2012 Chevrolet Cruze Eco Badging

With the Chevrolet Cruze Diesel hitting the market in Q2 of this year (April-June), most of us have been wondering where it has been. News has been quiet surrounding it, and the car still has yet to make an auto show debut. This will all change in the coming few weeks, as we have just received word that the 2014 model-year Chevrolet Cruze will make its debut at the 2013 Chicago Auto Show, on February 8.

Here is everything we’ve heard about the Chevrolet Cruze Eco-D, which includes a rumored range of 700 miles per tank.

I’m waiting to see how it sells.

Diesel is 20% higher than gas today.

Just to break even on fuel cost it needs to get over 50 mpg Highway vs the current Cruze ECO manual 42mpg. Or for the auto Eco (39mpg gas) 47 mpg.

And a non ECO gets 36 highway so at least 43 mpg diesel.

As a comparison Golf/Jetta TDI gets 42 highway.

Plus it will probably be a $500-$1000 option.

If so penetration will be under 10%.

Diesel is the exact same price as 89-midgrade right now in my area ($1.24/L so $4.70/US gallon), so ~7% price premium over regular. That’s not too bad. Plus all that torque is a bonus!

Agree with Andrew. The reason you buy a diesel is to get that torque at about the same fuel cost per mile. It’s the reason I’m seriously considering the Ford C-Max. Some battery help when you need it for acceleration makes a lot of sense, as does getting the same from a fuel like diesel. I also like the thought of running a diesel for several hundred thousand miles, a concern if choosing a new hybrid. For a diesel car I would be looking for something that would hold up as long as the engine. Will it be the Cruze? Lot’s of effort going into improving quality, but a hatch or wagon would be better for hauling. Give us that Cruze Wagon with rails and diesel and VeranoHatch would be heading for the Chevy Dealership. But do I have to wait for Chicago to find out GM’s body style intentions? At some point the wait needs to end.

US average has diesel 20% higher than gas. Sounds like you are in Canada and I am sure they have different taxes and everything else.

Ya Canada, we get taxed hard on gas (not as bad as Europe/UK, but much worse that the US considering we are your #1 supplier of oil). Diesel isn’t much more here and at one time not too long ago was cheaper than regular gas.

You guys have cheap gas and ‘beer’, sometimes things just aren’t fair.

Generally in Canada diesel is less costly than unleaded. It should be — less refining is necessary to my understanding. And at one point, the fuel was very dirty. I don’t think it’s gas taxes either that makes it more expensive in the US. Can someone explain?

Heard it is the way refineries are set up for gas, not diesel but we sure use a lot of semi diesel.

Diesel Fuel is more expensive because the majority of users are are 18 wheelers or businesses. They can write-off their fuel expenses while we vehicle users get screwed! I wonder how easy it will be to change (R & R) the glow plugs. Glow plugs should be replaced every 30K to 50K miles. Ask any Mercedes Diesel Mechnic.

$500-$1000 option?? The Jetta TDI is a $2700 premium over the comparable SE model. My guess is the Cruze Eco-D will be about $2500 more than a comparable equipped Cruze LT, or somewhere around $23,000, the same ballpark as the Jetta TDI.

In any case diesel in the USA is an enthusiast choice. A 10% take rate would be big.

I’m glad GM is bringing this over, they usually wait for all other competitors to test the waters, letting everyone else gain a firm hold of the market, then they cautiously join in. Yes, I do know this isn’t the first diesel car here but it definitely isn’t last.

this news is like an ice cream sunday without the whip cream. If they were putting this in a cruze wagon or better yet the equinox, I’d be excited but putting this in a economy car that already gets good mileage doesn’t make a lot of sense. I hate to say it but Like veranohatch, I’m also looking at the cmax.

Yaba you are either being sarcastic or have been annoyed to the point of losing your attention to detail. Be relieved. My search should narrow tomorrow at our auto show (likely to eliminate GM), then end within weeks.

I have a huge aversion to buying anything that sources most of its parts from Germany. Its just expensive welfare for southern Europe. Triple price? Lesson learned.

