SAIC-GM-Wuling (SGMW), General Motors’ second joint venture in China, just announced that the all-new Wuling Starlight saw strong initial sales in the Asian country.
The automaker announced that following the official launch of the PHEV variant in China, cumulative sales of the all-new Wuling Starlight in 2023 amounted to 18,294 units, marking a strong start that quickly positioned it among the most popular models in its segment. The new Starlight reached that volume in less than a month after going on sale in the Chinese market on December 6th.
Notably, the outstanding initial sales volume of the all-new Wuling Starlight PHEV allowed the vehicle to rank second in sales among plug-in hybrid sedans in China, behind only the BYD Qin Plus that leads the segment, and is considered the hybrid benchmark in the country. This demonstrates strong buyer interest and the Starlight’s high competitiveness.
According to official SGMW statistics, during the first month of sales of the all-new Wuling Starlight PHEV in China, male customers accounted for 66 percent of people who have purchased the vehicle so far, while 70 percent of buyers are aged from 18 and 35 years old. This lines up with the Starlight’s positioning and price, the sedan becoming one of the most attractive models in its class for a younger audience.
Additionally, the joint venture revealed that more than 80 percent of Wuling Starlight PHEV buyers chose the range-topping Advanced trim level with the most connectivity features and an outstanding electric-only driving range of 150 km or 93.2 miles. In this sense, the manufacturer ensures that the Starlight meets consumer needs for products with higher configurations, higher quality and a better driving experience.
The all-new Wuling Starlight PHEV quickly gained strong demand and robust sales in China, where it arrived as the first sedan in Wuling’s history that seeks to drastically expand its presence in the passenger vehicle segment. SGMW promises to continue expanding production capacity to deliver products to users as quickly as possible, while launching the upcoming Starlight EV this year.

For around 13K US, it seems like a deal. A Leaf EV with a range of around 150 miles is 28K. This is a hybrid and has electric range of 100mi. The Chinese have learned how to build a car for not much money.
US regulations and requirements cost about $13K per car. Did you think all the govt nanny crap was free?
I don’t know, China forced tesla to do a recall on front suspension links years before the US did. And from what I can tell it is a basic design defect. Wheels can literally come off.
There’s no way this vehicle would be sold for only $26,000 in the US. More like $30,500 and only for the base model.
150 miles is really good for a plug in at that size. Probably sell well in US
Like the Cadillac CT6, several Buick sedans and others, why can’t the US get this car? I think it’s attractive and I’d absolutely test drive it to see if I liked it. Not too sure on that screen and dash, but in that department I think we are getting down to the lesser of two evils.
Please PLEASE GM, introduce the Malibu EV assembled in the US for the USA. PS. Can you include a Buick version with an upgraded interior? Thank you.
I get that some people here don’t like this style and that’s OK. Me personally, I love it. Major props to the designer. It’s a shame GM is not selling PHEVs here. It would work.
I agree 100%. GM is missing the boat with their EV-only strategy, and not producing any hybrids. I will not purchase an EV until the range doubles and the cost is in line with ICE. Probably not until solid-state batteries are mainstream, which is still several years away. I recently bought a Lincoln Corsair PHEV, but would have preferred buying a GM vehicle with my employee discount. GM doesn’t offer any all-wheel drive SUVs that can tow at least 2500 pounds and get over 30 mpg that competes with the Corsair PHEV. My AWD Corsair can tow 3000 pounds and is rated for 34 mpg city and 32 mpg highway, with 28 miles of all electric range.
Buick showrooms need this sedan!
