By The Numbers: General Motors January 2013 Sales Up 16 Percent In U.S.

General Motors sold 194,699 vehicles in the United States in January 2013. The first month of 2013 marks a great start to the new year for the automaker in the U.S., with sales up 16 percent compared to January 2012.

Retail sales were up 16 percent, while fleet sales were down 2 percent — confirming statements by GM executives that consumers have a true desire for GM’s vehicles.

Each of The General’s four brands recorded double-digit year-over-year increases in sales, including:

  • Chevrolet – up 10.9 percent
  • Buick – up 31.9 percent
  • Cadillac – up 47 percent
  • GMC – up 23.4 percent

“The year is off to a very good start for General Motors,” said Kurt McNeil, vice president of U.S. sales operations. “There’s a sense of optimism among our dealers that only comes when you pair a growing economy with great new products. We started to see the benefits in 2012 with vehicles like the Chevrolet Sonic, Cadillac ATS and Buick Verano. Now in 2013, we’re entering the sweet spot of our product plan in a growing economy.”

In addition, General Motors is embarking on one of the largest product offensives in the company’s history in 2013. Chevy, for instance, is expected to unveil or launch over 15 models globally, including the Spark EV, Cruze diesel, and all-new Impala, SS, Silverado, Corvette in the U.S. Buick will launch the Encore, along with refreshed Regal and LaCrosse, while GMC will launch the all-new Sierra; Cadillac will launch the all-new CTS.

  1. Nice start but Watch GMs incentive dollar numbers rise for January. Gm card plus-ups, trade and loyalty bonus cash, targeted in-market bonus cash, gm purchase program extended to aunts/uncles/nieces/nephews, much of it stackable and all in addition to the rebates and 0%.

    1. Did anyone notice how the truck stock has plunged? There were so many worries a month ago. Now it looks like GM may not have enough truck inventory to meet demand when they shut the plants down for changeover.

  2. trucks probably went down cause we take FOREVER for refreshments and everyone else is getting the competitors cause they are on the ball while we starve ourselfs like the silverado same SINCE 2007! and the camaro…. its just too long of a interval -_-

    1. ???

      Perhaps you misunderstood.

Inventory of GM trucks plummeted as sales went up.

  3. Wow, Verano is kicking hiney, but Regal (and LaCrosse) are struggling. Good to see that Terrain is doing well as is the Equinox, Sonic, Sierra and Silverado. Hope the new 2014 model trucks are a big hit. They actually look much nicer in person — more sophisticated and refined– than in photos. Also, for what it’s worth, we went to the Detroit Auto Show last week, and the new Corvette Stingray, which is asbolutely delicious looking, was arguably the most popular display at the event. Big crowds milled around it.

  4. Don’t waste your time 62Vette, just someone finding an excuse to bash GM before comprehending what they read.

  5. As a never waivering GM fan I am thrilled with the direction of the company! All of the critics will soon be silenced as to a stale lineup. All that plus the new Corvette is truly good enough to eat!!!

  6. Enclave up almost 60%. Every month it seems like it sells more and more. At this rate it will outsell the Chevy Traverse. (very doubtful)

It is a great vehicle and what I drive.

  7. Just saw on MSNBC that truck inventory is up, to over 90 days. Someones numbers are off. All those Captivas are all to fleet sales? I thought GM was going away from that because it lowered resale values? Getting a lot of mixed messages!

  8. Truck inventory was 160 days in November. Inventory been paired down preparing for model change.

Captiva fleet to keep value on Equinox/Terrain. Overall fleet down 2%.

    Seems straight to me.

    1. I do not have the numbers in front of me but at the last Auto News report out I believe the full size inventory dropped to below 100. That was about a month ago.

I believe that it is now probably below 90 now which is per plan because they will be shutting plants down for the changeover. Report out should be next week on end of December inventory.

Hopefully they did not cut it so low that there is no inventory left before the new truck comes out. It is a tough balancing act. You do not want to lose sales due to no stock, yet you do not want excess old inventory to cut into the launch of the new truck.

  10. Not to be a downer, but…

As the competition outpaces GM with larger sales volume increases, it means that GM is losing market share.

Need to celebrate good news when it comes around, but GM has large-scale challenges facing it on all fronts.

    1. The “competition” that is outpacing GM globally is Toyota – also the recall king of the world. I’ll take GM quality and style anyday over the bland/predicitable Toyota!
