GM Postpones Chevy Silverado Launch In Argentina

On the first day of 2021, GM Authority reported on the official introduction of the Chevy Silverado in Argentina during a special exhibition in Parque Cariló – exactly the same place where a year earlier, the model was presented for the first time in the country. Although its arrival was scheduled for the first half of this year, General Motors has just postponed the launch of the Chevrolet Silverado in the Argentine market.

After suddenly removing the section dedicated to the full-size pickup on its Chevrolet website, GM Argentina confirmed to a local media that it decided to postpone once again the arrival of the Chevy Silverado in the South American country. This is the second time that the fourth-generation Silverado’s launch in the Argentine market is delayed, after being initially scheduled for the end of 2020 and pushed back due to COVID-19.

“We have decided to postpone the launch of Silverado to prioritize vehicle launches in other segments that are presenting a high demand in the Argentine market,” said GM’s local subsidiary to Autoblog Argentina. “Therefore, we could not advance a specific date for the start of its commercialization in Argentina at this time. As soon as we have news, we will let you know,” the company added.

Although the automaker did not say so explicitly, the main reason for this new delay in the launch of the Chevy Silverado in Argentina regards the restrictions on imports imposed by the country’s authorities. For several months, the Argentine federal government has significantly restricted access to foreign exchange and permits for the importation of goods and services.

This situation has been altering the launch plans of the majority of manufacturers in the country, which is the second largest automotive market in South America. As GM is having enough trouble importing units from Brazil of the highly demanded Chevrolet Onix and Chevrolet Tracker in Argentina, it decided to prioritize those models rather than try to import the Chevrolet Silverado from Mexico.

As a result, the launch of the Chevy Silverado in Argentina is once again on hold until the company is in a position to stabilize its import logistics process. As we reported earlier in the year, GM Argentina had promised an aggressive strategy to position the Silverado as the only full-size pickup in its segment with a diesel engine and an exemption from import duties.
