2025 Chevy Express Production Start Pushed Back

The Chevy Express is not only GM’s oldest model currently in production, but also one of America’s longest-produced automotive designs of all time. Alongside its mechanical twin, the GMC Savana, it was first introduced in 1996 and got a facelift in 2003, but has been in the same generation for almost 30 years. The 2025 Chevy Express doesn’t bring any new updates, but discontinues several features like a USB port, Bluetooth connectivity, SiriusXM, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

Now, GM Authority has learned that the start of regular production (SORP) for the 2025 Chevy Express has been delayed. This highlights how all production dates are tentative until the vehicle is actually rolling off the assembly line.

As GM Authority previously covered, the 2025 Chevy Express was originally scheduled to go into production on October 7th, 2024. Now, The General has postponed the start of 2025 Express production by 10 days to October 17th, though this date is once again tentative and subject to change in the meantime. This applies to all configurations of the Express: Cargo, Passenger, and Cutaway.

GM Authority recently reported that General Motors is rolling the BrightDrop electric commercial vans into the Chevy brand. Now that Chevy has another line of commercial vans, this could be a sign that production of the Chevy Express and GMC Savana could finally be nearing an end, at least for the Cargo variants.

2025 Chevy Express

As previously mentioned, the Chevy Express is offered in multiple unique configurations, namely the Express Cargo, the Express Passenger, and the Express Cutaway, all designed to fill a specific role. Powerplant options include the naturally aspirated 4.3L V6 LV1 gasoline engine, rated at 276 horsepower and 298 pound-feet of torque, and the naturally aspirated 6.6L V8 L8T gasoline engine, rated at 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque. Notably, the previous 2.8L I4 LWN turbodiesel Duramax engine was dropped for the 2023 model year.

The 2025 Chevy Express rides on the GMT 610 platform, and it’s produced at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri. Notably, the Express Cutaway is also produced by Navistar at a separate facility in Ohio.

  1. GM just can’t get it together, why are they giving this business away?? Customers are begging for these vans. Many don’t want the new expensive walk-in vans, especially contractors who carry lots of ladders on top.

  2. I don’t understand why GM can’t get this going, there nothing new, all of the parts, tooling, and factory already exists. Everything is ready and waiting, someone needs fired.

  3. I hope GM isn’t thinking they can replace it with the new EV van that costs twice as much? That would be immediate failure and total loss of their van business.

  4. This has to be the most profitable vehicle in GM’s stable. They sell for $50,000 and all the tooling was likely paid off 25 years ago and there are very few variables to raise their manufacturing costs. They’re all white and they’re all essentially the same. They are….pure profit.

I wouldn’t be surprised though if GM dropped them hoping to push everyone into a Brightdrop Zevo. When they have something that contractors are still buying for a primo price and they’re making a fortune off of each one, such a move would be questionable but most everything GM does these days fits into that category.

  6. This needs to be in production with an AWD option as well. Contractors want this.

  7. I don’t see why they can’t update this platform. They could easily keep updating the electronics and they will be coming out with new engines in a couple years. This van is so popular in the PNW. Especially the diesel engines ones. My brother has two last I checked and it really wouldn’t be that big a deal to add AWD to the 2500 and 3500 vans.
And the low roof is super helpful fir ladders and long items like plumbing and such

Please just update this van, don’t kill it. I could drive from 15 to 350 miles a day.
Unless you could provide an EV that would do the range and have a Super Charger every 20 miles to refill.
