GM Expands Corvette Seat Belt Retractor Recall

The General has expanded the scope of a safety recall on certain Chevy Corvette units equipped with defective seat belt retractors that can become locked and render the seat belt inoperable.

Specifically, Safety Recalls N242441390, N242441391 and N242441392, which GM Authority previously reported on in June, has been expanded to include 2020 Chevy Corvette through 2025 Chevy Corvette units, rather than just 2024 and 2025 model year vehicles as previously indicated by the NHTSA. Two other recalls, N242441391 and N242441392, also apply to the issue.

The problem: affected 2020 through 2025 cars have either a driver side or passenger side seat belt retractor (or both) that can become locked in the stowed position, making it impossible to use the seat belt. Two internal components of the retractor can be out of spec and if both are, the belt may become locked after the Automatic Locking Retractor (ALR) function is activated by extending the belt.

The hazards: with the seat belt locked in the stowed position, it cannot be used to safely secure the occupant in the Vette’s seat. Being unable to use the seatbelt greatly increases the chance of injury or death in the event of a collision.

The fix: GM dealerships are instructed to replace the defective seat belt retractors in affected Chevy Corvette units with new retractors that are in spec. While this remedy was not available in June 2024 when the Safety Recall was first issued, replacement retractors are now available and the fix can be carried out.

Notably, GM has expanded the recall in part because some Vette units already repaired were “fixed” with defective replacement retractors with the same defect and problems as the original retractors.

The fix is offered free of charge to all involved Vettes.

Affected components: driver and/or passenger seat belt retractors.

Affected vehicles:

Number of affected vehicles: the original recall covered 13,464 vehicles in total. However, The General has increased the number of affected vehicles by 395 units to 13,859 units in total. The increase indicates that approximately 395 Vettes from the 2020 through 2024 model years got seat belt retractor replacements and were fitted with suspect parts.

Owners should: notification letters were already sent to owners starting on July 22nd, 2024 for the first group of affected Vettes. Additional letters for the 395 added cars will be sent on September 30th, 2024. 1. WOW! So they have identified a safety issue, but do not plan to send recall notice letters to owners until 9-30-24? Hopefully no one dies on the nearly 1 month interim period!
