The GM Authority Take

The XT5’s January sales performance cements its second place spot in its competitive set, behind the Lexus RX by nearly 3,000 units. The XT5 did, however, outsell the Acura MDX and Lincoln MKX (see Lincoln MKX sales), which will be relaunched as the Lincoln Nautilus for the 2019 model year, with a few additional changes.

We posit that the XT5’s sales volume remains healthy due to a competitive product offering as well as the ongoing shift in consumer buying dynamics that favors crossover utility vehicles at the expense of other vehicle types like sedans and hatchbacks. However, it was handily outsold by the RX, which also posted a significantly higher increase in year-over-year sales volume than the XT5, something we attribute to the market’s following and reputation of the RX nameplate as well as the strength of Lexus as a desired luxury brand.

About Cadillac XT5

2017 Cadillac XT5 Platinum Exterior Review 020

The Cadillac XT5 is a midsize crossover that replaced the Cadillac SRX. Currently the only crossover in the Cadillac lineup, the vehicle will soon be flanked by a smaller Cadillac XT4 and a larger crossover believed to be the Cadillac XT6.

Currently in its first generation, the XT5 was introduced for the 2017 model year. The vehicle is based on the regular-length wheelbase variant of the GM C1 platform shared with the second-generation GMC Acadia and upcoming, future Chevrolet Blazer. A longer-wheelbase variant of the same platform underpins the second-gen Chevrolet Traverse and Buick Enclave.

For the 2018 model year, the XT5 gets several new exterior colors, a new “base” trim level that offers all-wheel-drive, the Rear Seat Reminder technology, and various new accessories.

For North American markets, the Cadillac XT5 is built exclusively at the GM Spring Hill factory in Tennessee operated by GM USA. For the Chinese market, the vehicle is built at the Cadillac China Jinqiao factory operated by GM China.

  1. Cadillac’s XT5 sales could be better if there were different models as the 2.7L Opposed Piston engine with 270 horsepower and 450 lbs-ft of torque would be an ideal base engine and the LGW 400 hp twin-turbo 3.0L DOHC-4v V6 as a Vsport model makes total sense because with the exception of trim, there’s not much different between a base XT5 and the top tier XT5.

    1. Especially if that’s all you have to work with for the moment. Enhance what you have.

  2. Alex – I posted it way down on the CT6 link, but Benz just awarded their global MB account to Publicis – the same groupe that handles Cadillac.

I suspect they installed some ‘brand firewalls’ with the assurance that Cadillac will be a separate, top priority.

But since there are models in direct competition with each other, esp in the US and China, wonder how that’s gonna play out … Cadillac’s marketing being what it is …

    1. MB spends $950m – and you have CT6 going against the S-class, XT5 vs GLE (?), etc.

Not sure how Publicis smooth-talks their way out of conflicts, or why a billion-dollar account coming off two records years isn’t a distraction from promising but far less funded Cadillac.

      1. This is nothing unusual. These firms have different teams/divisions/offices handling the accounts.

        1. Yeah, I’ve seen it before … like having Porsche and a Japanese car company under one corporate roof.

I just can’t recall seeing two relatively close competitors under the same banner. Oh well – it’ll work itself out.
Wouldn’t be surprised if Cadillac goes shopping, though.

  3. The XT5 is a good SUV and it’s helping keep the lights on in New York . But Cadillac can’t sit still and sell this model with basically no changes like they did withe SRX that sold for six and a half years with a grill change and CUE showing up in 2013 . Also color changes aren’t enough either , I believe GM really needs to make a sport model of the XT5 .
They have four trim levels but the Base model is hardly a top seller , and for Platinum models a different engine should be standard . There is alot of room in that engine bay for a TTV-6 with adjustments to the suspension .
There is nothing wrong with being in second place but to hold that position with all of the new offerings coming out they may have to fight to hold it .
Also I am a big fan of Head-Up Displays and that should be offered in all models minus the Base ,

  4. As soon as Cadillac gets they’re reputation back on track they’re sales will follow . Colors need to be studied they are blah and why must you pay for a blah color other than silver which is blah. Options also need to be rearranged ,i don’t want to mention the rav4 but there are standard items on there base model and are optional on xt5 base model , Cadillac was always styled with stylish chrome wheels , these painted dull looking wheels are not becoming to Cadillacs style . I realize different levels are to include different equipment but wheels should be an option on all levels. Cornering lamps – if they are positioned properly should be standard on all levels , they allow better vision on turns .

  5. I understand that the RWD models have a higher starting price, but all of these models are often still cross-shopped, and the fact that the XT5 is in second place, is really great. Yes, people probably rarely cross-shop and top-of-the-line X5 with the base model MKX, but still, many people (including my parents) cross-shop these FWD and RWD vehicles. Also, from what a MB salesman told me, he sees a surprising amount of cross-shopping between the GLE (SUV not coupe), X5 and RX.

    1. They XT5 and RX are most often cross-shopped. The GLE and X5 are also, but those customers usually don’t cross shop the other two as often.

  6. I liked SRX less boxy profile better.

  7. I’m expecting modest changes for the XT5 for ’19 model year which we could see nine speed transmission, mild hybrid imported from China and etc. so the XT4 won’t show it up much. Nothing is definite as of yet but I would expect Cadillac to give the XT5 equipment freshening due to another CUV coming under it.