Even if the MINI wasn’t made in Germany they ruined it anyway. The rack system now uses those ugly and damaging clips. Unfortunate. MINI had the nicest tie-down system via their towing eye-bolts that screw into the bumpers. One could haul an 18 foot sea kayak on a fun road car with the security of an SUV. Much easier boat lift too.

I was once excited about an a-la-carte Z-spec Sonic — a MINI buster made in America — but GM butchered the idea by giving the RS too much packaging and little flexibility. In many respects GM is the same as it has always been.

GM should go the whole route and make a diesel wagon in the Cruze and Verano and compete with VW and other Euro vehicles. I predict the diesel sales will be poor. Talk about a niche vehicle. Put small diesel in small trucks.

Yep try a 2k option but Im waiting to see what it looks like and the specs. I found the cruz on edmunds some months ago as a diesle with a price of 22.3k or so. It has since been removed. Wonder what that was about. I hope they offer both engines of 1.7 and 2.0 so people can choose between best mileage with some torque and lower mileage with more torque. Hope it shows in the NYC auto show too coming up in the spring.

@Yaba. I do have a MINI, which should be gone within a few weeks. My experience and what I’ve learned of other German makes has driven my opinions.

So now I am back from today’s auto show. Here is a synopsis:

There was little buzz in the GM area. The new Vette generated interest, photos, etc., but it wasn’t anywhere near the other GM brands — floor areas that were actually relatively dead. The Encore was on a stage and not accessible. I could see restricting access for a concept vehicle but this is “on its way to dealers.” It’s this sort of rigid decision-making that I think really hurts GM.

I’ve been looking for a car with good fuel economy (for vacations and commuting) and carrying utility (for home projects and weekend paddling). I don’t consider this description “niche.”

My choice was confirmed by the show. Incredibly, it was even confirmed by reps of competing companies, who either recommended my “car of choice” or were actual owners of said car. One rep even pointed out the 2nd place finish (an October 2012 report) of said manufacturer in reliability, behind only Toyota.

You know I want a fixed, sturdy roof rack. This make demonstrated their racks on several small cars and SUVs, including demo bikes, surf boards, etc. And no, I’m not talking about Subaru, though I might be if they would just sell us the same powertrains that they offer the Europeans.

I noticed that most of the reps for my choice, and there were a lot of them (mostly local dealers), were all wearing sky-blue shirts. They were clearly enthusiastic about the new engineering technology that they have to sell. I did not see anything like this in the GM area, but it is without question sorely needed.

So VeranoHatch is done with trying to influence GM. It will be several years before we are looking again. Game over.

For all you fellows that are wondering why the diesel is not offered in vehicles like the Equinox and others, that is because GM is testing the peoples reaction and sales, I believe that if sale take off, than we will see more diesel options in other GM autos and trucks.

Per the comments above it looks like most all commentators here believe the Cruze diesel will not sell in anything but niche market volumes.

If true do not look for anymore small diesel powered ANY marque vehicles. GM is sticking its neck out and looks already to have the head cut off even before it is available for sale.

There are numerous pricing strategies. The one that should be embraced in this case is one that supports a penetration strategy. Make the profit off the Cruze sale, not off the engine.

Develop a large usage base, so that customers can get the important endorsement from word of mouth. Get people going into the dealership to ask about it to drive ordering and demonstration. Get volume out there so that the dealers know how to fix them if there’s a problem.

In othe words, do something that you don’t do well GM – get a running start and create high demand for a new product

VeranoHatch, The encore was not accesible, ya that is rediculous… I hope it is at the Chicago show… Bummer… To your point GM really only offers larger vehicles with the functions you are seeking. To bad there are not more options like a Cruze or Verano Hatch/Wagon…

VeranoHatch, I’m in the same place as you, carwise. GM turned a deaf ear to your and my wants in a new vehicle. The frustrating part is there are several vehicles they make but refuse to sell in the US. I may be a soon to be former customer. But, in a few years if they make something I like there will probably be a “conquest” rebate available. Ironic isn’t it?
