurability, blatant cost cutting, and higher prices of these trucks. Ford offers 3.73’s in many packages. Ram offers 3.92’s in many of their packages. GM’s best are 3.42’s and only if you’re willing to accept a 1-speed transfer case instead of a 2-speed TC. Ridiculous.
I actually love the 2019 front end on everything but the SS front end, which is still goofy to me. Now can anyone say what happened to the “concept front end”? That would be a great option!
I would buy a new one today if the 2SS 1LE package was available in an automatic. However someone at GM is religious about the car not having an automatic option. Only other refresh not thrilled about is tail lights. (2018 was better) Other problem with looking for Camaro I want a 2SS with sunroof and they are scarce. I live in Tampa and need to travel 150mi min to find one.
